Book Synopsis Regulation of Transcription and Translation in Eukaryotes by : Ekkehard K.F. Bautz
Download or read book Regulation of Transcription and Translation in Eukaryotes written by Ekkehard K.F. Bautz and published by Springer. This book was released on 1973-12-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the 24th Mos bach Colloquium on "Regulation of Transcription and Trans lation in Eukaryotes" which was held April 26-28, 1973, in Mosbach, Germany, under the auspices of the Gesellschaft fiir Biologische Chemie. To the three of us (H. KERSTEN, P. KARLSON and myself) who were commissioned with the invitation of speakers, it was a difficult decision as to whether we should attempt to cover with some twenty contributions as many aspects of this broad topic as possible, or to sacrifice the intellectually perhaps more pleasing but more specula tive concepts and to concentrate on a few aspects of gene expression in reasonable detail. We unanimously decided on the latter course, leaving such important and timely topics as for example, hormone action, cyclic AMP and reverse transcription to the proceedings of other symposia, and con centrating on the four questions which are most basic to an understanding of the mechanisms of transcription and trans lation and for which fragmentary but nonetheless reliable experimental results have become available within the last few years. These are the structure of chromatin, the syn thesis of messenger RNA, the structure of the active ribo some, and the role of initiation factors in protein synthesis.
Book Synopsis The Cytoskeleton by : Brigitte M. Jockusch
Download or read book The Cytoskeleton written by Brigitte M. Jockusch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 45th Mosbach Colloquium of the German Society for Biological Chemistry (GBCh). The 1994 meeting was the first in this series devoted to the cytoskeleton. This complex system enables the eukaryotic cell to form discrete contacts with neighboring cells and the extracellular matrix, to differentiate, to move, change shape, transport organelles, and proliferate. These diverse tasks are performed by three distinct fibrillar networks: microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments, which are composed of structural and regulatory elements. The precise interplay between the components in time and space determines which of the various functions is performed. The rapid progress made in this field is best exemplified by the recent unraveling of the molecular mechanism of intracellular movement. Here, the modem microscopies of today allow the motility to be visualized in realtime. Molecular biology has dissected the functional domains of the motor proteins involved and provided material required for biochemical studies as well as structure analysis by X-ray diffraction and NMR. Thus, it is now possible to integrate cellular behavior and molecular structure in a unifying picture. Other recent advances in the field point to the role of cytoskeletol proteins in human diseases, from allergies to skin blistering, atrophies, and Alzheimers's disease. The book is an up-to-date account of the field told by an international set of experts, a broad introduction to newcomers, and a valuable reference for practitioners. January 1995 Brigitte M.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this years' ~osbach Colloquium was DNA integration. We have tried to bring together experts from different fields of research who are studying natural processes by which DNA molecules from differ ent sources are linked. It has been known for a long time that such linkage occurs between the chromosomes of bacteriophages and plasmids on the one hand and the chromosome of the bacterial host on the other. This process has been especially well studied in bacteriophage A. Since it is controlled in a complicated way, we began with a lecture by M. ptashne on these regulatory processes. H. Nash described the inte gration of bacteriophage A into the bacterial chromosome. To put this site-specific process into perspective, G. Mosig lectured on genetic recombination in prokaryotes in general and K. Murray described the use of bacteriophage A as an artificial vector for genetic engineering. A different kind of bacteriophage integration is shown by bacteriophage Mu, which is much less specific in its choice of an integration site than A. The properties of this phage were described by P. van de Putte.

Download or read book Inhibitors Tools in Cell Research written by Theodor Bücher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of the 20th Mosbach Colloquium may be best illustrated by the following notes sent to the speakers when the colloquium was organized. "1) The application of inhibitors in cell biology has led to decisive insight into the organisation of cellular units. The subject should be treated against a background of current aspects of cell biology. In some areas of research, a fairly complete picture of the functions and cooperative interactions of the units has already emerged. We will discuss mainly these areas. 2) At this colloquium we want to contribute illustrations of the useful application of inhibitors to biological problems. Due to limited knowledge, inhibitors are sometimes incorrectly employed. This applies both to the planning of investigations and to the con· clusions drawn ("use of inhibitors by uninhibited workers"). 3) Inhibitors themselves are interesting substances and their mechanisms of action constitute fascinating problems." The colloquium has been subdivided into five sections. The known chemical structures of the inhibitors discussed are given in an Appendix. We gratefully appreciate the cooperation of the speakers. To a great extent, they managed the coordination of contributions to each of the five subdivisions. We regret that no contributors from Eastern Europe were able to participate.
Book Synopsis Glyco-and Cellbiology by : Felix Wieland
Download or read book Glyco-and Cellbiology written by Felix Wieland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the biological role of the diverse oligosaccharides of glycoproteins and glycolipids has been a major challenge in cell biology. Glycosylation is an essential step during molecular recognition and is involved in protein folding, sorting, targeting and intracellular translocation. Further, glycoproteins of the cell membrane play a major role in cell adhesion, hormone function, antibody action and signal mediation. Current knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in these processes is presented.
