Book excerpt: This new novel tells the story of a veteran returning home from the war. After serving three tours in Afghanistan, Roy Calhoun, whose mind now often works on a sixth-grade level, comes home to Jacksonville, Florida to try and live a normal life, which is difficult to do with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He is fortunate enough to be introduced to a psychologist named Parker Boyce, who not only treats him with therapy but befriends him as well. He takes Roy into his upscale home in an affluent neighborhood of the 1% and treats him like he is a part of the family, even hiring him as caretaker and helping him start classes at the local community college. Parker Boyce's wife has a younger sister, Roberta, who comes to visit and a romance begins to develop between Roberta and Roy. She convinces him to attend some of the Occupy Wall Street protests that are going on in major cities all over the country. With help from his Xanax prescription, Roy attends rallies with Roberta, although he never really seems to understand the 1% vs. 99% confrontations that take place. He spends very little time having Afghanistan flashbacks and is able to function well with therapy and medicine, until a moment comes one day when he loses control and shows a side of himself he has tried to keep hidden.

Book excerpt: "This volume is an exciting, eclectic collection of essays in honor of Kermit S. Champa, a leading scholar of impressionism and critic of twentieth-century art. The lead essay by David Carrier is followed by others from several generations of scholars and museum curators trained by Professor Champa. Together, they cover an extremely wide historical range, from the eighteenth to twenty-first centuries, and honor Professor Champa's own scholarly rigor, methodological diversity, and intellectual breadth through topics ranging from art history to cultural studies."--Jacket

Book excerpt: Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards's bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now, much as artists progress from drawing to painting, Edwards moves from black-and-white into color. This much-awaited new guide distills the enormous existing knowledge about color theory into a practical method of working with color to produce harmonious combinations. Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive color workshops, Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see color, how to use it, and-for those involved in art, painting, or design-how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 color images and exercises that move from simple to challenging, this volume explains how to: see what is really there rather than what you "know" in your mind about colored objects perceive how light affects color, and how colors affect one another manipulate hue, value, and intensity of color and transform colors into their opposites balance color in still-life, landscape, figure, and portrait painting understand the psychology of color harmonize color in your surroundings While we recognize and treasure the beautiful use of color, reproducing what we see can be a challenge. Accessibly unweaving color's complexity, this must-have primer is destined to be an instant classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 2126, scientists Arcot and Morey chase a sky pirate—and invent the technology to travel through space. In the second story, the heroes travel to Venus and make first contact with an alien species. Finally, they must defend the solar system from invaders whose own star has long since gone dark. Originally published separately as “Piracy Preferred” in Amazing Stories June 1930 edition, “Solarite” in Amazing Stories November 1930, and “The Black Star Passes” in Amazing Stories Quarterly Fall 1930, these three novellas were edited and collected into this volume in 1953. This is the first book in John W. Campbell’s Arcot, Morey, and Wade trilogy. Most famous for editing Astounding Science Fiction and Fact magazine and introducing Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and many other great science fiction authors to the world, Campbell’s other notable works include the novella “Who Goes There?”, which was adapted to film as The Thing by John Carpenter in 1982. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION These stories were written nearly a quarter of a century ago, for the oldAmazing Stories magazine. The essence of any magazine is not its name, but its philosophy, its purpose. That old Amazing Stories is long since gone; the magazine of the same name today is as different as the times today are different from the world of 1930. Science-fiction was new, in 1930; atomic energy was a dream we believed in, and space-travel was something we tried to understand better. Today, science-fiction has become a broad field, atomic energy—despite the feelings of many present adults!—is no dream. (Nor is it a nightmare; it is simply a fact, and calling it a nightmare is another form of effort to push it out of reality.) In 1930, the only audience for science-fiction was among those who were still young enough in spirit to be willing to hope and speculate on a new and wider future—and in 1930 that meant almost nothing but teen-agers. It meant the brightest group of teen-agers, youngsters who were willing toplay with ideas and understandings of physics and chemistry and astronomy that most of their contemporaries considered “too hard work.” I grew up with that group; the stories I wrote over the years, and, later, the stories I bought for Astounding Science Fiction changed and grew more mature too. Astounding Science Fiction today has many of the audience that read those early stories; they're not high school and college students any more, of course, but professional engineers, technologists and researchers now. Naturally, for them we need a totally different kind of story. In growing with them, I and my work had to lose much of the enthusiastic scope that went with the earlier science fiction.
