Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is moral theology related to pastoral theology? In this first English translation of Living the Truth, Klaus Demmer answers this question by offering a complete theory of action. Its crucial element is truthfulness, which Demmer claims is a basic attitude that must be translated concretely into our individual decisions. Demmer demonstrates that the demand for truthfulness offers a critical corrective to the usual praxis whereby ethical norms are formulated. This has significant consequences for every area of ethical directives, including questions about celibacy and partnerships. Demmer moves away from the act-centered morality that dominates the neo-Scholastic manuals of moral theology. His concern is to show how our actions embody and carry out a more original anthropological project. Not only does this anthropological project condition our insights into goods and values, it provides the criteria by which our actions are judged morally. This book will be welcomed by all who are looking for ethical norms, and by all whose task it is to formulate such norms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Testament scholarship since the Enlightenment is not quite like the histories tend to present it. It has not been the unfolding triumph of objective ''critical'' or ''historical'' thinkers over less progressive and dogmatically biased ''theological'' interests. Rather, in the same respective eras that ''critical'' thinkers like F.C. Bauer and R. Bultmann mapped out approaches to NT theology, responsible scholars from J.C.K. Hofmann to O. Cullmann have responded with viable programs of their own. This volume brings the ascendant Baur-Wrede-Bultmann line of analysis into dialogue with what may be called the salvation historical perspective, thus uncovering a line of inquiry that was significant in the past and may prove promising in the future.

Yet forty years later, few who refer to the council and its teachings, whether with approval or criticism, demonstrate a solid grasp of those teachings. Even fewer are aware of the important debates that have taken place in the past four decades regarding the council's authentic reception and implementation of its documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for Philosophy in a Time of Terror was born hours after the attacks on 9/11 and was realized just weeks later when Giovanna Borradori sat down with Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida in New York City, in separate interviews, to evaluate the significance of the most destructive terrorist act ever perpetrated. This book marks an unprecedented encounter between two of the most influential thinkers of our age as here, for the first time, Habermas and Derrida overcome their mutual antagonism and agree to appear side by side. As the two philosophers disassemble and reassemble what we think we know about terrorism, they break from the familiar social and political rhetoric increasingly polarized between good and evil. In this process, we watch two of the greatest intellects of the century at work.

Book excerpt: Reading Romans with Contemporary Philosophers and Theologians explores the recent works by philosophers and theologians who engage Paul's letter to the Romans by scholars in the fields of New Testament studies, theology and philosophy from North America and Europe. The first part of the volume is an engaging discussion of the recently published commentary Romans (Chalice Press, 2005) by co-authors John Cobb and David Lull with Jouette Bassler and David Odell-Scott. The second part of the volume offers engaging articles by Valérie Nicolet Anderson, Alain Gignac, Theodore Jennings and Ola Sigurdson which discuss recent works on Romans by continental philosophers Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou, Jacob Taubes and Slovoj Zizek, and which explore the influences of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Levinas, Benjamin, and Derrida on the recent interest in Saint Paul. The final chapter by Kathy Ehrensperger is an exploration of the possibility of a dialogue between Paul of Tarsus and Emmanuel Levinas.
