Book excerpt: Deep insight and candid discussion from one of Wall Street's best investors Common Stocks and Common Sense provides detailed insight into common stock investing, using a case-study approach based on real-world investments. Author Edgar Wachenheim is the 28-year CEO of Greenhaven Associates, boasting an average annual portfolio comparable to Warren Buffet's. In this book, he shares his knowledge and experiences by providing detailed analyses of actual investments made by himself and other investors. The discussion covers the entire investment process, including the softer, human side, with candid insight into the joys and frustrations, intensities and pressures, and risks and uncertainties. The unique emphasis on behavioral economics and real-world cases set this book apart from the herd—but it's Wachenheim himself and his deeply-examined perspective that elevates the book beyond a mere investing guide. Between 1990 and 2014, a typical portfolio managed by Wachenheim enjoyed an average annual return in excess of 18%, achieved using relatively conservative stocks and no financial leverage. As a proponent of evidence and example, his analysis of real cases serve as a valuable education for anyone looking to improve their own investment practices. Understand investment through the lens of a Wall Street leader Dig into the details of real-world common stock investing Learn how to invest creatively and minimize risk Go beyond theory to study strategy on a case-by-case basis Investment principles and strategies are easy to find—entire libraries have been written about theories and methods and what 'should' happen. But this book goes beyond the typical guide to show you how these ideas are applied in the real world—and what actually happened. Investors seeking real insight, real expertise, and a proven track record will find Common Stocks and Common Sense a uniquely useful resource.

Book excerpt: As an investor, the stock market offers you the opportunity to increase your income without taking on the high risks that are usually associated when venturing in other businesses. By selling stocks, the company raises capital and is able to expand itself exponentially. Therefore, as an investor, when you purchase shares of a company, you have increased the worth of the company. Thus it's a win-win situation for both investor and owner. The negative risk associated with the stock market can be small or large, but it all depends on the number of shares of stock that you, as an investor, have bought. Therefore, if a company's stock shares lose value, the stocks you have bought also loses value, and if you decide to sell your stocks when the value is low, you will have incurred a loss. I will show you how you can minimize your risks and show you different ways in which investors are not only making money, but are also building with the stock market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a stock market environment dominated by professional investors, A Few Good Eggs in One Basket o?ers a plain-talk approach to pro?tability by selecting and managing an investment portfolio of common stocks for an individual. Author Richard L. Gunderson, who has been an investor for more than forty years, outlines an enduring framework that improves the odds for the individual investor to exceed the performance of the market over the long term by buying good companies at bargain prices. He outlines what constitutes a good company and how to determine when a price meets the test of being a bargain. A Few Good Eggs in One Basket also helps individual investors by discussing what to look for; where to look; when to buy; when to sell; and how many stocks to own. A Few Good Eggs in One Basket presents a prescription designed to take advantage of opportunities created by market overreaction to bad news and disappointing results. Gunderson believes there are always bargains at any time and in any market. The challenge is to consistently apply a disciplined approach to identifying the unusual and favorable opportunities and concentrating a portfolio on those stocks representing the best combination of overall quality and intrinsic value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty-three years I have been a persistent student of the security markets. As a member of several Stock Exchange firms, as a bond dealer, trader and investor, I have come into active contact with many thousands of those who are executing orders and handling markets, as well as those who deal in such markets, namely traders and investors. For the past fifteen years I have edited and published The Magazine of Wall Street, which at this writing has the largest circulation of any financial publication in the world. These experiences have given me an opportunity to study not only the stock and bond markets, but all those related thereto, and have enabled me to observe the forces which influence these markets and the human elements which contribute so largely to their activity and wide fluctuations. Out of this experience I have evolved or adopted or formulated certain methods of trading and investing, and some of these I have collected and presented in the pages which follow. My purpose in preparing this book has been two-fold. Primarily, I have in mind the thousands of new investors who find the securities market a vast, technical machine, too complex to be understood by many. It has been my effort to do away with this impression—to emphasize the fact that, in Wall Street as anywhere else, the chief essential is common sense, coupled with study and practical experience. I have attempted to outline the requirements for success in this field in a way that will be understandable to all. This classic includes the following chapters: I. First Lessons II. Profitable Experiences III. Why I Buy Certain Stocks and Bonds IV. Unearthing Profit Opportunities V. Some Experiences in Mining Stocks VI. The Fundamentals of Successful Investing VII. The Story of a Little Odd Lot VIII. Rules I Follow in Trading and Investing IX. Forecasting Future Developments X. Truth About “Averaging Down” XI. Conclusions as to Foresight and Judgment XII. Safeguarding Your Capital XIII. How Millions Are Lost in Wall Street XIV. Importance of Knowing Who Owns a Stock

Book excerpt: The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made recounts the history of America's first stock exchange and the ways it shaped the growth and decline of the city around it. Founded in 1790, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, its member firms, and the companies they financed had profound impacts on the city's place in the world economy. At its start, the exchange and its members helped spur the development of the early United States, its financial sector, and its westward expansion. During the nineteenth century, they invested in making Philadelphia the center of industrial America, raising capital for the railroads and coal mines that connected cities to one another and built a fossil fuel-based economy. After financing the Civil War, they underwrote the growth of the modern metropolis, its transportation infrastructure, utility systems, and real estate development. At the turn of the twentieth century, stagnation of the exchange contributed to Philadelphia's loss of power in the national and world economy. This original interpretation of the roots of deindustrialization holds important lessons for other cities that have declined. The exchange's revival following World War II is a remarkable story, but it also illustrates the limits of economic development in postindustrial cities. Unlike earlier eras, the exchange's fortunes diverged from those of the city around it. Ultimately, it became part of a larger, global institution when it merged with NASDAQ in 2008. Far more than a history of a single institution, The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made traces the evolving relationship between the exchange and the city. For people concerned with cities and their development, this study offers a long-term history of the public-private partnerships and private sector-led urban development popular today. More generally, it traces the networks of firms and institutions revealed by the securities market and its participants. Herein lies a critical and understudied part of the history of metropolitan economic development.

It means big commissions and fees for them and, nearly always, below average investment returns for you. Here is advice from financial economists without the ulterior motive of big commissions: 'Stop throwing away money on unnecessary services and start safely collecting profitable returns'.
