Book excerpt: " Fast-beam collinear laser spectroscopy experiments on the exotic rubidium and gallium isotopes have been performed at the ISAC radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF. The neutron-rich rubidium isotope chain up to N=61 is investigated. Specifically, the neutron-rich 98Rb isotope has been studied for the investigation of shape coexistence. Two long-lived nuclear states in 98Rb have been clearly observed for the first time: a low-spin state, assigned a spin of I = 0, and a high-spin state. The high-spin state is tentatively assigned a spin of I = 3 based on this work in combination with gamma decay results. There is no eviedence of deviations from the behavior of the changes in the charge radii. The hyperfine structure of the neutron-rich 99Rb was observed. Both suggested spins I = 5/2 and I = 3/2 were based on both experimental results of the stable isotopes 85Rb and 87Rb. Neither spins can be rulled out. The neutron-deficient gallium isotopes down to N=32 have been measured via laser spectroscopy. Their hyperfine structures and isotope shifts are reported in this work. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of 65Ga and 67Ga were measured for the first time, and were for 65Ga : = +1:758(5)N and Qs = +0:226(14)b respectively. For 67Ga the measured moments were = +1:849(5)N and Qs =+0:207(13)b. Analysis of the trend in the neutron-deficient charge radii illustrate that there is no evidence for deformations from the behaviour in the gallium in the N = 32 region. With regard to the observed 62Ga, its isotope shift and its chargeradius could not be determined but were narrowed down, due to the low yield of this isotope. A motivated discussion for a future investigation on 62Ga is included. These measurements have been carried out along with the developments of new laser techniques: laser chopping and switching. These techniques were developed by the collinear laser spectroscopy group at TRIUMF to which the author contributed." --

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the application of the collinear resonance laser spectroscopy to sensitively measure the electromagnetic nuclear observables of the neutron-rich indium isotopes 115-131In. This entailed a systematic study of the efficiency of resonant ionization schemes to extract the hyperfine structure of the isotopes, the atomic charge exchange process and benchmarking of modern atomic calculations with a laser ablation ion source. This allowed determination of the root-mean-square nuclear charge radii, nuclear magnetic dipole moments, nuclear electric quadrupole moments and nuclear spins of the 113-131In isotopes with high accuracy. With a proton hole in the Z = 50 nuclear shell closure of tin and several nuclear isomer states, these measurements of the indium (Z = 49) isotope chain provided an efficient probe of the evolution of nuclear structure properties towards and at the doubly-magic nuclear shell closure of 132Sn (N = 82) - revealing unpredicted changes.

The unique possibility to extract nuclear properties like spins, radii and nuclear moments in a model-independent manner leads to important physics results to test the predictive power of existing nuclear models. rnThis work presents the construction and the commissioning of a new collinear laser spectroscopy experiment TRIGA-LASER as a part of the TRIGA-SPEC facility at the TRIGA research reactor at the University of Mainz. The goal of the experiment is to study the nuclear structure of radioactive isotopes which will be produced by neutron-induced fission near the reactor core and transported to an ion source by a gas jet system. rnThe versatility of the collinear laser spectroscopy technique will be exploited in the second part of this thesis. The nuclear spin and the magnetic moment of the neutron-deficient isotope Mg-21 will be presented, which were measured by the detection of the beta-decay asymmetry induced by nuclear polarization after optical pumping. A combination of this detection method with the classical fluorescence detection is then used to determine the isotope shifts of the neutron-rich magnesium isotopes from Mg-24 through Mg-32 to study the transition to the ''island of inversion''.

Updated changes in mean square charge radii values across the chain are computed using the latest atomic factors for the rubidium D2 line and their trends with resect to nuclear deformation discussed. Equally the existence of a long lived isomeric state at N=61 is confirmed. A low spin state is assigned a spin of I=0 and a high spin state is tentatively assigned a spin of I=3 based on this analysis and gamma decay results. These measurements have been carried out in conjunction with the development of a laser frequency locking program and the characterization of the confocal Fabry Perot etalon employed by the CFBS group. This program guarantees the stability of the laser frequency to a dither of 2MHz during laser spectroscopy experiments, therefore reducing the errors associated to the measurements of hyperfine structure and isotope shift undertaken by the CFBS group." --

It also presents the methods and results of an investigation into isotope shifts in the mercury isotopic chain. These Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) developments are detailed, together with an RILIS ionization scheme that allowed laser ionized ion beams of chromium, germanium, radium and tellurium to be generated at the Isotope Mass Separator On-Line (ISOLDE) facility. A combination of laser spectroscopy with decay spectroscopy and mass spectrometry unambiguously demonstrated a cessation of the extreme shape staggering first observed in the 1970s and revealed the characteristic kink at the crossing of the N=126 shell closure. A series of RILIS developments were required to facilitate this experiment, including mercury “ionization scheme” development and the coupling of the RILIS with an arc discharge ion source. Laser spectroscopy has since become a powerful tool for nuclear physics and the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS), of the ISOLDE facility at CERN, is a prime example. Highlighting important advances in this field, the thesis offers a unique and revealing resource.

The laser-based method for zirconium isotope separation is known as atomic vapour laser isotope separation (AVLIS). This report identifies a considerable improvement in proposed schemes for isotopic depletion of zirconium-91 based upon the AVLIS method.

The conference was organized by the Department of Physics and the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla with support from the Physics Departments of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. This conference, Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses has now gained the status of a major nuclear physics serial conference. The previous conference was held in Bellaire, Michigan, USA. The conference was first held in 1967 in Lysekil, Sweden, then entitled Conference on Nuclei Far from Stability. ENAM2001 welcomed 270 participants from 34 countries, including 17 accompanying per sons. The content of the program was selected based on the advice of the International Advisory Committee. The Committee members read and considered 253 submitted abstracts in selecting oral contributions. During the conference week 76 invited and oral talks were given. The rest of the contributions were presented in dedicated poster sessions. Many thanks go to the speakers of oral and poster presentations for their enthusiasm and for the high quality of their work which demonstrated the liveliness of the field. Participation in the lectures was high and contributions from the audience were important towards the success of this conference. The organizers would like to especially thank Cary Davids of Argonne National Laboratory for his comprehensive summary talk, which is also included in these Proceedings.

Employing the method of collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy, the nuclear ground state spin, hyperfine moments and charge radii can be determined. The laser spectroscopy group at TRIUMF has used this method to investigate the properties of rubidium isotopes, where 76-98 Rb had been previously studied at ISOLDE by Thibault et al. Laser spectroscopy was performed at TRIUMF on both the neutron deficient 74-76 Rb, providing insight into the behaviour leading up to the proton drip line. On the neutron rich end, a programme is in place to extend measurements into the highly deformed 98-100 Rb. Preliminary measurements of the spectra of the spin-0 isotope 92 Rb have been carried out, on beams with intensities of 10 7 per second, representing the first time heavy rubidiums have been produced and studied spectroscopically at TRIUMF. These measurements have been carried out in conjunction with the implementation of a new MCS based data acquisition system, greatly improving the data collection and analysis capabilities of the laser spectroscopy group." --
