Book excerpt: Excerpt from Communism and Socialism in Their History and Theory: A Sketch The greater part of the work which is now offered to the public, first appeared a few months since, under the form of weekly articles, in the New York Independent. It is now republished with some additions, which are chiefly appendixes, giving the views of others on certain special points. The object of the work will be sufficiently evident on slight examination. From very early times there has been felt, under several forms of civilization and religion, a dissatisfaction with the existing institutions of society, which has given birth to the desire of forming communities within the state and protected by it, yet separated from the rest of the people. Ideals, also, of reformed political societies have been given to the world, which grew out of this same dissatisfaction with the actual order of things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Communism and Socialism in Their History and Theory: A Sketch The class of persons for whom we have written, are those who would relish neither extensive details touching the communities of the past, which have left no mark on society, nor a long exposition of the economical principles of modern socialism. Should this system gain such favor as seriously to threaten the present order of things, we earnestly hope that other essays, more elaborate and comprehensive than the present one, will be written for its confutation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Busky explores the history of European communist parties and governments, the neo-Marxist philosophers, and why Marxism ultimately fails to explain history. He presents a pluralist alternative to Marxism, the democratic philosophy of history, and goes farther than many in applying developmental psychology for an understanding of human history. Busky begins with a thorough exploration of the history of Eastern and Western European Marxist-Leninist parties and governments from their beginnings to the present. He also explores the largely European neo-Marxist philosophers and their theories. Then he demonstrates why Marxism ultimately fails as a theroy to explain history due to its monist emphasis on economic determinism. The volume presents an alternative, pluralist conception of history, and he goes further than most analysts in using insights from the field of developmental psychology to explain, by analogy, human political-economic change. A thorough synthesis that will be of interest to scholars, students, and the general reading public interested in Marxism and modern European history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Socialism in its conceptual origins is an Anglo-French creation, but its classical formulation was achieved by Marx in Germany. This three-fold movement, involving the principle countries of western Europe, is the theme to which George Lichtheim turns his attention in his new history of early socialism. Beginning with the utopians and egalitarians of revolutionary France, and dealing in turn with the major figures of French socialist and communist thought--Fourier, Proudhon, Saint-Simon, and many minor ones, with the economists and theorists who shaped the socialist movement in England before 1848, and finally, with Germany's "pre-Marxist" thinkers and with Marx himself, the author offers a pioneering analysis of the interrelation between socialist theory and the historical circumstances in which it arose and flourished. Socialism was not, of course, a homogeneous movement, and it is the particular merit of Mr. Lichtheim's discerning and eloquent presentation that it preserves all the richness and complexity of the political history of those tumultuous decades before 1848. In particular, the author throws new light on the distinctive meanings--then and later--of the terms "socialism" and "communism." Mr. Lichtheim offers an analysis of the major theoretical formulation of socialism, but at the same time he sets them in larger philosophical and historical contexts in which they belong. This is intellectual history of the highest order, and a major contribution to the study of European political philosophy." -- Publisher's description

Book excerpt: Celebrating Karl Marx’s 200th Birth Anniversary The Communist Manifesto has been recognized as one of the world’s most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League’s purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism’s potential future forms. The book contains Marx and Engels’ theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism. Born in Westphalia in 1820, Friedrich Engels was the son of a textile manufacturer. After military training in Berlin and already a convert to communism, Engels went to Manchester in 1842 to represent the family firm. A relationship with a mill-hand, Mary Bums, and friendship with local Owenites and Chartists helped to inspire his famous early work, The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. Karl Marx was born in 1818 in Trier, Germany and studied in Bonn and Berlin. Influenced by Hegel, he later reacted against idealist philosophy and began to develop his own theory of historical materialism. He related the state of society to its economic foundations and mode of production, and recommended armed revolution on the part of the proletariat.
