Students have been concerned about their safety on campuses because of the crime and violence that have been occurring on college grounds and in surrounding areas. Some of these crimes include the following: rape, robbery, burglary, dating violence, stalking, sexual assault, and gun violence. Some examples of tragedies that have occurred on college grounds include the Virginia Tech tragedy and the rape of Jeanne Clery at Lehigh University. Lawmakers showed their concern of campus safety by creating and enforcing the Jeanne Clery Act. This research employed the use of a survey and face-to-face semi-structured interviews to determine East Carolina University students' perceptions of safety in campus in relation to crime and violence. The classes where the survey was distributed include ART 1910-Art Appreciation and ITEC 3292-Industrial Safety. The objective of this research work was to identify campus safety issues that were of concern to ECU students as well as students' perceptions of campus security services vis a vis the impact of its presence in the campus. It was understood from the results that students generally believe that ECU is a safe campus. Also, the survey and interview results show that few students use the campus security services. The results also show that females view the campus as less safe when compared to males. Freshmen view the campus as less safe when compared to upperclassmen.

Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Campus Crime shares with readers the advancements that have been made in understanding campus crime. Across the three sections of the book, chapters review changes while also addressing current – and even future – crime and security issues confronting institutions of higher education. Some of these chapters address long-standing topics such as the sexual victimization of college women and the role of campus police departments in securing IHEs. Other chapters address new issues in campus crime such as drugging victimization, concealed carrying of firearms on campus, and “technology-based” security issues such as the challenges posed by cybercriminals, as well as activities like cyberstalking and identity theft that involve campus community members both as victims and offenders. Although there are new topics and contributors to this edition, the previously covered chapters have been updated as well. The authors have brought together contributors who could provide both a current picture and critical analysis of issues concerning the legal, social, security, and policy contexts of campus crime. The chapters review topics at hand, offer substantive, critical analyses, thought-provoking discussion, and raise relevant policy issues, questions, and answers. This fourth edition combines seasoned campus crime experts with those relatively new to the study of campus crime who represent the next generation of scholars and practitioners in the field and bring with them the passion that comes with beginning to address what they see as the issues, explanations, solutions for, and responses to campus crime.

Book excerpt: The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) wrote, "The perception, just as much as the actual experience was what shaped women students fear for their campus safety" (p. 28), thus it will be the perceptions of the students that will shape their concerns of campus safety. This study will utilize unmatched count technique as the quantitative data collection method and a social constructivist framework to adapt to the sensitive and personal nature of campus safety issues, including sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data allowed the researcher to determine that students' perceptions could be categorized and defined in a number of ways. There is a clear need for further research on the subject in order to implement culturally appropriate and effective prevention, response and risk reduction strategies.

It pays particular attention to the factors that may give rise to crime, considering high-risk drinking and examining the intersection between hate crimes and violence. Devoting chapters to discrimination in all its forms, whether against international students, students of color, or on the basis of ethnicity or sexual orientation, it reviews the range of issues relating to harassment and violence against women and engages with hazing and the presence of guns on campus. The authors pay attention to the different circumstances that may apply in specific institutional types, such as community colleges and minority-serving institutions. They offer perspectives from administrators, campus security, student affairs personnel, faculty and policy makers. The purpose is to provide readers with the context and tools to devise a comprehensive safety plan. For administrators operating with few formal support systems, advice is given on how to co-opt individuals and resources from around the campus and the local community to assist in maintaining a safe and welcoming campus.Click here for press release.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was assessing the perceptions of student’s on how the campusclimate impacts their likelihood of reporting crime. Victimization studies have beenconducted at large universities and community colleges; however, there remains a lack ofresearch regarding private colleges. This study was designed to examine the reasoningbehind students’ crime-reporting behaviors and the influencers that impact theirdecisions. Cohen and Felson’s routine activity theory along with the collective-efficacytheory were used as frameworks to analyze the crimes that occur to college students aswell as to explore the reasons for not reporting some crimes to law enforcement. Thisresearch utilized archival data from a private (not-for-profit) college in the MidwestUnited States. The data were analyzed through coding and thematic development, supported by secondary coding review and member checks. Concepts explored throughthis study included examining students’ perceptions on their likelihood of reporting crimeand victimization as well as students’ feelings of safety while at college. Results showedthat students voiced consistent beliefs that their peers were likely to report crime andseveral factors influenced the reporting of crimes or victimization by students. Findingsalso showed that students felt generally safe while attending college but expressed a needfor improved safety systems on the campus. These findings draw no definitiveconclusions about why students choose to not report crime but do promote social changeby helping administrators develop policies that collaboratively engage students, lawenforcement, and campus officials with crime reporting and education programs toreduce the underreporting of crime and victimization.
