Book excerpt: L’exploitation des réacteurs à eau pressurisée génère des produits de fission et d’actinides mineurs (Np, Am, Cm) qui sont potentiellement recyclables par leur transmutation en réacteurs à neutrons rapides. Dans ce contexte, l’objectif de la thèse a été d’étudier les conditions de fabrication de nouveaux combustibles de type U1-yAmyO2±x dont les spécificités thermodynamiques requièrent un contrôle précis du potentiel d’oxygène lors du frittage. Une première étape vers cette maîtrise du procédé a été réalisée en développant un modèle thermodynamique permettant de déterminer les conditions optimales de frittage et à partir duquel des matériaux U1-yAmyO2±x (y=0,10; 0,15; 0,20; 0,30) ont été élaborés. En conditions surstoechiométriques à basse température, les composés sont multiphasés et poreux alors que dans le cas des conditions réductrices à haute température, les matériaux obtenus sont monophasés de structure fluorine et denses. Les analyses de XAFS ont permis d’apporter des points expérimentaux supplémentaires pour l’ajustement du modèle thermodynamique et ont également mis en évidence la réduction totale d’Am(+IV) en Am(+III). Celle-ci s’accompagne de l’oxydation partielle d’U(+IV) en U(+V) qui résulte d’un mécanisme de compensation de charge. Enfin, compte tenu de l’activité α élevée de l’Am, l'effet de l'auto-irradiation a été étudié pour deux types de microstructure et deux teneurs en Am (10 et 15%). Pour chaque composition, on observe une expansion du paramètre de maille sans changement de phase combinée à un gonflement macroscopique du diamètre des pastilles pouvant atteindre 1,2% dans le cas des composés denses et 0,6% pour les matériaux à porosité contrôlée.

Book excerpt: Cette étude s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une gestion commune de l'uranium et du plutonium par un procédé original reposant sur l'échange cationique au sein de nanoclusters d'uranyle et qui permet une utilisation directe de ces précurseurs double pour la fabrication de pastilles d'oxyde mixte. Les travaux de la thèse ont visé à démontrer que des composés peroxo-hydroxydes double d'uranyle et d'ions terres-rares (utilisés comme simulants des actinides mineurs) pouvaient répondre à cet objectif industriel. La démarche de compréhension a été décomposée en deux grandes étapes, (i) l'obtention d'une poudre d'oxyde mixte de type fluorine par décomposition thermique des sels initiaux puis, (ii) la fabrication de pastilles densifiées aux caractéristiques microstructurales optimisées. Pour ces deux étapes, les analyses expérimentales ont été réalisées par des approches ex-situ et in-situ, et cela pour des conditions opératoires variées en température et en nature de l'atmosphère réactionnelle. Les mécanismes et phénomènes physico-chimiques associés aux transformations ont été principalement étudiés par dosages chimiques des espèces (redox et ICP-AES), diffraction des rayons X, spectroscopies UV-visible, infrarouge et d'absorption X, analyses thermiques, (ATG-MS, ATG-ATD, dilatométrie) et observations en microscopie optique, électronique à balayage et en transmission. La décomposition thermique conduisant à l'obtention d'une poudre d'oxyde mixte homogène apparait régie par deux paramètres clés, la diffusion de l'élément d'ajout (Nd ou Ce) au sein des phases uranifères et la pression partielle en oxygène. Les travaux montrent également que les transformations successives sont qualitativement isomorphiques, et que les distributions en taille et en forme des particules du précurseurs demeurent jusqu'à la phase d'oxyde de type fluorine. Le procédé d'obtention du précurseur par une voie d'hydrométallurgie offre des poudres de grande surface spécifique. Bien qu'il n'ait pas été possible d'extraire les paramètres thermodynamiques du frittage par les expériences in-situ, les analyses ex-situ des pastilles densifiées laissent supposer que les mécanismes densifiant reposeraient sur une diffusion aux joints de grains. Les observations microstructurales ont permis de montrer une distribution homogène des grains et de la distribution des cations métalliques en solution solide. Les résultats de la thèse confortent grandement les potentialités de cette voie originale reposant sur l'emploi de précurseurs peroxo-hydroxyde double d'uranyle et de terre-rare pour une gestion commune de l'uranium et du plutonium dans des usines de retraitement du futur.
