Book Synopsis The Naked Communist:Cold War Modernism and the Politics of Popular Culture by : Roland Vegso
Download or read book The Naked Communist:Cold War Modernism and the Politics of Popular Culture written by Roland Vegso and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naked Communist argues that the political ideologies of modernity were fundamentally determined by four basic figures: the world, the enemy, the secret, and the catastrophe. While the "world" names the totality that functioned as the ultimate horizon of modern political imagination, the three other figures define the necessary limits of this totality by reflecting on the limits of representation. The book highlights the enduring presence of these figures in the modern imagination through detailed analysis of a concrete historical example: American anti-Communist politics of the 1950s. Its primary objective is to describe the internal mechanisms of what we could call an anti-Communist "aesthetic ideology." The book thus traces the way anti-Communist popular culture emerged in the discourse of Cold War liberalism as a political symptom of modernism. Based on a discursive analysis of American anti-Communist politics, the book presents parallel readings of modernism and popular fiction from the 1950s (nuclear holocaust novels, spy novels, and popular political novels) in order to show that, despite the radical separation of the two cultural fields, they both participated in a common ideological program.

Book Synopsis Enemies to Allies by : Brian C. Etheridge
Download or read book Enemies to Allies written by Brian C. Etheridge and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Addresses a compelling and fascinating feature of the Cold War Era, namely the rapid reversal of America’s alliance relationships after World War II.” —Thomas A. Schwartz, coeditor of The Strained Alliance At the close of World War II, the United States went from being allied with the Soviet Union against Germany to alignment with the Germans against the Soviet Union—almost overnight. While many Americans came to perceive the German people as democrats standing firm with their Western allies on the front lines of the Cold War, others were wary of a renewed Third Reich and viewed all Germans as nascent Nazis bent on world domination. These adversarial perspectives added measurably to the atmosphere of fear and distrust that defined the Cold War. In Enemies to Allies, Brian C. Etheridge examines more than one hundred years of American interpretations and representations of Germany. With a particular focus on the postwar period, he demonstrates how a wide array of actors—including special interest groups and US and West German policymakers—employed powerful narratives to influence public opinion and achieve their foreign policy objectives. Etheridge also analyses bestselling books, popular television shows such as Hogan’s Heroes, and award-winning movies such as Schindler’s List to reveal how narratives about the Third Reich and Cold War Germany were manufactured, contested, and co-opted as rival viewpoints competed for legitimacy. This groundbreaking study draws from theories of public memory and public diplomacy to demonstrate how conflicting US accounts of German history serve as a window for understanding not only American identity, but international relations and state power. “A masterful combination of diplomatic and cultural history.” —Stewart Anderson, Brigham Young University

Book Synopsis Communism in the Bible by : Jose Porfirio Miranda
Download or read book Communism in the Bible written by Jose Porfirio Miranda and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-19 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miranda will not be pigeonholed by the academy. It is to be strongly hoped that he is taken seriously, for there is in his writing the kind of discernment which may reform and renew Scripture study. Walter Brueggemann, Professor of Old Testament, Eden Theological Seminary This book, like the liberation theologies generally (Latin American, Black, feminist), challenges traditional 'intentional misunderstandings' of the Scripture by established powers. It allows familiar biblical passages, such as the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, to speak out with their original force and clarity--and the message sounds astonishingly new! An excellent translation by Robert Barr. Madeleine Boucher, Associate Professor of New Testament, Fordham University Jose Miranda's book is an extremely valuable statement, which advances the discussion of biblical economics to a new stage. Miranda minces no words in exposing the exegetical sleight-of-hand attempted by 'conscience-tranquillizing theologians.' His passionate and informed defense of 'Christian communism' will have to be reckoned with by all who have professed a willingness to be obedient to the Gospel. Richard J. Mouw, Professor of Philosophy, Calvin College A scholarly study in biblical teaching--brief, direct, powerful--which puts the burden of proof on those who would deny that original and authentic Christianity is communistic (not, to say, Marxist). This is vintage Miranda--erudite, passionate, persuasive, and above all, disturbing. Robert T. Osborn, Chairman, Department of Religion, Duke University

Book Synopsis The Age of Eisenhower by : William I Hitchcock
Download or read book The Age of Eisenhower written by William I Hitchcock and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller, this is the “outstanding” (The Atlantic), insightful, and authoritative account of Dwight Eisenhower’s presidency. Drawing on newly declassified documents and thousands of pages of unpublished material, The Age of Eisenhower tells the story of a masterful president guiding the nation through the great crises of the 1950s, from McCarthyism and the Korean War through civil rights turmoil and Cold War conflicts. This is a portrait of a skilled leader who, despite his conservative inclinations, found a middle path through the bitter partisanship of his era. At home, Eisenhower affirmed the central elements of the New Deal, such as Social Security; fought the demagoguery of Senator Joseph McCarthy; and advanced the agenda of civil rights for African-Americans. Abroad, he ended the Korean War and avoided a new quagmire in Vietnam. Yet he also charted a significant expansion of America’s missile technology and deployed a vast array of covert operations around the world to confront the challenge of communism. As he left office, he cautioned Americans to remain alert to the dangers of a powerful military-industrial complex that could threaten their liberties. Today, presidential historians rank Eisenhower fifth on the list of great presidents, and William Hitchcock’s “rich narrative” (The Wall Street Journal) shows us why Ike’s stock has risen so high. He was a gifted leader, a decent man of humble origins who used his powers to advance the welfare of all Americans. Now more than ever, with this “complete and persuasive assessment” (Booklist, starred review), Americans have much to learn from Dwight Eisenhower.
Download or read book Animation written by Chris Pallant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Animation: Critical and Primary Sources is a major multi-volume work of reference that brings together seminal writings on animation studies. Gathering historical and contemporary texts from a wide-ranging number of sources, the volumes provide a key resource in understanding and studying the past and future directions of animation studies. The four volumes thematically trace animation studies from its many definitions, or a lack thereof, to the institutional nature of animation production, to establishing greater space within animation discourse for the consideration of broadcast and interactive animation, and finally, giving greater contextual understanding of the field of animation studies, by focusing on 'Authorship', 'Genre', 'Identity Politics', and 'Spectatorship', thus enabling readers to engage more deeply with the ideas discussed in the final volume. Ordering the collection in this way avoids imposing an overly simplistic chronological framework, thereby allowing debates that have developed over years (and even decades) to stand side by side. Each volume is separately introduced and the essays structured into coherent sections on specific themes"--
Book Synopsis Colonialism, Neo-Colonialism, and Anti-Terrorism Law in the Arab World by : Fatemah Alzubairi
Download or read book Colonialism, Neo-Colonialism, and Anti-Terrorism Law in the Arab World written by Fatemah Alzubairi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of personal harm and destruction from terrorist attacks is nowhere near as great as in Arab nations. However, are counter-terrorism laws in the Arab world formulated and enforced to protect or oppress? Colonialism, Neo-Colonialism, and Anti-Terrorism Law in the Arab World examines the relationship between Western influence and counter-terrorism law, focusing on the Arab world, which is, on the one hand, a hostile producer of terrorist organizations, and on the other, a leader in countering 'terrorism'. With case studies of Egypt and Tunisia, Alzubairi traces the colonial roots of the use of coercion and extra-legal measures to protect the ruling order, which are now justified in both the West and the Arab world in the name of counter-terrorism. Colonialism, Neo-Colonialism, and Anti-Terrorism Law in the Arab World provides important lessons for counter-terrorism, not just in these countries but also elsewhere in the world.
