Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1942 and aimed at the Home Guard, this booklet - generously illustrated with photos of the unarmed combat tactics it describes - seeks to impart simple but effective techniques for dealing with both an armed and un-armed attacker. The techniques it describes range from escaping a stranglehold; coping with an enemy who digs a pistol into your back; and a guide to vulnerable parts of the body. Its advice ranges from the straightforward: 'If you are handy with your fists nothing can beat a good, solid punch on the jaw', to the deadly: 'A well-delivered rabbit punch just under the ears will at least dislocate the neck, and very probably break it'. This is a timeless and still extremely useful guide for defending oneself without weapons in dangerous times. "This book is published strictly for historical purposes. The Naval and Military Press Ltd expressly bears no responsibility or liability of any type, to any first, second or third party, for any harm, injury or loss whatsoever."

He is remembered as having been a self-defence expert, successful author, politician and Governor of Bermuda. Despite his endorsement of violent acts against other human beings, as described in his book, Combat Without Weapons, Sir Edwin was a freemason and Anglican lay reader. How he wrestled with the two opposites of aggression v. faith can only be conjectured, but his book was innovative at the time. Historically, the basis for the killing and maiming methods he proposes came about when Edward William Barton-Wright founded his Bartitsu School of Arms in London in 1898. In 1900, Barton-Wright invited S. K. Uyenishi, to teach jujitsu and his methods proved so successful that he began teaching extreme versions to army officers. Following the sowing of these first seeds, jujitsu self-defence techniques spread throughout Britain and abroad, And the rest is now history.

I can't recommend it highly enough." —Bill Gates The era of autonomous weapons has arrived. Today around the globe, at least thirty nations have weapons that can search for and destroy enemy targets all on their own. Paul Scharre, a leading expert in next-generation warfare, describes these and other high tech weapons systems—from Israel’s Harpy drone to the American submarine-hunting robot ship Sea Hunter—and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. “A smart primer to what’s to come in warfare” (Bruce Schneier), Army of None engages military history, global policy, and cutting-edge science to explore the implications of giving weapons the freedom to make life and death decisions. A former soldier himself, Scharre argues that we must embrace technology where it can make war more precise and humane, but when the choice is life or death, there is no replacement for the human heart.

There may be an interactive relationship between policy, strategy and weaponry but, he contends, policy and strategy always take the front seat.

The continued interest in and demand for an illustrated book on this subject resulted in its reissue in its wartime format. The author, of the Royal Canadian Artillery, believes that knowledge of self-defense is a sound investment on anybody's part at any time - not just during war - and he sets out to provide that knowledge. The text is clear and straightforward, and the illustrations make misunderstanding impossible. This book is essential for anybody with an interest in self-defense, weapons or military combat

Book excerpt: A former firearms executive pulls back the curtain on America's multibillion-dollar gun industry, exposing how it fostered extremism and racism, radicalizing the nation and bringing cultural division to a boiling point. As an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and conservationist–all things that the firearms industry was built on–Ryan Busse chased a childhood dream and built a successful career selling millions of firearms for one of America’s most popular gun companies. But blinded by the promise of massive profits, the gun industry abandoned its self-imposed decency in favor of hardline conservatism and McCarthyesque internal policing, sowing irreparable division in our politics and society. That drove Busse to do something few other gun executives have done: he's ending his 30-year career in the industry to show us how and why we got here. Gunfight is an insider’s call-out of a wild, secretive, and critically important industry. It shows us how America's gun industry shifted from prioritizing safety and ethics to one that is addicted to fear, conspiracy, intolerance, and secrecy. It recounts Busse's personal transformation and shows how authoritarianism spreads in the guise of freedom, how voicing one's conscience becomes an act of treason in a culture that demands sameness and loyalty. Gunfight offers a valuable perspective as the nation struggles to choose between armed violence or healing.
