Book excerpt: “If you’ve been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, this is it.”—Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Boundaries “Michael Easter’s genius is that he puts data around the edges of what we intuitively believe. His work has inspired many to change their lives for the better.”—Dr. Peter Attia, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlive Discover the evolutionary mind and body benefits of living at the edges of your comfort zone and reconnecting with the wild—from the author of Scarcity Brain, coming in September! In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort. Easter’s journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to meet the NBA’s top exercise scientist, who uses an ancient Japanese practice to build championship athletes; to the mystical country of Bhutan, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who’s found that nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways that expand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding thirty-three-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places on Earth; and more. Along the way, Easter uncovers a blueprint for leveraging the power of discomfort that will dramatically improve our health and happiness, and perhaps even help us understand what it means to be human. The Comfort Crisis is a bold call to break out of your comfort zone and explore the wild within yourself.

Using his own research and experiences throughout the world, the author recounts how and why humans evolved to walk, run, dig, and do other necessary and rewarding physical activities while avoiding needless exertion. Drawing on insights from biology and anthropology, the author suggests how we can make exercise more enjoyable, rather that shaming and blaming people for avoiding it

VI THE IDEAL GYMNASIUM HE standard is not too high, nor the require A ment exaggerated, that demands that "capable teachers in an ideal gymnasium must be well versed in physiology, psychology, and pedagogy; must know something of human kind, its powers and means of growth, and of the world and what kind of men and women it needs; they must be able to develop mental, moral, and physical alike, till each nature acts as stimulant and counterbalance for the others; they must know the laws of motion and expression and their methods, whereby even the exceptional and inexplicable which we call genius may be educated." With such a standard the gymnasium stands high and strong and attractive among the educational institutions of the world; with any lowering of its standard it drops to the ranks of sensationalism and charlatanry. The first problem that confronts a teacher of gymnastics is the adjustment of environment to the work, --the selection and arrangement of a gymnasium whose cleanly convenience and attractiveness shall be of a kind that is inspiring and educating to sense and thought and feeling. The importance of immaculate cleanliness should not need to be emphasized in these days when sanitary safety is very generally appreciated; now, too, the convenience of gymnasium appointment is luxuriously provided with abundant, interesting, wellarranged apparatus and alluring baths. The aesthetic equipment, however, of an educational gymnasium is as important as any other element of the problem. An unlovely environment is a discouraging field for the culture of an instinct for beauty; while aesthetic stimulation from harmonious environment is an immeasurable help to teachers and students alike. A harmonious appointment of the gymnasium cannot...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about my radical personal health transformation: to share my weight loss journey, building muscle strength, and much more. I am writing this book upon the request of all my friends about how I did it at the age of 50. I have delivered numerous lecturing courses and speeches to share my personal experience on this journey. Now is the time to share my story with more people globally. Key points to know: Delicious food/ no hunger: If you want to lose weight, it is not necessary to keep yourself unsatisfied with boring food or in a state of hunger all the time. Easy exercise/ stay in the comfort zone*: If you want to build muscle strength, it is not necessary to push yourself hard in keeping up with exercise/ training which you don't really enjoy. It then easily can becomes a happy sustainable lifestyle with longevity. * Comfort zone definition in this book (hereafter, Comfort Zone): In this context the comfort zone is not framed negatively: fitness can be gained within your own limits and level of comfort, without stress. I have learned it is a dynamic concept. In the short term, your Comfort Zone moves up and down according to your physical and mental conditions. In the long term, your Comfort Zone evolves and eventually shifts to the next level. My family knew me as a lazy person and it was a family joke. Just like many people, I would say "I wanted to lose weight" all the time but took no meaningful or effective action. All of that has now changed. Weight loss is not something that I have to constantly remind myself about. My weight is now stable regardless of how much delicious food I eat (within my stomach limit). During my 20s and 30s, I tried numerous methods including hard core exercise, but it did not last long. In fact, anything that is not easy will NOT sustain for long, as it is human nature to not commit to anything challenging for too long. I am a self confessed lazy person. Historically I have never liked to do any exercise unless I had to achieve something (e.g., cycling around Taiwan). Never did I even enter a gym. Now I exercise daily, and I attend gym workouts every other day. Anything that is not interesting will not be pleasurable to me. It is human nature. I believe that there are many reading this with similar thoughts/ experiences. That's the purpose, to share with you my own journey: an easy to do strategy as "happy" solutions in this book. Find your own Comfort Zone; make progress towards your own health and fitness freedom. Dr. I Han February 2024/ England

You're not bound by the constraints of gym hours or long commutes. You can exercise at any time that suits your schedule, making it easier to establish a consistent routine. For many beginners, the idea of working out in a crowded gym can be intimidating. Exercising at home provides a private and comfortable setting where you can build confidence and focus on your fitness journey without any self-consciousness. Gym memberships and fitness classes can be expensive. Home workouts eliminate the need for these recurring expenses, making fitness more affordable, especially for those just starting. Exercising at home allows you to tailor your workouts to your specific goals, preferences, and comfort level. You can choose exercises that align with your interests and adapt routines as you progress. While you can invest in equipment, many effective home workouts can be done with little to no equipment. This makes it accessible for individuals with limited space or budget. Home workouts can be a great way to involve family members or create a sense of community with others who share similar fitness goals. It's an excellent way to encourage family bonding and mutual support. Especially relevant during times of public health concerns, exercising at home minimizes exposure to crowded spaces and provides a more controlled and hygienic environment.
