Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance for Girls Fortunate are we to have from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a book on the vocational guidance of girls. Mrs. Dickson has the all-round life experiences which give her the kind of training needed for a broad and sympathetic approach to the delicate, intricate, and complex problems of woman's life in the swiftly changing social and industrial world. Mrs. Dickson was a teacher for seven years in the grades in the city of New York. She then became the partner of a superintendent of schools in the business of making a home. In these early homemaking years there came from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a series of historical books for the grades which have placed her among the leading educational writers of the country. During the long sickness of her husband she filled for a while two administrative positions - homemaker and superintendent of schools. Her three children are now in high school and are beginning to plan for their own life work. With the broad training of homemaker, wife, mother, teacher, writer, and administrator, Mrs. Dickson has the combination of experiences to enable her to introduce teachers and mothers to the very difficult problems of planning wisely big life careers for our girls. The book is so plainly and guardedly written that it can also be used as a textbook for the girls themselves in connection with civic and vocational courses. The only difficulty with the book for a text is that it is so attractively written on such vital problems that the student will not stop reading at the end of the lesson. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior Training for Modern Business In a democracy Where the ability to earn a living is essen tial to good citizenship, the schools should give instruction in pre-employment subjects as part of their training for citizen ship. The most popular Of these pre-employment courses pre pare for clerical positions in offices and stores, or for commercial occupations as they are commonly called. The senior commer cial courses in shorthand, advanced bookkeeping, salesman ship, and commercial law, however, are poorly adapted to continuation school pupils, junior high school pupils, first year pupils in the senior high school, the junior pupils in the private school of business or in the evening high school. Harm comes by giving these boys and girls in the early adolescent period business training courses Which are designed for senior high school grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocations for Business and Professional Women Marked changes and rapid developments occurred in certain types of work for women while this country was engaged in the war. No one is able to estimate the extent to which these developments might have progressed if the war had continued, or the extent to which they would prove permanent. It is an established fact, however, that women were successful in most of the types of work into which they were called by the exigencies of the war. No mention is made in this pamphlet of the types of positions held by women during the war in which the need for them or the opportunities for them were of a purely temporary nature. The attempt is made to discuss those occupa tions in which women have made a definite and permanent place for them selves and in which younger women, the workers of the future, may expect to find fields for service. The teaching profession has been omitted for the reason that most requests for vocational information are directed toward the non-academic vocations and neither the Intercollegiate Bureau of Occupations nor so far the Bureau of Vocational Information has conducted investigations into the opportunities in 'the many subdivisions of the teaching profession. The several sections dealing with opportunities, requirements, salaries, etc., in the various voca tions listed in this bulletin have in most instances been submitted for com ments and suggestions to experts in their respective fields and the complete bulletin carries their endorsement. It is hoped that, the pamphlet will prove especially helpful to young women in the colleges who are looking for help and guidance in formulating plans for their future work. The only guarantee of the advancement of women beyond routine tasks and subordinate positions is the long plan including as its most important elements a thorough preparation for the work and a professional attitude toward it. Inadequate training and a medal attitude toward it on the part of many women workers account for most of the 10mg lamented closed doors. If the work is suitable for women in general and for the individual woman in particular, if her training is thorough and her interests genuine. The real bars to her success have been removed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training the Girl As was the purpose of the volume Training the Boy, so in this case it is intended to Offer a sort of whole life plan for girl training. Every phase of the life of the growing girl has received at least some measure of attention. It is not intended that all of the matters treated will apply to any one case, but that the volume may serve as a sort of brief compendium of methods, de vices, and ideals for girl training. It will be Observed that the book is divided into four very distinct parts; namely, Industrial Training, Social Training, Vocational Training, and Service Training. In the preparation of the manuscript I have become indebted to very many of my friends throughout the country for materials, suggestions, and inspirations. These persons are too numerous to mention, but I hereby extend to them a most cordial word of appreciation and thanks for their generous assistance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in Business: For Students in Commercial and General Secondary Schools This book is for boys and girls who are going out into active life rather than for those who go on to college. It will meet the needs of those commercial high schools that train ex elusively for a business career. It will also meet the needs of the general high schools with commercial departments or elective courses in business, for it contains the fundamentals of good writing for any purpose whatever. It should prove useful in all those continuation and corporation schools that give training to boys and girls who have gone to work before securing a high school diploma. 'in short, it is designed to meet the needs of all secondary schools that pursue the larger aims of business education. Business men are no longer content with boys and girls who have been prepared merely as stenographers and bookkeepers. Commercial courses, to be sure, endeavor to train young people to do one thing, or a few related things, with skill and accuracy. But they also endeavor to furnish wide knowledge of the whole business field, so that the pupil may pass easily from his first position into those business activities which his or her peculiar abilities will make most congenial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training: How Will It Help Women in the Next Century? Incidence of training by schooling, There is a strong positive correlation between schooling and company provided training. Approximately 15 percent of all college graduates in 1988 participated in company provided training programs that year. Only 5 percent of males and 7 percent of females who were a high school graduate or dropout participated in formal ou-the-job training. The relationship between schooling and off-the-job training is a bit different, especially for females. Female high school dropouts are much more likely to receive off-the-job training than female college graduates (10 percent vs. 9 percent). However, for males, the more schooling, the more likely an individual is to have participated in some off-the-job training. Incidence of training by union status, A higher percentage of union workers than nonunion workers are likely to receive on-the-job training, especially for women union members. However, this pattern reverses itself for off-the-job training with non union workers more likely to participate in off-the-job training programs than union workers. This differential pattern may be the result of union contracts containing specific policies on worker training while non union workers interested in acquiring additional skills must seek training outside the firm. We don't think any one of you would ever wish to be useless, for all girls when they grow up wish to do something. Fate seems rather hard on some girls, for it compels them to work in the world sooner than they'd wish to, to help bring money home to the family. Even if you are one of the fortunate girls who is not compelled to leave school to go to work, you may be sure of one thing, that the day will come when you'll feel a strong desire to have money earned by your own hands, and to have a job of your own. You'll soon ask yourself, What shall I do and how shall I do it? Let us allow Ruskin to help us here. There are few things more wonderful to me than that old people never tell young ones how precious their youth is. They sometimes sentimentally regret their own earlier days; sometimes prudently forget them; often foolishly rebuke the young, often more foolishly thwart and restrain; but scarcely ever warn or watch them. Remember. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Hill, litt.d., Secretary Of the Massachusetts Board of Education. IT is treacherous business for one to trace the growth Of one's own thought on an impcrtant theme. I venture to brave the pitfalls, how ever, in the case Of my views about manual training, partly because -i can conveniently illustrate in this way how teachers may unconsciously pay fragmentary tribute to the philosophy Of manual training before they know what it is, and partly because the story Of my own groping for light may lead a teacher here and there to get into the sunshine'a little more promptly than might otherwise be feasible for him. I recall that when I began to teach in - it was during the long winter vacation Of my freshman year at Bowdoin - I sometimes heard it said that it w-ould be a good thing if boys could be taught the use Of tools in school. I regarded the notion at the time as a visionary one. The school had no business with tools; they belongedto the home, to the period Of apprenticeship, to the workshop. It would be the wildest extravagance for the schools to take them up. What tools should they teach What trades should take precedence What should be done with the girls meanwhile? Does education lie that way Then I said, The hard-headed p'ublic gives it no thought. Why should I And so in this summary, self-satisfactory way, I put the matter aside as a harmless speculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the State Normal School for Women, Vol. 7: Farmville, Virginia; June, 1921; Catalogue, 1921-1922 The Virginia Normal School Board invites careful attention to the following resolutions which were adopted by the Board April 12, 1919, and which are of very great importance to the future development of the Normal Schools. Resolved, That the most fundamental work of the State Normal Schools and their most important function is to train teachers for the elementary schools. Ample provision must be made for this training and proper facilities therefor must be provided before any of the appropriation from the State or revenues from the schools can be used for any other purposes. Be it further resolved, That the increased demand in the State for teachers of high school subjects, for teachers in special departments and for rural supervisors should be met by the State Normal Schools as far as possible without interfering with their primary function. Resolved, That in order to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort and to contribute to the most economic use of public funds, the work of training high school and special teachers and rural supervisors is hereby arranged in accordance with a plan of differentiation of work which will make it unnecessary for each one of the State Normal Schools to carry the heavy burden of a large number of special courses paralleling similar courses in other schools. The work common to all of the schools will be as follows: 1. Two-year courses for the training of elementary teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education in Albany: An Opportunity and a Business If the preference is for private or parochial training, then the opportunity is equally complete. The Catholic schools offer the same well-rounded courses beginning with the kindergarten, extending through the grades, with four high schools for boys and girls and two colleges for girls. There are also private tuitionary schools for boys and for girls that take young children through the grades and prepare for college. In addition to the regular academic institutions there are schools for those requiring special consideration. In the public schools special classes are provided for those mentally retarded, for the anemic, tuberculous and deaf and for those of poor vision. A vocational school furnishes a two year course for boys and girls who prefer to prepare for a trade rather than for a more advanced academic training, and a continuation school cares for one thousand working girls and boys by giving them the type of educa tion for which they are best fitted, mechanical, commercial or domestic arts. Evening schools last year registered over 2150 pupils. They offer courses ranging all the way from first English for the foreigners who wish to learn our language, through the several grades to advanced work. In science, mathematics and technical studies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Country Schools for Missouri There is no greater problem in America today than the problem of reconstruction of education. We have made marvelous educational growth in Missouri in recent years, yet our country schools, as a class, do not measure up to the needs of today. If we are to keep the world safe for Democracy it must be through the medium of an intelligent citizenship in America. During the past school year, the average Missouri child was in school less than five months. The report of the survey made during the past year shows a condition which we, as Missourians, ought to realize and which we ought not to allow to exist in this State. The teaching of the public schools must be revised so that the right kind of training shall be given in both city and country. The child must be educated so that he can work with his hands as well as with his head. His heart must be trained and his health preserved. At the request of Governor F.D. Gardner, the State Superintendent of Public Schools, in co-operation with the Missouri State Teachers Association and other educational agencies, made a survey of the one-room country schools of this State. Some of the results of the survey are given in this publication, which is prepared by the State Department of Public Schools in co-operation with the International Harvester Company. Great credit is due Mr. T.J. Walker, State Inspector of Rural Schools of Missouri, the County Superintendents of Schools and the teachers for their efficient help in assisting the State Department of Public Schools to create interest in planning a state-wide movement for the betterment of our country schools by advocating and teaching Vitalized.
