Book Synopsis The Cultivation of Man, According to the Teachings of Common-Sense Being a Treatise on the Application to Man of the Laws That He Applies to All Other Creatures (Classic Reprint) by : Charles A. Witchell
Download or read book The Cultivation of Man, According to the Teachings of Common-Sense Being a Treatise on the Application to Man of the Laws That He Applies to All Other Creatures (Classic Reprint) written by Charles A. Witchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation of Man, According to the Teachings of Common-Sense Being a Treatise on the Application to Man of the Laws That He Applies to All Other Creatures When a person ventures to express Opinions contrary to current notions, he is generally subjected to persecution; and if, owing to his mode of earning a livelihood, he be especially vulnerable in this respect, he may expect some what painful experiences, both for himself and for those dependent on him. But if he feel convinced that he is contending for what is true and good, he will bear all with fortitude, knowing, though life itself be threatened, that he has tried to help man to gain a greater knowledge of Nature's truths. And his children, when they shall have arrived at years of discretion, will rejoice that their father was bold to speak, and patient to suffer, for the eternal cause of right. And they, like him, may be strong to endure in silence. This book is contrary to some current notions - contrary to the Opinions of many whose goodwill I dearly value. It suggests that the cultivation of the human race, like that of any other species, should proceed on natural lines; that the stock from which the future members of the community are to be born should be carefully selected; that the strong should not be childless; and that defective children should be eliminated very early in life. But the argument is claimed to be founded on natural facts; and, if so, it may well be a sound one - in which case many of our currently accepted notions must be wrong. Download or read book Common Sense written by Sophia Rosenfeld and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common sense has always been a cornerstone of American politics. In 1776, Tom Paine’s vital pamphlet with that title sparked the American Revolution. And today, common sense—the wisdom of ordinary people, knowledge so self-evident that it is beyond debate—remains a powerful political ideal, utilized alike by George W. Bush’s aw-shucks articulations and Barack Obama’s down-to-earth reasonableness. But far from self-evident is where our faith in common sense comes from and how its populist logic has shaped modern democracy. Common Sense: A Political History is the first book to explore this essential political phenomenon. The story begins in the aftermath of England’s Glorious Revolution, when common sense first became a political ideal worth struggling over. Sophia Rosenfeld’s accessible and insightful account then wends its way across two continents and multiple centuries, revealing the remarkable individuals who appropriated the old, seemingly universal idea of common sense and the new strategic uses they made of it. Paine may have boasted that common sense is always on the side of the people and opposed to the rule of kings, but Rosenfeld demonstrates that common sense has been used to foster demagoguery and exclusivity as well as popular sovereignty. She provides a new account of the transatlantic Enlightenment and the Age of Revolutions, and offers a fresh reading on what the eighteenth century bequeathed to the political ferment of our own time. Far from commonsensical, the history of common sense turns out to be rife with paradox and surprise.

Book Synopsis In Search of Our Humanity by : Valerii Aleksandrovich Kuvakin
Download or read book In Search of Our Humanity written by Valerii Aleksandrovich Kuvakin and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian philosopher Valery A. Kuvakin reviews the major principles of humanism as the starting point for an overall definition of humanity. Humanism, as definied by Kuvakin, is based on the scientific method, seeks objective knowledge, is anthropocentric, uses reason as its guiding principle, and extolls common sense based on scientifically verifiable knowledge without any restriction from tradition, customs, political systems, or religion. Arrayed against these humanist values are the "pseudovalues" of the paranormal and irrational faith, and the "antivalues" of greed, corruption, addiction, violence, and environmental destruction. Avoiding both the heaven of our fantasies and the hell of our own making, humanism offers the 21st century the basis for establishing a just, free, and sane society.
