Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Colonial Homes One end which I proposed to myself in this book, besides presenting house and home historically, was to gather up as many distinct types Of the colonial architecture of New England as pos sible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation, as it seems to me nothing could give half so clear a picture of a century and a half of colonial life. It was this idea alone which could give cohesion to a series of sketches having little connection in themselves, except as recording fragments of history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of them were written some years ago for Appleton'sjoumml; but by the addition of several new subjects, besides re-writing the old ones, the collection bears out, I think, the idea conveyed by the title of our colonial homes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old New England Houses New England colonists were not of a class content to live in so rude a manner. Lumber, both hand sawed and mill-sawed, was produced soon after their arrival. The earliest mill of which I find record was erected in the vicinity of Portsmouth in 1631 by a man named Gibbons. But the output of the little mills of the early days was limited in quan tity, and a number of generations passed before the log hut disappeared. As the pioneers pushed their way, year after year, into the interior, northward and westward, they built in western Massachusetts, in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, log cabins such as were built in an earlier day in the coast settlements and along the valleys of the larger rivers. For them, as for the first settlers, shelter was a re quirement second only to food, and the readiest means of meeting the necessity was the cutting, hewing, and piling of logs from the surrounding forest. Even after the operation of sawmills, much of the heavier framing timber was hewn from logs. This is often revealed when the old houses are torn down or altered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them IN the following pages the plan pursued in the first volume of Some Colonial Homes and those who lived in them, has been closely followed, the only deviation being the introduction of homes of national fame, as Mount Vernon and Monticello. The great interest attaching to these is, perhaps, a sufficient apology for turning for a moment from the humbler to the greater folk, and for introducing, in one instance - that of Monticello - a resi dence finished only some years subsequent to that period at which all things Colonial are supposed to terminate. The reader, however, will find many examples of several periods of earlier architecture, and all such houses have a story worth the telling. There is, indeed, scarcely a house standing now, built during Colonial days, that is not, in one way or another intimately connected with some person, the actor in an important event in the history of our country. We should all see these houses, or if we cannot see them, we should know them as some of them are made known to us in this book. Our land is a better land for having them within its borders, and we will be better citizens for an acquaintance with them. The day on which I went to Monticello was beautiful, yet, save my companion, no one else was there. I wonder how many of the politicians who, with the vox humana stop pulled out, acclaim the name of Jefferson as founder of the Democratic Party, have made the short pilgrimage from Washington to Charlottesville to visit the house he lived in and the grave where he is buried. In the brief period since white men first made their homes within sight of the Green Mountains, their lives have been menaced by savages, their lands coveted by robbers clothed with law and power, their families driven forth in terror when invading armies came among them, while the decisive battles of three great wars were fought on the lake of their glowing sunsets. Their State was the first ad mitted to the Union, after a forty years' struggle for its rights which happily has had no parallel in this country. Iand when, years later, slavery was crushed and the Union saved in the cruel war whose wounds time has not yet healed, no soldiers of the North won so great glory or paid for it so heavy a price in suffering and in loss as did the grandsons of the Green Mountain Boys. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homes of Our Forefathers: Being a Selection of the Oldest and Most Interesting Historical Houses and Noted Places in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont; From Original Drawings Taken on the Spot After innumerable trials and difficulties, the full history of which would fill fifty of these pages, I have at length completed the third volume of Homes of Our Forefathers. Nearly seven years have passed away since I commenced the work. Very few persons can have any adequate idea of the time, labor and expense required to collect the materials and superintend the getting up of these books. The many weary miles I have travelled to ascertain the correct dates or the names of those who built these houses; hunting up old wills in the Probate Court; examining old deeds in the Registrar's Office; visit ing graveyards, to decipher, if possible, the date of some person's death; calling on Mr. A, B, and C, and trying to reconcile the different and often contradictory st0ries they would tell me, etc., etc., are a few of the labors incident to this undertaking. That in spite of all my efforts to be absolutely correct, there may be found some trifling errors; that some of the drawings may be slightly inaccurate in unimportant details, I am quite willing to admit, but this will surely be pardoned, for, perhaps when I was making the sketches, rain or snow was falling on my paper, or the wind was blowing a gale, and making it extremely difficult to sketch at all. And this reminds me of a question I have often been asked, and that is, why I did not take photographs of these houses. I answer that very seldom would this process have been desirable, because in very many cases, alterations and additions have been made at various times to these buildings, which I have left out, and shown them as they were originally. Then again, frequently trees hid important features of course in sketching I could leave these trees out partially or wholly. I will now say a few words in regard to the financial part of this undertaking. From first to last I have been obliged to bear the whole expense, as I could not induce any society or individual to invest money in the enterprise. That this has been a pretty heavy burden will be evident from the following statement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Desirable Farms and Summer Homes in Vermont Vermont has, too, a reasonable pride in the fact that the bus iness depression of the past two years has touched its people so lightly. No National or Savings Bank has closed its doors; no depositor suffered loss. None of its industries have sus pended operations, but new ones constantly added. No strikes or idle workmen, but plenty of profitable employment at reason able prices. Surrounded by these numerous favorable conditions, it in vites people to its unoccupied homes - to utilize its unused water power in manufactures, and to the hospitality of its Summer Homes.
