Book excerpt: Composite Model Generation-Boundary Element Method (COMGEN-BEM) is a program developed in PATRAN command language (PCL) which generates boundary element models of continuous fiber composites at the micromechanical (constituent) scale. Based on the entry of a few simple parameters such as fiber volume fraction and fiber diameter, the model geometry and boundary element model are generated. In addition, various mesh densities, material properties, fiber orientation angles, loads, and boundary conditions can be specified. The generated model can then be translated to a format consistent with a boundary element analysis code such as BEST-CMS. Goldberg, Robert K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite element analysis has been widely applied in mechanical, civil, and biomedical designs. This book aims to provide the readers comprehensive views of various material models with practical examples, which would help readers understand various materials, and build appropriate material models in the finite element analysis. This book is composed of four main parts: 1) metals, 2) polymers, 3) soils, and 4) modern materials. Each part starts with the structure and function of different materials and then follows the corresponding material models such as BISO, MISO, Chaboche model in metals, Arruda-Boyce model, Mooney-Rivlin model, Ogden model in polymers, Mohr-Coulomb model, Cam Clay model and Jointed Rock model in geomechanics, composites and shape memory alloys in modern materials. The final section presents some specific problems, such as metal forming process, combustion chamber, Mullins effect of rubber tire, breast shape after breast surgery, viscoelasticity of liver soft tissues, tunnel excavation, slope stability, orthodontic wire, and piezoelectric microaccelerometer. All modeling files are provided in the appendixes of the book. This book would be helpful for graduate students and researchers in the mechanical, civil, and biomedical fields who conduct finite element analysis. The book provides all readers with comprehensive understanding of modeling various materials.

This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed from the author’s graduate-level course on advanced mechanics of composite materials, Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials with AbaqusTM shows how powerful finite element tools address practical problems in the structural analysis of composites. Unlike other texts, this one takes the theory to a hands-on level by actually solving problems. It explains the concepts involved in the detailed analysis of composites, the mechanics needed to translate those concepts into a mathematical representation of the physical reality, and the solution of the resulting boundary value problems using the commercial finite element analysis software Abaqus. The first seven chapters provide material ideal for a one-semester course. Along with offering an introduction to finite element analysis for readers without prior knowledge of the finite element method (FEM), these chapters cover the elasticity and strength of laminates, buckling analysis, free edge stresses, computational micromechanics, and viscoelastic models and composites. Emphasizing hereditary phenomena, the book goes on to discuss continuum and discrete damage mechanics as well as delaminations. More than 50 fully developed examples are interspersed with the theory, more than 75 exercises are included at the end of each chapter, and more than 50 separate pieces of Abaqus pseudocode illustrate the solution of example problems. The author’s website offers the relevant Abaqus and MATLAB® model files available for download, enabling readers to easily reproduce the examples and complete the exercises. The text also shows readers how to extend the capabilities of Abaqus via "user subroutines" and Python scripting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary element method (BEM) is a modern numerical technique, which has enjoyed increasing popularity over the last two decades, and is now an established alternative to traditional computational methods of engineering analysis. The main advantage of the BEM is its unique ability to provide a complete solution in terms of boundary values only, with substantial savings in modelling effort. This two-volume book set is designed to provide the readers with a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the boundary element method and its application to solving engineering problems. Each volume is a self-contained book including a substantial amount of material not previously covered by other text books on the subject. Volume 1 covers applications to heat transfer, acoustics, electrochemistry and fluid mechanics problems, while volume 2 concentrates on solids and structures, describing applications to elasticity, plasticity, elastodynamics, fracture mechanics and contact analysis. The early chapters are designed as a teaching text for final year undergraduate courses. Both volumes reflect the experience of the authors over a period of more than twenty years of boundary element research. This volume, Applications in Solids and Structures, provides a comprehensive presentation of the BEM from fundamentals to advanced engineering applications and encompasses: Elasticity for 2D, 3D and Plates and Shells Non-linear, Transient and Thermal Stress Analysis Crack Growth and Multi-body Contact Mechanics Sensitivity Analysis and Optimisation Analysis of Assembled Structures. An important feature of this book is the in-depth presentation of BEM formulations in all the above fields, including detailed discussions of the basic theory, numerical algorithms and where possible simple examples are included, as well as test results for practical engineering applications of the method. Although most of the methods presented are the latest developments in the field, the author has included some simple techniques, which are helpful in understanding the computer implementation of BEM. Another notable feature is the comprehensive presentation of a new generation of boundary elements known as the Dual Boundary Element Method. Written by an internationally recognised authority in the field, this is essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and practitioners in Aerospace, Mechanical and Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics.
