Book Synopsis Providential Democracy by : Dominique Schnapper
Download or read book Providential Democracy written by Dominique Schnapper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy posits the universality of the equality principle: a community of citizens is governed by the principle of the formal equality of all individuals, whatever their real social, cultural, or other inequalities. Democratization, on the other hand, is motivated by the ambition of ensuring the real equality of citizens, and not simply their formal equality. The dynamics of democracy are thus insured by the development of a welfare state that increasingly intervenes in order to satisfy the social and economic needs of individuals. Especially focused on France, yet informed by the experiences of other European countries, this book examines the dilemmas of the search for equality in society and politics.Democratization guarantees the rights of salaried workers and employees, the rights to material survival and housing, as well as health care, education, and culture. Today, however, as Schnapper observes, its action has become paradoxical. As the fruit of a praiseworthy concern to ensure the universality of rights, what Schnapper identifies as a "Providence State" now aims, by means of positive discrimination and other specific promotion policies, to defend the particular rights of certain categories of individuals. The action of the Providence State thus nourishes an aspiration: that the identities of historical collectivities gathered within the same national society be publicly recognized, and that these have rights. Equity thus supplants equality; and multiculturalism, universality. Such is the ordeal currently experienced by Western democracies, which are faced with the increasingly "providential" nature of their societies. Indeed, the author asks, how can a united political Europe be constructed on the ideals and institutions of citizenship, when European nations are becoming providential democracies?Providential Democracy offers a searching and timely critique of democratization that will be of interest to sociologists, political sci

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, this book traces how governments in France, Germany, Britain, Denmark and Ireland became involved in replacing industrial revolution urban slums with mass high-rise, high-density concrete estates. As the book considers each country’s housing history and traditions, and analyses the contrasting structures and systems, it finds convergence of problems in the growing tensions of their most disadvantaged communities. The book underlines the continuing drift towards deeper polarization, an issue which has become ever more important in the multi-lingual, ethnically diverse urban societies of the 21st Century. The book’s detailed coverage of the historical, political and social changes relating to housing within the various countries make it an important text for students and practitioners concerned with housing, urban affairs, social policy and administration.

Download or read book Authentic Co-production of Public Space written by Paola Michialino and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tests the potential of a facilitated action-research approach in participative urban design projects to act as catalysts in countering social violence in distressed quarters of France. It evaluates the FAR programme (Formation Action Recherche pour la coproduction et gestion des espaces publics) in the region Nord – Pas de Calais as a local strategy for achieving the national objectives of social reform – as envisioned by President Mitterand and encapsulated in the national Politique de la Ville. Significantly, this study identifies the critical importance of positive political will at all levels in achieving the goals of the Politique de la Ville, and it provides a possible explanation for the failure of previous attempts to engage residents effectively. It also indicates possible future strategies for planning participative projects where they are intended to promote integrated social, urban and economic development.
