Book excerpt: Found unconscious on a remote road in the coastal rain forest, Joseph Windebank is badly injured, water-soaked, and near death. After being nursed back to health in a rural community of fishers and loggers, Joey is a changed man. His memory is gone, his wife has disappeared, and, in piecing together the mystery, Joey comes to imagine his world as a shadowy and frightening place where vampires haunt the deep woods and the dead trade their lives on the land for an eerie afterlife in the dark waters of the coastal inlets. Teased, tolerated, and nicknamed "Zero," he packs prawns at the local fish plant, making a new life for himself. But he hides a growing fear that a huge, dark, and hungry secret is rising from the depths of his past--a secret that he is better off not knowing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have the major post-9/11 US military interventions turned into quagmires? Despite huge power imbalances in the United States' favor, significant capacity-building efforts, and repeated tactical victories by what many observers call the world's best military, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq turned intractable. The US government's fixation on zero-sum, decisive victory in these conflicts is a key reason why military operations to overthrow two developing-world regimes failed to successfully achieve favorable and durable outcomes. In Zero-Sum Victory, retired US Army colonel Christopher D. Kolenda identifies three interrelated problems that have emerged from the government's insistence on zero-sum victory. First, the US government has no organized way to measure successful outcomes other than a decisive military victory, and thus, selects strategies that overestimate the possibility of such an outcome. Second, the United States is slow to recognize and modify or abandon losing strategies; in both cases, US officials believe their strategies are working, even as the situation deteriorates. Third, once the United States decides to withdraw, bargaining asymmetries and disconnects in strategy undermine the prospects for a successful transition or negotiated outcome. Relying on historic examples and personal experience, Kolenda draws thought-provoking and actionable conclusions about the utility of American military power in the contemporary world—insights that serve as a starting point for future scholarship as well as for important national security reforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel to space and back with astronaut Chris Hadfield's "enthralling" bestseller as your eye-opening guide (Slate). Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4000 hours in space. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, and been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft. The secret to Col. Hadfield's success-and survival-is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst- and enjoy every moment of it. In An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Col. Hadfield takes readers deep into his years of training and space exploration to show how to make the impossible possible. Through eye-opening, entertaining stories filled with the adrenaline of launch, the mesmerizing wonder of spacewalks, and the measured, calm responses mandated by crises, he explains how conventional wisdom can get in the way of achievement — and happiness. His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counterintuitive lessons: don't visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff. You might never be able to build a robot, pilot a spacecraft, make a music video or perform basic surgery in zero gravity like Col. Hadfield. But his vivid and refreshing insights will teach you how to think like an astronaut, and will change, completely, the way you view life on Earth — especially your own. "Hadfield proves himself to be not only a fierce explorer of the universe, but also a deeply thoughtful explorer of the human condition." —Maria Popova, Brain Pickings

Book excerpt: Battle Blast: The Story is the first part in the BATTLE BLAST series of fantasy novels. Enter the Arena with over 24 Blast-Powered characters to meet, learn, and love. This is a story about battle, conquest, uppercuts, and one more thing: punching. Experience the revelry as NORIKA JIMS deals a killer final blow to the Alien Vampire Cannon, Rothazar himself. Imagine the sweet Rock & Roll tunes from Dyce Brenners (he's the best character) and hear about how even the President of the U.S.A. gets involved! There's also a character who is an ice skeleton (GASS LOGONS) and a Chocolate Rooster named Chocadilly Doo (that part's for the kids mostly). Anyway, the book will make you cry, shudder in fear, and possibly puke from amazement at how incredible it all is. It's hard to believe that all of this happened, even in a story about it. Great stuff.

Book excerpt: FUNNY, SAD, ENLIGHTENING--- THOUGHT PROVOKING INSIGHTS INTO AMERICAN HISTORY AND LIFE IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY-- NOT JUST ANOTHER JADED AMERICAN PYSCHE--- TAKE THE JOURNEY WITH TRAVIS N. TARKINGTON, A ROGUE DRONE KNOWN AS NINER, AND A CLONE NAMED ZEL AS THEY SEARCH FOR ANSWERS TO HOW HU-MANIMALS BECAME THE LEAST VALUED OF ALL SPECIES AND HOW THE ETERNALS CAME TO POWER. HE WEAVES A HUMOROUS YET DARK PICTURE OF THE FUTURE. "It was when I first read CS Lewis that I began to see that astute and watchful men were aware of this progressive movement during the ages in which they lived. Anyway, what Lewis was saying about his world in the 1940's was that socialism already waxed a sway over people. He talks about society being ignorant (willingly so) due to their attachment to the existing humanistic philosophies of his generation. Lewis wasn't the only writer to see this blackness creeping into the political agenda of men. Hundreds of writers throughout history knew of this sinister thread being woven into the mural of mankind. I had only found one small thread. I wanted to know how we got to the point where our own government killed us and called us Hu-manimals instead of people. It is so outrageous, so insane that I couldn't believe it myself, and how did you convince others of a plot even you could not believe? I needed proof. Of course the SG had sent these flying bird drones to kill off us remaining stragglers. The cowards had not come themselves. It was a numbing realization to know you were targeted for extinction. It struck me that reality had flipped flopped. It was hunting season in reverse. Blimy! This time the drone birds had the guns, and they were shooting first!" A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY, TRUTH, AND ONE THAT BY THE END BECOMES AS CLEAR AS A YELLOW BRICK ROAD-

Book excerpt: From the memoir: First, there was a violent pitch forward. The canopy filed with the brown scenery of the ground below, leaving the blue sky behind. Oh, God, what happened, echoed in my ears as my backseater, unaware of why the collision had occurred, struggled to maintain control of our aircraft. I slammed myself back into the seat, locked the shoulder harness, and prepared for impact and certain death. Every warning horn blared, robbing us of even one silent moment. The impact was tremendous. Under the callsign of Paladin Zero Six, Captain Rafael J. Garcia, Jr., piloted an Apache helicopter on reconnaissance flights into Iraq during Operation Desert storm and led a range of combat missions. His battalion fired the first shots of the war on January 17, 1991, destroying the border radar sites and clearing a radar-free path to Baghdad. The author matured as a leader in discovering the gritty reality of war, the monotony of the waiting and the fatigue that accompanied the fighting.

Book excerpt: Lying there, drifting up into those ancient lights was exactly like looking into the past. It is looking into the past. History, I think, is just a property of light. Charlie Fairbanks was born in the dead center of the United States at the dead center of the twentieth century. Americans are going to the Moon and Charlie's sure he'll be the first one there. But as he shines his spotlight on the Moon, so too does it illuminate the darker side to his nation's history. Radio is a story about memory, love and spaceships.
