The several sections dealing with opportunities, requirements, salaries, etc., in the various voca tions listed in this bulletin have in most instances been submitted for com ments and suggestions to experts in their respective fields and the complete bulletin carries their endorsement. It is hoped that, the pamphlet will prove especially helpful to young women in the colleges who are looking for help and guidance in formulating plans for their future work. The only guarantee of the advancement of women beyond routine tasks and subordinate positions is the long plan including as its most important elements a thorough preparation for the work and a professional attitude toward it. Inadequate training and a medal attitude toward it on the part of many women workers account for most of the 10mg lamented closed doors. Incidence of training by schooling, There is a strong positive correlation between schooling and company provided training. Approximately 15 percent of all college graduates in 1988 participated in company provided training programs that year. Only 5 percent of males and 7 percent of females who were a high school graduate or dropout participated in formal ou-the-job training. The relationship between schooling and off-the-job training is a bit different, especially for females. Female high school dropouts are much more likely to receive off-the-job training than female college graduates (10 percent vs. 9 percent). However, for males, the more schooling, the more likely an individual is to have participated in some off-the-job training. Incidence of training by union status, A higher percentage of union workers than nonunion workers are likely to receive on-the-job training, especially for women union members. However, this pattern reverses itself for off-the-job training with non union workers more likely to participate in off-the-job training programs than union workers. This differential pattern may be the result of union contracts containing specific policies on worker training while non union workers interested in acquiring additional skills must seek training outside the firm. We have made marvelous educational growth in Missouri in recent years, yet our country schools, as a class, do not measure up to the needs of today. If we are to keep the world safe for Democracy it must be through the medium of an intelligent citizenship in America. During the past school year, the average Missouri child was in school less than five months. The report of the survey made during the past year shows a condition which we, as Missourians, ought to realize and which we ought not to allow to exist in this State. The teaching of the public schools must be revised so that the right kind of training shall be given in both city and country. The child must be educated so that he can work with his hands as well as with his head. His heart must be trained and his health preserved. At the request of Governor F.D. Gardner, the State Superintendent of Public Schools, in co-operation with the Missouri State Teachers Association and other educational agencies, made a survey of the one-room country schools of this State.
