Unique Because... "This is the amazing life story of a remarkable man, who despite the loss of one eye in battle still rose to the rank of Colonel in the Indian Army before becoming totally blinded with the loss of his second eye. His story is told against the historic backdrop of the partition of India, the creation of Pakistan, the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971 that created new countries out of pre-independence India. Colonel Virendra Swarup, fondly known as Viru to his friends and family, won the Wound Medal (equivalent to the US Purple Heart), commanded two saber squadrons of most famous regiment the Poona Horse (17th Queen Victorias Own Cavalry) and the Roaring Fours (The Forty-Four Armored Regiment), and witnessed the creation of a new world. His is a poignant and courageous story and a celebration of life. This is not just a book for those interested in military history, the history of India and of the British role abroad but for anyone who applauds survival against the odds."--- Melissa Lumley London, UK "First, let me say what an incredible life youve led. Sounds like a blockbuster movie with love, tragedy, war, passion, and overcoming obstacles. Encouraging indeed... Debbie USA I am excited by your book; you have a natural talent for telling a story and you have many to tell in here. Ed Munson Canada "This is the story of a down-to-earth soldier of the Indian Army, who on learning of the outbreak of war, cuts short his leave and hotfoots it to join his regiment; barely escaping death in action loses an eye; attains professional competence to command an armored regiment; while still in service loses his second eye. How with a never-say-die attitude, he tackled lifes problems and even indulged in playing golf. He traveled all over the world and finally reached the US; his exposure to the American way of life is interesting. - Worth reading by active and enterprising persons." Download or read book Wayfare of a Soldier written by Madhur Goyal and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military literature is packed with jottings of service officers who get bloodied in battle – those who lead, perform and sometimes die, to bring victory and glory to their regiment and the country. This book is a complex amalgam of military musings over the past 37 years and pieced together with some storyline adhesive of the first-hand account of a frontline combat soldier, Colonel Madhur Goyal, SM, who led his men into “glacial warfare” and numerous “counter-terrorist operations.” He says, “There were abundant occasions when there was no reason for me to come out alive.” The officer was suitably awarded for indomitable courage and conspicuous bravery with a Gallantry award. This autobiographical account will delight the readers with its anecdotal content and a huge amount of information contained in it, which even mirrors the military journey of every Indian Army officer. A must-read for youngsters who aspire to join the forces, for military spouses to get an insight into their husbands’ life and for young girls to passionately lookout for a future companion in military uniform. Wayfare of a Soldier is like a symphony played by an orchestra with many artists and with Madhur as the protagonist.

Book excerpt: This is the heart-warming story of a backward boy coming from a dysfunctional family and a broken home. Unable to talk at age four, he was sent to a boarding school to learn to speak. Branded a moron and dragged through ten schools in seven years, he suddenly "finds his feet" and becomes dux of one of India's most prestigious colleges. Later he becomes an officer in one of the Indian Army's most famous regiments and Adjutant of its premier battalion. Laugh at his misfortunes and exult in his successes. At age four he barely escapes a kidnap attempt, he travels to boarding school on the world's most famous railway, Darjeeling's toy train, which was once chased by a wild elephant. Accompany the author as he goes to catch a monkey and shoot a panther, and as his Brigade confronts the Russians over possession of the Iranian oilfields; and he reads fairy tales to a blood-thirsty Pathan warrior who asks if the stories are true! Feel the desperation of millions as murder and mayhem stalk the Indian sub-continent. See the refugee trains, ushered in by the granting of independence to India in 1947 when inter-communal violence spawned ten million refugees overnight and one million hapless men, women and children were slaughtered.

Book Synopsis Class and Race in the Frontier Army by : Kevin Adams
Download or read book Class and Race in the Frontier Army written by Kevin Adams and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have long assumed that ethnic and racial divisions in post–Civil War America were reflected in the U.S. Army, of whose enlistees 40 percent were foreign-born. Now Kevin Adams shows that the frontier army was characterized by a “Victorian class divide” that overshadowed ethnic prejudices. Class and Race in the Frontier Army marks the first application of recent research on class, race, and ethnicity to the social and cultural history of military life on the western frontier. Adams draws on a wealth of military records and soldiers’ diaries and letters to reconstruct everyday army life—from work and leisure to consumption, intellectual pursuits, and political activity—and shows that an inflexible class barrier stood between officers and enlisted men. As Adams relates, officers lived in relative opulence while enlistees suffered poverty, neglect, and abuse. Although racism was ingrained in official policy and informal behavior, no similar prejudice colored the experience of soldiers who were immigrants. Officers and enlisted men paid much less attention to ethnic differences than to social class—officers flaunting and protecting their status, enlisted men seething with class resentment. Treating the army as a laboratory to better understand American society in the Gilded Age, Adams suggests that military attitudes mirrored civilian life in that era—with enlisted men, especially, illustrating the emerging class-consciousness among the working poor. Class and Race in the Frontier Army offers fresh insight into the interplay of class, race, and ethnicity in late-nineteenth-century America.
Book Synopsis The View from Officers' Row by : Sherry L. Smith
Download or read book The View from Officers' Row written by Sherry L. Smith and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Choice Outstanding Academic Title Capturing military men in contemplation rather than combat, Sherry L. Smith reveals American army officers' views about the Indians against whom they fought in the last half of the nineteenth century. She demonstrates that these officers—and their wives—did not share a monolithic, negative view of their enemies, but instead often developed a great respect for Indians and their cultures. Some officers even came to question Indian policy, expressed misgivings about their personal involvement in the Indian Wars, and openly sympathized with their foe. The book reviews the period 1848–1890—from the acquisition of the Mexican Cession to the Battle of Wounded Knee—and encompasses the entire trans-Mississippi West. Resting primarily on personal documents drawn from a representative sample of the officer corps at all levels, the study seeks to juxtapose the opinions of high-ranking officers with those of officers of lesser prominence, who were perhaps less inclined to express personal opinions in official reports. No educated segment of American society had more prolonged contact with Indians than did army officers and their wives, yet not until now has such an overview of their attitudes been presented. Smith's work demolishes the stereotype of the Indian-hating officer and broadens our understanding of the role of the army in the American West.

There are many stories of courageous heroes at the borders, but how much do we know about the women standing strong behind them? The Force behind the Forces is a collection of seven true stories of eternal love, courage and sacrifice. Written by an army wife, Swapnil Pandey, this book brings to light moving stories of unimaginable valour in the face of broken dreams, lost hopes and shattered families. It proves that bullets and bombs can only pierce the bodies of our soldiers, for their stories will live on in the hearts of these brave women forever, women who have dedicated their lives to the nation, without even a uniform to call their own.
