Book excerpt: Design and Operation of Production Networks for Mass Personalization in the Era of Cloud Technology draws on the latest industry advances to provide everything needed for the effective implementation of this powerful tool. Shorter product lifecycles have increased pressure on manufacturers through the increasing variety and complexity of production, challenging their workforce to remain competitive and profitable. This has led to innovation in production network methodologies, which together with opportunities provided by new digital technologies has fed a rapid evolution of production engineering that has opened new solutions to the challenges of mass personalization and market uncertainty. In addition to the latest developments in cloud technology, reference is made to key enabling technologies, including artificial intelligence, the digital twin, big data analytics, and the internet of things (IoT) to help users integrate the cloud approach with a fully digitalized production system. Presents diverse cases that show how cloud-based technologies can be used in different ways as part of the standard operation of global production networks Provides detailed reviews of new technologies like the digital twin, big data analytics, and blockchain to provide context on the role of cloud technologies in a fully digitalized system Explores future trends for cloud technology and production engineering

Given the strategic importance of computers in the economies of the industrial world, it is fitting that one of the most significant commercial stories of our time is the standardization of computer communications. Quite frankly, when we joined with other computer users to launch this effort we didn't predict its scope and we should have done. public visibility. In restrospect, I guess The computer assisted technologies looming on the horizon offer some of the greatest functional and productivity tools available to improve business operations. However, the absence of a standardized electronic link permeating most business organizations poses a severe impediment to the efficient deployment of this technology. The feasibility of using computer controlled devices to design, test, and manufacture products - as part of a massive network - is well within our technological grasp. However, unless the world agrees upon a global set of standards that will make multi-vendor computer systems interoperable, successful implementation of these technologies becomes less and less attractive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of a congress concerning Open Communications, the basis for cost effective Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), are presented. The congress was sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities, DG XIII (Telecommunications, Information Industries and Innovation), at Stuttgart's Annual Machine Tool Fair, 4-7 September 1990. The book provides an overview of international initiatives on implementing open communications in manufacturing/engineering environments, including available communication products on the market. Topics covered encompass industrial needs for open systems for manufacturing, pilot implementations in the USA, Japan and Europe, and introduction to MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification) and NMT (Network Management). Technological solutions that enable the implementation of real multi-vendor environments and allow the full integration from design to manufacture or from order to distribution are also explained. Furthermore, the book highlights the work done in the ESPRIT flagship project, "Communication Network for Manufacturing Applications". During the project's lifetime several experimental and industrial pilot sites were commissioned and these are explained in detail. The book is unique in that it describes both the business strategy and the technological approach. It is aimed at decision makers and people that need to have an up-to-date technical understanding and awareness of future trends in manufacturing systems. Production Engineers, Systems Engineers, Technical Managers, Business Managers, EDP Staff, and Academics will find it useful.

Book excerpt: Today's manufacturing environment is characterised by significant change in the way it is able to respond to its business objectives. Companies now face new challenges to meet customer demands including greater flexibility, a wider range of products, higher quality, improved lead time, whilst maintaining _c.ompetitive prices. The changes manifest in each company will differ but, the trend is towards providing a leaner, more responsive organisation. This is reflected in the need for Information Technology (IT) systems to be more integrated across an enterprise and for the systems to be provided on a distributed basis. At the same time it is imperative that the costs associated with these IT systems and the range of skills required by an enterprise to develop and support such systems should be minimal. One way of achieving this objective is to adopt the use of standards. During recent years there has been a lot of activity to standardise the way that manufacturing devices communicate with each other. Considerable progress has been made, thanks not least to the success of the international effort of stand ardisation bodies like ISO, IEEE and IEC, and projects applying standardised protocols like Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP), in the USA, Commun ications Network for Manufacturing Applications (CNMA) in Europe and not forgetting Mini-MAP and Fieldbus technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid proliferation of information and communications technology, industrial automation has undergone a sweeping transformation toward intelligent manufacturing. Wireless communication is widely considered to be one of the key technologies enabling intelligent manufacturing. On one hand, deterministic communication with high reliability and low latency is typically required in industrial automation applications. On the other hand, wireless communication in industrial settings is hindered by strictly limited communication resources and many other factors which mainly derive from the shared and error-prone nature of the wireless channels used. The limited communication resources and harsh channel conditions pose considerable challenges for reliable, real-time data transmission in industrial wireless networks. Resource optimization methods are vital to ensuring the deterministic performance of industrial wireless networks. Traditional resource optimization methods adopt the isolated resource optimization methods for each protocol layer, which is inherently local-optimal and leads performance uncontrollable. To focus on “Performance Controllable Industrial Wireless Networks”, this book presents thejoint resource optimization methods across multiple protocol layers for industrial wireless networks; reviews recent, major advances; and discusses the practical implementations of the proposed methods. The joint resource optimization methods discussed here will greatly benefit scientists and researchers in the areas of industrial automation and Industrial Internet of Things. To gain the most from this book, readers should have a fundamental grasp of wireless communication, scheduling theory, and convex optimization.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications DISCRETE EVENT SYSTEMS, MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS AND COMMUNICATION NETWORKS is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1992-93 IMA program on "Control Theory. " The study of discrete event dynamical systems (DEDS) has become rapidly popular among researchers in systems and control, in communication networks, in manufacturing, and in distributed computing. This development has created problems for re searchers and potential "consumers" of the research. The first problem is the veritable Babel of languages, formalisms, and approaches, which makes it very difficult to determine the commonalities and distinctions among the competing schools of approaches. The second, related, problem arises from the different traditions, paradigms, values, and experience that scholars bring to their study of DEDS, depending on whether they come from control, com munication, computer science, or mathematical logic. As a result, intellectual exchange among scholars becomes compromised by unexplicated assumptions. The purpose of the Workshop was to promote exchange among scholars representing some of the major "schools" of thought in DEDS with the hope that (1) greater clarity will be achieved thereby, and (2) cross-fertilization will lead to more fruitful questions. We thank P. R. Kumar and P. P. Varaiya for organizing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office, whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr.
