This book was released on 2009 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interfacial forces that dictate colloid stability in aqueous and non-aqueous systems are a function of the polar and apolar properties of the medium. This study quantifies these colloidal forces and energies between a glass microsphere and a glass surface in water and n-decane solutions using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). These solutions were amended systematically to identify the magnitudes of various contributing forces in aqueous and non-aqueous systems. For comparison, classical DLVO and Extended-DLVO (XDLVO) theory were used to calculate the free energy of interaction for each system. Long-range repulsive forces were measured in aqueous solutions and were generally predicted by DLVO theory. Small repulsive forces were measured in non-aqueous solutions at close separation distances (

Book excerpt: The main objective of this volume is to demonstrate the importance of the fundamental aspects of interfacial phenomena in various industrial applications. The text provides the reader with the knowledge that is essential for the composition of the complex multi-phase systems used in the above mentioned areas of application. It should enable the physical and formulation chemist as well as the chemical engineer in designing the formulation on the basis of a rational approach. It will also enable the formulation scientist to better understanding the factors responsible for producing a stable product with optimum application conditions. The book should also be very useful for teaching the subject of formulation at academic institutions.

Book excerpt: Compiled to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Faraday Society in 1903, this collection presents some of the key papers published in Faraday journals over the past one hundred years. The feature articles were all written by leaders in their field, including a number of Nobel Prize winners such as Lord George Porter and John Pople, and cover a breadth of topics demonstrating the wide range of scientific fields which the Faraday Society, and now the RSC Faraday Division, seek to promote. Topics include: Intermolecular Forces; Ultrafast Processes; Astrophysical Chemistry; Polymers; and Electrochemistry. Each article is accompanied by a commentary which puts it in context, describes its influence and shows how the field has developed since its publication. 100 Years of Physical Chemistry: A Collection of Landmark Papers will be welcomed by anyone interested in the historical development of physical chemistry, and will be a valued addition to any library shelf.

Book excerpt: Colloid and Surface Science records the plenary and main lectures of the International Conference on Colloid and Surface Science, held in Budapest Hungary in September 1975. The conference discusses such topics as main factors affecting the stability of colloids; the thermodynamics of adsorption excess quantities; pore structure of solids; the effect of adsorption on the interaction between solid particles; colloid and surface chemical aspects of mesophases; and the measurement of surface tension by exact methods. Physicists and chemists specializing in colloids and surface tension will find the book very insightful.
