Book excerpt: LA COMMANDE ADAPTATIVE DES SYSTEMES A DEPHASAGE NON-MINIMAL QUI UTILISE LA TECHNIQUE DE PLACEMENT DES POLES EST UNE APPROCHE PERMETTANT D'ATTAQUER LE PROBLEME DE COMPENSATION DES POLES ET ZEROS DANS LE CAS D'UN SYSTEME A PARAMETRES INCONNUS. ON PEUT RENCONTRER DES PROBLEMES DES SINGULARITES DANS LA LOI DE COMMANDE, PLUS PRECISEMENT LE MODELE ESTIME DU SYSTEME PEUT DEVENIR NON COMMANDABLE, LORSQUE L'EXCITATION SUR LE SYSTEME N'EST PAS SUFFISAMMENT RICHE, ET EN CONSEQUENCE L'ENTREE DE COMMANDE NE PEUT PAS ETRE CALCULEE. ON SAIT QUE CES PROBLEMES SONT TRES IMPORTANTS, SIGNIFICATIFS, ET INTERESSANTS DANS LE DEVELOPPEMENT DE LA THEORIE DE LA COMMANDE ADAPTATIVE. CETTE THESE PRESENTE UN SCHEMA DE COMMANDE ADAPTATIVE DE PLACEMENT DES POLES POUR LES SYSTEMES LINEAIRES, NON NECESSAIREMENT A MINIMUM DE PHASE. LE SCHEMA DE COMMANDE REALISE ASYMPTOTIQUEMENT LE PLACEMENT DES POLES ADAPTATIFS SANS INTRODUIRE LES SIGNAUX D'EXCITATION PERSISTANTE DANS LES SYSTEMES ET SANS SUPPOSER AUCUNE CONNAISSANCE A PRIORI SUR LES PARAMETRES DU SYSTEME. L'ORDRE DU SYSTEME EST LA SEULE CONNAISSANCE A PRIORI NECESSAIRE POUR CONSTRUIRE LA LOI DE COMMANDE ADAPTATIVE. NOTRE LOI DE COMMANDE ADAPTATIVE ELIMINE LES SINGULARITES DANS LE SENS QUE LE MODELE DU SYSTEME ESTIME EST TOUJOURS COMMANDABLE. LES SINGULARITES SONT SURMONTEES PAR UNE MODIFICATION CONVENABLE DES PARAMETRES ESTIMES QUI EST BASEE SUR LES PROPRIETES DE LA MATRICE DE COVARIANCE DE L'ALGORITHME DES MOINDRES CARRES. L'ANALYSE DE LA STABILITE ET DE LA CONVERGENCE GLOBALE DES SYSTEMES EN BOUCLE FERMEE SONT DONNEES EN DETAIL POUR LES SYSTEMES DISCRETS ET LES SYSTEMES CONTINUS. NOUS AVONS MONTRE L'UTILITE ET L'EFFICACITE DE CETTE TECHNIQUE POUR RESOUDRE LES PROBLEMES DES SINGULARITES. NEANMOINS, NOTRE APPROCHE RESTE NON OPTIMALE DANS LE SENS DE LA LOURDEUR DU CALCUL QU'ELLE NECESSITE

Book excerpt: The essays in this edited volume, written in English and French, tackle the intriguing problems of fear and safety by analysing their various meanings and manifestations in literature and other narrative media. The articles bring forth new, cross-cultural interpretations on fear and safety through examining what kinds of genre-specific means of world-making narratives use to express these two affectivities. The articles also show how important it is to study these themes in order to understand challenges in times of global threats, such as the climate crisis, and - to imagine a better future. The main themes of the book are approached from various theoretical perspectives as related to their literary and cultural representations. Recent trends in research, such as affect and risk theory, serve as the basis for the discussion. Many of the articles in the volume discuss apocalyptic and dystopian narratives that currently permeate the entire cultural landscape. Dystopian narratives do not only deal with future threats, such as totalitarianism, technocracy, or environmental disasters, but also suggest alternative ways of being and new hopes in the form of political resistance. The articles in the volume also draw from disciplines such as gender studies and trauma studies to examine the threats posed by collective fears and aggression on individuals' lives and propose ways of coping with fear. These themes are addressed also in articles analysing new adaptations of old myths that retell stories of the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many contemporary environmental risks and global environmental changes occurring today are unprecedented in the history of human life on earth. However, the images and narratives through which humans relate to these phenomena are built on existing cultural tropes and narrative models. Cultural, social, and historical contexts strongly influence how we construct images and narratives of nature and the environment. It is therefore highly important to study such narratives in works of literature, film, and other forms of cultural expression in relation to the specific circumstances from which they arise. Nordic Narratives of Nature and the Environment is the first English language anthology that presents ecocritical research on northern European literatures and cultures. The contributors examine specifically Nordic narratives of nature and the environment, with a focus on the cultures and literatures of the modern northern European countries Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, including Sápmi, which is the land traditionally inhabited by the indigenous Sami people. Covering northern European literatures and cultures over a period of more than two centuries, this anthology provides substantial insights into both old and new narratives of nature and the environment as well as intertextual relations, the variety of cultural traditions, and current discourses connected to the Nordic environmental imagination. Case studies relating to works of literature, film, and other media shed new light on the role of culture, history and society in the formation of narratives of nature and the environment, and offer a comprehensive and multi-faceted overview of the most recent ecocritical research in Scandinavian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiences of Depression is a philosophical exploration of what it is like to be depressed. In this important new book, Matthew Ratcliffe develops a detailed account of depression experiences by drawing on work in phenomenology, philosophy of mind, and several other disciplines. In so doing, he makes clear how phenomenological research can contribute to psychiatry, by helping us to better understand patients' experiences, as well as informing classification, diagnosis, and treatment. Throughout the book, Ratcliffe also emphasizes the relevance of depression to philosophical enquiry. He proposes that, by reflecting on how experiences of depression differ from 'healthy' forms of experience, we can refine our understanding of both. Hence phenomenological research of this kind has much wider applicability. He further shows how the study of depression experiences can inform philosophical approaches to a range of topics, including interpersonal understanding and empathy, free will, the experience of time, the nature of emotion and feeling, what it is to believe something, and what it is to hope. This book will be of interest to anyone seeking to understand and relate to experiences of depression, including philosophers, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, therapists, and those who have been directly or indirectly affected by depression.

Book excerpt: This book brings together researchers with cognitive-scientific and literary backgrounds to present innovative research in all three variations on the possible interactions between literary studies and cognitive science. The tripartite structure of the volume reflects a more ambitious conception of what cognitive approaches to literature are and could be than is usually encountered, and thus aims both to map out and to advance the field. The first section corresponds to what most people think of as "cognitive poetics" or "cognitive literary studies": the study of literature by literary scholars drawing on cognitive-scientific methods, findings, and/or debates to yield insights into literature. The second section demonstrates that literary scholars needn't only make use of cognitive science to study literature, but can also, in a reciprocally interdisciplinary manner, use a cognitively informed perspective on literature to offer benefits back to the cognitive sciences. Finally, the third section, "literature in cognitive science", showcases some of the ways in which literature can be a stimulating object of study and a fertile testing ground for theories and models, not only to literary scholars but also to cognitive scientists, who here engage with some key questions in cognitive literary studies with the benefit of their in-depth scientific knowledge and training.

Book excerpt: In Cultures of Fear, a truly world-class line up of scholars explore how governments use fear in order to control their citizens. The "social contract" gives modern states responsibility for the security of their citizens, but this collection argues that governments often nurture a culture of fear within their contries. When people are scared of "terrorist" threats, or "alarming rises" in violent crime they are more likely to accept oppressive laws from their rulers. Cultures of Fear is and interdisciplinary reader for students of anthropology and politics. Contributors include Noam Chomsky, Slavoj Zizek, Jean Baudrillard, Catharine MacKinnon, Neil Smith, Cynthia Enloe, David L. Altheide, Cynthia Cockburn and Carolyn Nordstrum.
