Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

He worked as a philosopher, economist, historian, and publicist. Emmanuel Kant wrote that Hume's contemporaries misunderstood him and that Hume failed to find acceptance during his modern era. Nevertheless, Hume’s ideas greatly influenced German classical philosophy, evolutionary theory, and evolutionary sociology. His concept of empiricism and machismo were some of his most significant theories. Hume's philosophy is considered a turning point from classical philosophy to the non-classical models of our modern age. This ebook has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. One of the most central doctrines of Hume's philosophy is his notion that the mind consists of its mental perceptions, or the mental objects which are present to it, and which divide into two categories: impressions and ideas. David Hume strove to create a total naturalistic science of man that examined the psychological basis of human nature. He argued against the existence of innate ideas, positing that all human knowledge is founded solely in experience. This book presents all the main Hume's ideas and teaching, beginning with his classic statement of philosophical empiricism, skepticism, and naturalism, " A Treatise of Human Nature".

With four essays by leading Hume scholars exploring his complex intellectual legacy, this volume presents an overview of Hume’s moral, political, and social philosophy. Editors Angela Coventry and Andrew Valls bring together a selection of writings from Hume’s most important works, with contributors placing them in their appropriate context and offering a lively discourse on the relevance of Hume’s thought to contemporary subjects like reason’s dependence on emotion and the importance of social convention in political and economic behavior. Perfect for classroom use, this volume is an invaluable companion for anyone studying an important thinker who advanced the development of moral philosophy, economics, cognitive science, and many other fields of the Western tradition.

Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "On Human Nature" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume is considered by many to be his most important work and one of the most influential works in the history of philosophy. The Treatise is a classic statement of philosophical empiricism, skepticism, and naturalism. In the introduction Hume presents the idea of placing all science and philosophy on a novel foundation: namely, an empirical investigation into human nature. Contemporary philosophers have written of Hume that "no man has influenced the history of philosophy to a deeper or more disturbing degree" and that Hume's Treatise is "the founding document of cognitive science" and the "most important philosophical work written in English." Contents: Of the Understanding Of Ideas, Their Origin, Composition, Connexion, Abstraction, Etc. Of the Ideas of Space and Time. Of Knowledge and Probability. Of the Sceptical and Other Systems of Philosophy. Of the Passions Of Pride and Humility Of Love and Hatred Of the Will and Direct Passions Of Morals Of Virtue and Vice in General Of Justice and Injustice Of the Other Virtues and Vices
