Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Introduction: The female athlete triad is characterized by disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density (BMD). The triad affects many active females and can lead to long-term health problems if left untreated. Because collegiate athletes are especially susceptible to the triad, it is recommended that collegiate coaches be aware of prevention strategies, risk factors, symptoms, health consequences, and treatment procedures associated with the triad. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge that NCAA Division II head coaches of female sports (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball) have regarding the female athlete triad. Methods: A 27-item survey was administered through an online survey service to all NCAA Division II head coaches of the most highly sponsored female sports. The survey included 15 statements about the triad to be characterized as either true of false. Coaches earned one point for each statement that was correctly identified as true or false to determine their knowledge score on a 15-point scale. The knowledge scores were compared by coaches' sex (male, female), sport type (lean, non-lean, both), and experience (limited, moderate, considerable). A 2 x 3 x 3 ANOVA was used to analyze these independent variables. Results: General knowledge of the triad among coaches appeared to be at a high level, but knowledge of its signs and symptoms was limited. Male and female coaches had similar knowledge scores. Coaches of lean sports had significantly higher knowledge scores than coaches of non-lean sports. Coaches with moderate experience had significantly greater knowledge scores that inexperienced coaches. Discussion and Conclusion: Regular, detailed education for coaches on the triad with an emphasis on recognizing symptoms is recommended. To ensure full comprehension, coaches should also be tested regularly on relevant material"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "A condition unique to female athletes is the Female Athlete Triad, which can present as: (1) low energy availability (EA) or energy deficiency, to clinical eating disorders; (2) subclinical menstrual dysfunction or deficiencies to functional hypothalamic amenorrhea; and (3) low bone mineral density (BMD) or osteopenia to frank osteoporosis (De Souza et al., 2014; Javed et al., 2013; Loucks, Stachenfeld, & DiPietro, 2006; Nattiv et al., 2007). The likelihood of athletes presenting the full Triad simultaneously is only 1-16%, but the percentages of presenting with one (16-60%) or more (3-27%) of the components are considerably greater (De Souza, Koltun, Etter, & Southmayd, 2017; Gibbs, Williams, & De Souza, 2013). Current research regarding high school coaches has found only 2-14% of responding coaches could name all three components of the Female Athlete Triad (Triad) - low energy availability, low bone mineral density, and menstrual dysfunction (Brown et al., 2014; Mukherjee et al., 2016; Pantano, 2017; Troy et al., 2006). At present time, few studies investigating the reasons for this lack of Triad knowledge have been published. My primary objective was to identify Triad knowledge levels in NC high school coaches of female athletes, along with secondary objectives of identifying if Triad knowledge levels were associated with the gender or formal training of the coach. The survey used in this study was the exact same survey used for a previous study of collegiate coaches (Frideres, 2016). The questions were input into an online survey format using Qualtrics software. Participants were recruited via an email which included an anonymous link to the survey. Responses were collected from 137 current North Carolina high school coaches of female athletes, 96 of whom completed every knowledge question - 62 males (65%) and 34 females (35%). Twenty-five percent of the 137 responding coaches correctly identified the three components of the Triad, and of the 96 who completed all questions, the average score was 67% correct. Female coaches (72% correct) scored significantly higher than male coaches (64% correct) on the entire survey (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of its kind to focus solely on the female athlete triad - its origins, its recognition, and most importantly, its management. Since the symptoms themselves cover a range of medical specialties, chapters are written by experts in a number of relevant fields - sports medicine, orthopedics, endocrinology, and pediatrics - with an eye toward overall care of the young female athlete. Additionally, each chapter includes suggestions on how to educate and communicate with young athletes and their parents, as well as trainers and coaches, on how to manage the illness outside of the direct clinical setting. The female athlete triad is often seen in sports where low body weight is emphasized, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and running, though it can appear in any sport or activity. The interrelated symptoms - eating disorders, amenorrhea, and low bone mass - exist on a spectrum of severity and are serious and potentially life-threatening if not properly treated. Psychological problems, in addition to medical ones, are not uncommon. The Female Athlete Triad: A Clinical Guide discusses all of these areas for a well-rounded and in-depth approach to the phenomenon and will be a useful reference for any clinician working with female athletes across the lifespan.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this directed project was to develop an educational seminar for incoming college female athletes, college coaches, athletic directors, trainers, weight coaches and parents on the female athlete triad syndrome. The goals of this program were to (a) create an educational seminar to increase knowledge about the triad and how to prevent female athletes from developing it, and (b) to provide information on how to address the female athlete triad once developed. The educational seminar consists of two segments: the first being open to all athletes, family members and athletic personnel of the school with the goal of increasing education of the triad as well as raising awareness, and the second segment held amongst each team individually without the presence of family members or athletic personnel for a more private setting. An expert-review panel assessed the education seminar materials, evaluated the content and layout and provided feedback. Formative evaluation review forms for the educational seminar materials were created to assess the efficacy and value of the program.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The Female Athlete Triad is a syndrome defined by disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis seen in female athletes. This directed project presented the assessment of knowledge and the importance of education among female athletes regarding the Female Athlete Triad. The researcher worked with the athletic department and the female athletes at California State University, Long Beach. A quantitative study, quasi-experimental, one-group design was completed. A one-group pretest-posttest was used on 45 female athletes to evaluate their knowledge base before and after the educational intervention. Results indicated a significant increase in the athletes' scores for knowledge of the Female Athlete Triad between the pretest and posttest (p

Book excerpt: High school coaches play a huge role in establishing a healthy environment for their athletes and often students. The coach-athlete relationship has proven to be a strong and useful bond in prevention of adverse behaviors of athletes or in prevention of health problems such as concussions. The female athlete triad (triad) is a common health problem among female athletes. Many high school coaches are unaware of the triad or the serious health and performance consequences for their athletes. The triad is a syndrome marked by 3 interrelated adverse effects: decreased energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and decreased bone mineral density. The Purpose of this study was to develop an online educational resource aimed at educating coaches about the triad. After the online education materials were created and reviewed by small panel groups, the materials were launched online and available to the public with the aim to target high school coaches. We collected online surveys from 90 participants including coaches and parents of high school female athletes and found a lack of knowledge, attitudes, and confidence in preventing the triad. By educating coaches and providing the tools for prevention, we hypothesize that coaches can play a large role in the prevention of the triad among high school athletes and help to keep our student athletes healthy and performing well in school and sports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research indicates that gender differences in anatomy and physiology, endocrinology, hand eye co-ordination and motor development have an effect on the kinds of injuries incurred as a result of sporting activities. Since men and women have different responses to exercise; strength and conditioning programs should be modified for these differences. Musculoskeletal Health in Women was born out of a need to provide fitness advice tailored to women. For example, research has focused on correcting neuromuscular imbalances in women to prevent injuries. Increased abduction moment at the knee and balance problems have been found to be predictors of ACL injury. Muscle strengthening with special emphasis on the terminal knee extensors and hip abductors can improve these neuromuscular imbalances. Additionally, taping and bracing at the ankle may be helpful, particularly in women prone to certain injuries. Any discussion of women’s sports injuries is only complete if it includes the Female Athlete Triad: energy availability (which is affected by eating disorders), osteoporosis, and menstrual function. Musculoskeletal Health in Women provides a fully-illustrated and comprehensive overview of all of these aspects and its multidisciplinary approach ensures that expertise is provided from disciplines such as psychiatry, physiatry, endocrinology, nutrition, rheumatology, orthopedics, physical therapy and radiology. These authors have worked with women athletes of all ilks and are well equipped to address a full spectrum of issues related to the musculoskeletal health of women. Musculoskeletal Health in Women will be of primary interest to women athletes and women embarking on a fitness regimen. Health professionals working in this area would also invariably benefit from the advice and guidance provided within these pages.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if an educational intervention for female collegiate athletes can improve knowledge of the female athlete triad. The participants of the study were 49 female collegiate athletes from Kent State University, an NCAA affiliated university. A Triad Knowledge Questionnaire (TKQ) was distributed to four teams during the first week of this study and again during the following week. After the first administration of the TKQ, one team received an educational presentation, one team an educational handout, one team received both the presentation and handout, and the final team served as the control with no educational intervention given. The TKQ was administered again the following week to determine if there was a difference in female athlete triad knowledge among the different intervention groups. The results of the study indicated there was a significant difference (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in many Westernized countries encounter a wider variety of career opportunities than afforded in previous decades, and the percentage of women leaders in nearly every sector is on the rise. Sport coaching, however, remains a domain where gender equity has declined or stalled, despite increasing female sport participation. The percentage of women who coach women are in the minority in most sports, and there is a near absence of women coaching men. This important new book examines why. Drawing on original multi-disciplinary research from across the globe, including first-hand accounts from practicing coaches, the book illuminates and examines the status of women in coaching, explores the complex issues they face in pursuing their careers, and suggests solutions for eliminating the barriers that impede women in coaching. Developing an innovative model of intersectionality and power constructs through which to guide research, the book covers issues including sexual identity, race, motherhood, cross-gender coaching and media coverage to give voice to women coaches from around the world. As such, Women in Sports Coaching is essential reading for serious students and scholars of sports coaching, sport sociology or anyone with an interest in gender and sport.

In this book, the authors draw on their extensive clinical experience to discuss how to identify, manage, treat, and prevent eating disorders in sport participants. They begin by examining the clinical conditions related to eating problems, including descriptions of specific disorders and a review of the relevant literature. Special attention is given to the specific gender and sport-related factors that can negatively influence the eating habits of athletes. The second half of the book discusses identification of participants with disordered eating by reviewing symptoms and how they manifest in sport; management issues for sport personnel, coaches, athletic trainers, and healthcare professionals; treatment; and medical considerations, such as the use of psychotropic medications. A list of useful resources is included in an appendix, as well as a glossary of important terms.
