Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Gas Phase is adapted from a set of lecture notes for a core first year lecture course in physical chemistry taught at the University of Oxford. The book is intended to give a relatively concise introduction to the gas phase at a level suitable for any undergraduate scientist. After defining the gas phase, properties of gases such as temperature, pressure, and volume are discussed. The relationships between these properties are explained at a molecular level, and simple models are introduced that allow the various gas laws to be derived from first principles. Finally, the collisional behavior of gases is used to explain a number of gas-phase phenomena, such as effusion, diffusion, and thermal conductivity.

Book excerpt: Measurements have been made of the total radiation intensity from free jets of carbon dioxide and carbon that were excited in the source by a corona discharge. The radiation per molecule, obtained from the ratio of total intensity to source density, increases sharply when source temperature and pressure are such as the produce clustering in a jet of unexcited gas. We believe this enhancement may be due to interaction between aligned dipoles in adjacent cluster molecules. Measurements of the terminal rotational temperature of carbon monoxide and CO2, both pure in admixture with each other and/or argon indicate that CO always relaxes more slowly. There is no evidence of coupling between the rotational modes of the two species. Keywords: Gas dynamics, Infrared spectrometry, Rotational relaxation, Super-radiance, Collisions, Phase studies vapor phases. (aw).

Book excerpt: Astrochemistry, the study of chemistry in space, is a rapidly growing field in astrophysics. Molecules are found everywhere; from our solar system to high-redshift galaxies. Gas-Phase Chemistry in Space: From elementary particles to complex organic molecules addresses the physics and chemistry of astrophysical molecules with a focus on gas-phase processes. Edited by François Lique and Alexandre Faure, alongside a collection of experts in the field, this book introduces essential concepts that govern the formation, excitation and destruction of molecules at postgraduate and research levels. A broad range of topics are covered, including early universe chemistry and stellar nucleosynthesis, and the study of bimolecular reaction kinetics. Detailed descriptions of the gas-phase process are provided and recent examples of the interplay between observational and laboratory astrophysics are examined. Coinciding with the timely arrival of powerful new telescopes, this work examines numerous advances in astrochemistry and paves the way for these advances to be implemented in the future. More than 100 figures are used, alongside examples, providing both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the excitation and ionization of atmospheric gases has become an area of intense research. A large amount of data have been accumulated concerning the various elementary processes which occur when photons, electrons and ions collide with atoms and molecules. This scattered information has now been collected in a handbook for the first time, and the authors give a critical analysis of relevant data. This book is a comprehensive and detailed study of the available information and is distinguished by the following outstanding features: the consideration of a large number of atmospheric constituents, including H^O2, H, N^O2, N, O^O2, O, CO, CO^O2, H^O2O, HCl and some hydrocarbons the maximum number of space particles, including magnetospheric particles, are considered as projectiles: photons, electrons, hydrogen atoms, protons and helium ionsthe energy range under study corresponds to the real spectrum of cosmic fluxes, from threshold values for elementary processes up to several thousand keV the recommended values of cross sections, obtained from analysis of the available experimental data, are given in the handbook and their accuracy is estimated. These features make the handbook particularly valuable to specialists in the aeronomy of planets, comets and active perturbations, as well as to experimentalists and theoreticians working in the fields of plasma physics, atomic and molecular physics, physics of the upper atmosphere, chemical physics, optics and spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetic Processes in Gases and Plasmas provides a survey of studies on transport and chemical kinetic processes in high temperature gases and plasmas. The book is concerned with conditions produced by the interaction of an object with the atmosphere at hypersonic velocities. The text also provides a foundation for the flow field equations which include chemical reactions and other transport processes, and to present in some detail the microscopic considerations underlying these calculations. Chapters are devoted to the discussion of topics such as the molecular theory of transport equations; transport processes in ionized gases; and inelastic energy transfer processes and chemical kinetics. Aerospace engineers, physicists, chemists, and astrophysicists will find the book a good reference material.
