When psychosocial factors have been researched in terms of adolescent physical activity participation, it has been found that parents play an important role. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between parental support and young adolescents' physical activity behaviors. In this study a total of ninety-eight 5th and 6th grade student participants (n = 54 male, n = 44 female) ranging in age from 10 to 14 years (M age=11.7 yrs, SD =0.65) from the Rocky Mountain U.S. were administered questionnaires. Parents of all student participants were also asked to participate in this study, and 112 (n = 19 father, n = 94 mother) parent responses were received. Student participants completed a questionnaire which assessed importance and enjoyment of physical activity, perceived parental social support, and physical activity levels. Parent participants completed a questionnaire which assessed support for their child's physical activity, importance and enjoyment of physical activity for them and for their child, relative importance of physical activity for their child, and parent physical activity levels. Overall, participants reported engaging in 69.28 min of MVPA per day for children, 59.91 min of MVPA per day for fathers and 37.13 min of MVPA for mothers. Book excerpt: Compared to ethnic groups, Latinos are disproportionally at risk for developing chronic diseases that are preventable with adequate physical activity, which has been effective in lowering health risks. Latino youths are the least physically active among adolescents; however, factors influencing their physical activity are understudied. Latent growth structural equation modeling was used for the analyses of cohort-sequential longitudinal secondary data. Tests of invariance indicated that data was equivalent across the cohorts. This study examined moderate physical activity (MPA) and vigorous physical activity (VPA) trajectories in a nonprobability sample of 615 self-reported Latino adolescents aged 14 to 18 using an adapted theoretical framework, Pender's Health Promotion model. It also examined the effects of age; gender; family annual income; parent's marital status; and self-perceptions in physical appearance, body weight, athletic competence, social acceptance, global self-worth, ethnic identity, social connectedness, and parent-adolescent communication on physical activity intercept and slope. The analyses included addressing subsets of incomplete data, and maximum likelihood methodology was used to decrease bias in the likelihood estimates. Findings revealed two distinctive physical activity trajectories with different influences through middle adolescence in Latino youths. The average MPA was below recommendations and steady without gender differences, whereas the average VPA met national recommendations with gender differences at initial status and declined linearly and steadily in both girls and boys. Almost 6 out of 10 parents reported an annual family income of US$40,000 or less, and 64.5% were married at enrollment. Salient findings indicated that having a family with a higher annual income than others or married parents did not impact physical activity in Latino youths. However, those who showed more athletic competence also had more VPA when they were in grade 9, and those with more parent-adolescent communication or more changes in body weight perceptions had more MPA. Those with the highest scores in social connectedness had less MPA when participants were in grade 9, and those with the largest gains in social connectedness had a lower VPA change rate. Implications of the findings for nursing practice, education policy, and research are discussed

Book excerpt: Latinas in the United States report high levels of physical inactivity and are disproportionately burdened by associated chronic diseases, demonstrating the need for innovative approaches to reducing these disparities. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate self-reported changes in physical activity and social support, and to examine the association between physical activity and acculturation, following a one month culturally and linguistically adapted, theory-driven (Social Cognitive Theory and Transtheoretical Model) Internet-based physical activity intervention for Latina adults. Data was collected from Spanish-speaking Latinas (N=24) between the ages of 21-61 years (M=35.17, SD=11.22) enrolled in a web-based physical activity pilot study. Paired t-tests and Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used to assess pre-post changes in self-reported physical activity and social support for exercise from baseline to one-month. Bivariate regression analyses were used to assess whether pre-post changes in social support were associated with pre-post changes in physical activity, and whether baseline level of acculturation was associated with pre-post changes in physical activity. Study completers reported significant increases in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity from an average of 29.05 (SD= 34.01) minutes per week at baseline to 125.48 (SD= 148.22) minutes per week at one-month (p= .003). Non-parametric tests also indicated significant increases in physical activity from baseline to one month. There were no significant changes in social support from baseline to one month and no significant association between pre-post changes in social support and pre-post changes in physical activity. Baseline level of acculturation was not significantly associated with pre-post changes in physical activity. Results from this study provide preliminary support for the use of culturally adapted Internet-based interventions for promoting physical activity among Latina adults. Further research with larger, more diverse samples of Latinas and randomized controlled designs is necessary to understand the impact of using Internet-based interventions for reducing physical activity disparities among Latinas, as well as the relationship between psychosocial variables such as social support and acculturation and physical activity in this community.

Book excerpt: Dynamics of social network and social support for physical activity and sedentary behavior are not fully understood. This study examined the relationship of physical activity and sedentary behavior in adolescents within the students' networks of friends and social support. The study was framed in the social network analysis theory and utilized a quantitative, correlational research design in a sample of 602 participants between the ages of 13 to 17 from urban and rural schools in the Caribbean region of Colombia. Participants reported their closest friends who provided social support, their physical activity, sedentary behavior, and perceived social support levels on questionnaires. Exponential random graph models (ERGMs) were used to analyze constructs or network parameters related to structural network and node-level effects. Results showed that reciprocal friendship and friend clusters were distinctive in the networks. Homophily and popularity were associated with physical activity and screen-related sitting time. Social support for sedentary behavior was a social phenomenon observed less frequently and generated different network structures compared to perceived social support for physical activity. Attributes related to physical activity and sedentary behavior had independent network effects on perceived social support. Results reflect strong friendships and give prominence to physical activity as a relevant attribute for providing social support. The study evidenced the relevance of physical activity and sedentary behavior related to friends' selection and social support. Results represent a meaningful input to the understanding of social support networks for physical activity and sedentary behavior in the Caribbean region of Colombia and are helpful to strengthen educational strategies.

Book excerpt: Many health benefits from organized sport are achieved primarily through physical activity.1 Children and adolescents who participate in organized sport have a higher level of physical activity later in life and lead healthier lives in their adulthood.2,3 Because physical activity in youth is often executed in an organized manner, organized sport's role in society has become increasingly important over the years, not just for the benefit of an individual but for public health.4-6 Despite the many benefits of organized sport, these benefits are not always accessible or equitable to all children and adolescents.7-9 These disparities in health, well-being, quality of life, and socioeconomic status (SES) inequities can be a cause of the SDOH. Athletic trainers are health care providers that are uniquely positioned in an optimal public health intersection and can provide direct care for their low SES patient population that is impacted by the SDOH. The primary purposes of this dissertation were to 1) further understanding of youth sport participation experiences from low socioeconomic status families to now of Hispanic/Latinx families10, 2) quantify perceptions of clinical management decisions toward low SES student athletes in a group of medical providers and public health advocates, and 3) identify challenges and strategies to upholding a standard of care when providing care to low SES patient population in the secondary school setting. Study 1: 12 Hispanic/Latinx parents and their high school aged children participated in this study. Hispanic/Latinx families described expectations of time and money that were exacerbated by the current youth sport culture. These families met the current youth sport expectations by methods rooted in their culture. When expectations were not met, this led to a misalignment of cultures and resulted in a negative youth sport experience. Study 2: A total of 380 secondary school athletic trainers completed the quantitative aim of this study through a cross-sectional survey regarding their perceptions of the SDOH and SES related to providing patient care. 12 ATs participated in the qualitative aim of this study. ATs perceived health and health care as the most relevant determinant when providing care to low SES patients. When ATs further considered the SES of patients, they identified all SDOHs as barriers they were ill equipped to navigate as they delivered care and engaged in patient referral.
