Book excerpt: We review the cancellation mechanism between light and heavy neutrinos in no-neutrino double beta decay, and the limits on the mass and mixing angle for the heavy neutrino. We emphasize that the effective mass for no-neutrino double beta decay varies with atomic weight, being heavier the lighter the parent nucleus. A search for double beta decay in 48Ca will be an excellent test of this mechanism.

The distinction between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos is drawn by comparing the neutrino that accompanies a negatively charged lepton in some hadronic decay process with that which accompanies a positively charged lepton in some other decay process. Two modes of double beta decay are examined - one emitting two neutrinos and the other emitting no neutrinos. What can be learned from the existing data on double beta decay is considered, de-emphasizing the question of bounds on neutrino mass and concentrating on the properties of the phenomenon itself. Possible future experiments are anticipated. 16 refs. (LEW).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothetical type of radioactive decay in which two neutrons in the nucleus of an atom simultaneously convert into protons, emitting two electrons and no neutrinos. The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would have significant implications for our understanding of the nature of neutrinos and the properties of matter. It would prove that neutrinos are their own antiparticles (also known as Majorana particles) and that the total lepton number is not conserved. Additionally, it would provide information on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, which is currently unknown. The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would also have implications for our understanding of the matter-antimatter imbalance in the universe and the possible existence of physics beyond the standard model . The discovery of radioactivity by Henri Becquerel in 1896 opened a new dimension in the field of nuclear physics. Alpha, beta and gamma rays are the relics of radioactive decays, and their emissions are governed via strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions respectively. The energy spectrum of alpha and gamma decays are discrete in nature due to the emission of a single particle. In 1914, James Chadwick reported the continuous energy spectrum of beta radiation. In order to explain this continuous spectrum, Wolfgang Pauli proposed the emission of a chargeless and massless fermion along with beta particle and called it "neutron" . On 4ᵗʰ December 1930, Pauli wrote a letter to nuclear physicsts who were going to meet a few days later in Tiibingen, Germany, "Dear Radioactive Ladies and Gentlemen, As the bearer of these lines, to whom I graciously ask you to listen, ...... I have hit upon a desperate remedy to save the "exchange theorem" of statistics and the law of conservation of energy. Namely, the possibility that in the nuclei there could exist electrically neutral particles, which I will call neutrons, that have spin and obey the exclusion principle and that further di er from light quanta in that they do not tra el with the elocity o light. he mass o the neutrons should be of the same order of magnitude as the electron mass and in any e ent not larger than 0.01 proton mass. - he continuous beta spectrum would then make sense with the assumption that in beta decay, in addition to the electron, a neutron is emitted such that the sum o the energies of neutron and electron is constant...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 20 years the disciplines of particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear physics and cosmology have grown together in an unprecedented way. A brilliant example is nuclear double beta decay, an extremely rare radioactive decay mode, which is one of the most exciting and important fields of research in particle physics at present and the flagship of non-accelerator particle physics. While already discussed in the 1930s, only in the 1980s was it understood that neutrinoless double beta decay can yield information on the Majorana mass of the neutrino, which has an impact on the structure of space-time. Today, double beta decay is indispensable for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix. The potential of double beta decay has also been extended such that it is now one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model particle physics, and gives access to energy scales beyond the potential of future accelerators. This book presents the breathtaking manner in which achievements in particle physics have been made from a nuclear physics process. Consisting of a 150-page highly factual overview of the field of double beta decay and a 1200-page collection of the most important original articles, the book outlines the development of double beta decay research theoretical and experimental from its humble beginnings until its most recent achievements, with its revolutionary consequences for the theory of particle physics. It further presents an outlook on the exciting future of the field.

Book excerpt: Through neutrino oscillation experiments, it is now believed that neutrinos do indeed carry mass. However, with a broken helicity state, they cannot interact with the Higgs field as other fermions to gain mass. What mechanism gives neutrinos mass? This thesis contributes to a broader experiment at the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN to determine the mass generation mechanism for neutrinos. It is postulated that instead of a Dirac particle with a broken helicity state, neutrinos may be better described as a Majorana particle. In a Majorana configuration, the neutrino would be its own antiparticle with a complete helicity state. An observable signature that may indicate the neutrino as a Majorana particle is the neutrinoless double beta decay interaction. The observation of a neutrinoless double beta decay-like interaction in a collider would be strong evidence of a Majorana mass term in the Standard Model Lagrangian. This research aims to define discrimination between the neutrinoless double beta decay signal and interactions with similar signatures in simulated collider event data. These cuts would then be applied to actual collider run time data to allow for higher discernability of the potential neutrinoless double beta decay interaction.Multiple kinematic variables were investigated for discrimination between a potential neutrinoless double beta decay interaction and background processes that have similar signatures. Pre-selection cuts were determined by visual inspection of the variable histograms. Final selection cuts were made based upon selection efficiency calculations.

Journeys Beyond the Standard Model starts with a detailed and modern account of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics, the paradigm of particle physics for the last twenty years. Its timely release coincides with the recent dramatic discovery that the neutrino has a finite mass, which is the first indication that the Standard Model is an incomplete description of fundamental physics at short distances. This book presents in detail three possible generalizations of the Standard Model: its extension to accommodate neutrino masses; its extension to avoid CP violation in the strong interactions by introducing a new particle, the axion; and finally, its generalization to low-energy supersymmetry, which provides a link between the standard model and Einstein's theory of general relativity. This graduate text complements the author's previous book, Modern Field Theory: A Primer, which focuses on the methodology of particle physics. Its aim is to give students and professional physicists alike a thorough understanding of the phenomena described by the Standard Model, while keeping track of the most recent and cutting-edge principles of elementary particle physics.

Book excerpt: Using the NEMO-3 detector, 410.4 g of 116Cd with a total exposure of 1.65 kg· y and 932 g of 82Se with a total exposure of 3.75 kg· y were used to measure the half-life of two-neutrino double beta decay (2[nu][beta][beta]) to the ground states of 116Sn and 82Kr and to place a lower limit on the neutrinoless double becay decay (0[nu][beta][beta]) to the same ground states. Under the single-states dominance hypothesis, the 2[nu][beta][beta] half-lives are found to be T 1/2(116Cd) = (2.90 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.15(syst)×1019 yr and T 1/2(82Se) = [10.62±0.11(stat)±0.56(syst)]×1019 yr. 0[nu][beta][beta] is excluded to 90% confidence level at T 1/2 ≥ 1.12 × 1023 yr for 116Cd and T 1/2 ≥ 3.90 × 1023 yr for 82Se. These half-lives correspond to effective Majorana neutrino masses of m ≤ (4.33 - 5.54) eV and m ≤ (2.28 - 2.82) eV, respectively, in the light Majorana exchange mechanism.
