Book excerpt: High-speed management is used to competitive advantage by some of the most successful organizations in the world - General Electric; Toyota; ASEA, Brown, and Boveri; Motorola; Intel; and Matsushita. In these very successful companies fast cycle time or high-speed management translates into two important organizational capabilities. First, it creates a high level of performance that management can build into a firm's operating systems. More specifically, increases in effective communication are employed to eliminate bottlenecks, delays, and errors in production, cutting costs and improving quality. Second, high-speed management is an organizational strategy which continuously improves a firm's integration, coordination, and control systems. It transforms all of a firm's communication activities such as leadership, corporate climate, teamwork, worker and unit interfaces, process mapping, and outside linking processes into a more responsive customer adaptation system.

Book excerpt: High-Speed Management and Organizational Communication in the 1990s provides a unique, systematic, and practical treatment of the role communication plays in the new organizations. It treats organizational integration, coordination, and control as central communication processes and explores their transformation of traditional organizational topics such as leadership, corporate culture, teamwork, and continuous improvement programs. The central thesis of this analysis is that increasing the speed with which products get to market helps to make an organization more productive, develop better quality products, become more responsive to customer needs, and generate more profits for investors. Why and how this takes place as well as the central role communication plays in the process is treated here in detail.

This series emerged from a need to provide a forum for the people who are actively involved in Research and Development in the Research Triangle area in which they could present and discuss new ideas in Computer Communications. TriComm '92 was dedicated to High Speed networks. In particular, the program was developed around the following themes: local ATM, preventive and reactive congestion control. routing. transport protocols. traffic measurements, software engineering for telecommunication systems. and standards. I would like to thank all the speakers who agreed to present a paper. and the members of the program committee who patiently refereed the papers despite their busy schedules. I would also like to thank Mr. Ed Bowen, IBM, Research Triangle Park, for covering the expenses for the preparation of the pre-conference proceedings. and Dr. Raif Onvural. IBM, Research Triangle Park, for overseeing the photocopying of the proceedings. I would also like to thank my "Guardian Angel" Ms. Margaret Hudacko. Center for Communications and Signal Processing. State University, who made all the local arrangements. North Carolina Without her help, this conference would have been a complete disaster. Many thanks also go to Norene Miller. Working Group 6. 2 sponsors the Broadband Communications series of conferences (Paris 1995, Montreal 1996, Lisboa 1997, Stuttgart 1998, and Hong-Kong 1999). Working Group 6. 3 sponsors the Performance of Communication Systems series of conferences (Paris 1981, Zürich 1984, Rio de Janeiro 1987, Barcelona 1990, Raleigh 1993, Istanbul 1995, and Lund 1998). Working Group 6. 4 sponsors the High Performance Networking series of conferences (Aaren 1987, Liège 1988, Berlin 1990, Liège 1992, Grenoble 1994, Palma 1995, New York 1997, Vienna 1998). It is expected that this new joint conference will take place every two years. In view of the three sponsoring Working Groups, there were three separate tracks, one per Working Group. Each track was handled by a different co chairman. Specifically, the track of Working Group 6. 2 was handled by Ulf Körner, the track of Working Group 6. 3 was handled by Ioanis Stavrakakis, and the track of Working Group 6. 4 was handled by Serge Fdida. The overall program committee chairman was Harry Perros, and the general conference chairman was Guy Pujolle. A total of 209 papers were submitted to the conference of which 82 were accepted. Each paper was submitted to one of the three tracks.
