Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physics If the student has not already pursued the subject of Physics in a text-book, he is recommended to take a text in connection with the course here given, as references are continually made which assume that he is acquainted with the ordinary facts, terms, and laws of Physics. This work is, in fact, so nearly supplementary to Sharpless and Philips's Natural Philosophy, that a few subjects fully treated in the experiments of that book, are passed over here with simple reference to the fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Laboratory Manual of Physics Thls point of view concerning the function of experimental work in elementary physics is maintained throughout the Manual, particularly in the statement of the purpose of each experiment and in the questions asked in the discussions. Consistently with the View that the laboratory course is not a sufficient basis from which to evolve physics as a science, it is assumed in the discussion of experimental results that the pupil has at least carefully read his text-book on the subject of the experiment, and is therefore in _a position not only to state the conclusions which are supported by his work, but also to pass judgment on the quality of it by comparing his results with those known to be correct. A general discussion of how to measure a thing is, in their opinion, not a satisfactory basis for the labora tory work of a student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physics, Vol. 1: A Laboratory Manual Fro Colleges and Technical Schools The authors believe that physical laboratory work should accompany lecture and recitation work in physics from the beginning of the study of this science in the college or technical school, and they believe that a laboratory manual should set forth a series of definite exercises. A general discussion of how to measure a thing is, in their opinion, not a satisfactory basis for the laboratory work of a student. This laboratory manual has been prepared with these ideas in mind. A group of students who are beginning a laboratory course on the basis of this manual should be required to study the intro-ductory chapter, and to solve the problems illustrating the calculation of probable error. The system which has been used with great satisfaction by the authors in the assignment of laboratory exercises is described on page 2. The authors believe that one of the most important aspects of laboratory work in physics is that it gives to the student a series of more or less distinctly theoretical problems based upon experimental data obtained by themselves, and in accordance with this idea, the authors believe that a student should be required to work up his laboratory reports outside of the laboratory as specified on page 3. This manual is issued in three small volumes. The first volume is devoted to Precise Measurements and to Experiments in Mechanics and Heat; the second volume is devoted to Elementary and Advanced Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism; and the third volume is devoted to Photometry and to Experiments in Light and Sound. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experiments in Physics: Laboratory Instruction for College Classes In preparing this text-book for use in Physical Labora tories, the needs of all three of these classes of students have been borne in mind, how successfully it is not possi ble to say. The only experiments described are quantita tive, because it is assumed that purely qualitative ones are demonstrated in the lecture-room. Those experiments which are suited to a definite student or to a definite class must be selected by the instructor; and it is impossible to give any precise statement as to which are best adapted for any particular purpose. It has been impossible, of course, to include all the experiments which might be desired; but it is hoped that no important principle or piece of appara tus has been slighted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual This manual has been adapted particularly to the present equipment and requirements of a course in experimental physics in Harvard College known as Physics C. This course is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures to the class as a whole, two each Week, and one hour each week of recitation and problem work to the class in small sections. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry are necessary. Familiarity with the use of logarithms or the slide rule is strongly recommended for reducing the labor of computation. The course should properly be preceded by a more elementary course in physics. Small type has been used for a few descriptive and explanatory sections of the text which are not immediate parts of the specific directions of the experiments. The small type does not, however, signify relative unimportance of the material. Introductory remarks setting forth the application of the principles involved precede each experiment or each group of experiments involving the same principles. In writing this manual, some material, for which much indebtedness is expressed, has been freely taken from Professor Sabine's Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements. For two reasons a revision of this book has become necessary. The distribution of time in Physics C has been so altered that the laboratory work now occupies a shorter time than formerly, and the exercises have therefore become unduly long. It is also desirable to include a wider variety of experiments in the manual, so as to fit the somewhat different needs of the various classes of students who use it. In the course of the revision many experiments have been altered, where experience has shown this to be advantageous, or on account of changes in the apparatus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Use in Schools and Colleges In the report of the Committee of Ten, appointed by the National Educational Association in 1892, occurs the following To give good instruction in the sciences requires of the teacher more work than to give good instruction in mathematics or the languages, and the sooner this fact is recognized by those who have the management of schools, the better for all concerned. The science teacher must regularly spend much time in collect ing material, preparing experiments, and keeping collee tions in order; and this indispensable labor should be allowed for in programmes and salaries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Secondary Schools and Colleges This manual is the outgrowth of several years of experience with pupils in the physical laboratory as well as of a study of the growth and development of laboratory work in secondary schools. The development of the work in my own hands has been attended with an elimination of qualitative exercises, or illustrative experiments, and a reduction of the number of exercises at first attempted. My experience and study lead me to believe that the best results are attained by comparatively few exercises, the greater part of them being quantitative in character. Quality of work, rather than quantity, should receive the most consideration. The tendency in my own work has been to strive after greater accuracy from year to year. To allow pupils to do quantitative exercises in a careless manner, with small regard for accuracy, is to do them an injury. Under these circumstances a quantitative exercise ceases to be such and becomes qualitative; and, moreover, it is a pretense and a sham. The position here taken as to number and kind of exercises is, I believe, in accord with the best thought and practice of the time. In support of this it is necessary only to mention the report of the Physical Conference to "The Committee of Ten." In the selection of experiments and methods of procedure great care has been taken to adopt only those that are capable of giving results of a considerable degree of accuracy in the hands of pupils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics, Molecular Physics and Heat: A Twelve Weeks' College Course This book is neither a laboratory manual in the ordinary sense of the term, nor yet is it Simply a class-room text. It is intended to take the place of both. It represents the first portion of a college course in General Physics in which the primary object has been to establish an immediate and vital connection between theory and experiment. Of course such connection always exists in the mind of the teacher; but the use in class-room and laboratory of separate texts, separate courses, and separate instructors is on the whole unfavorable to making it clear to the student. The stu dent who takes an experimental course which is out of imme diate connection with class-room discussion, who is provided in the laboratory with an isolated set of directions, or with a labora tory manual which is essentially a compendium of directions for all conceivable experiments, may perhaps in some cases obtain, with the aid of references to text-books, a comprehensive grasp of the theory and bearings of his experiment; but it is safe to say that in a great majority of cases he does not do so. The most serious criticism which can be urged against modern laboratory work in Physics is that it often degenerates into a servile following of directions, and thus loses all save a purely manipulative value. Important as is dexterity in the handling and adjustment of apparatus, it can not be too strongly emphasized that it is grasp of principles, not skill in manipulation which should be the primary object of General Physics courses. Furthermore, an intimate connection between lecture and laboratory work is no less important from the standpoint of the former than of the latter. Without the fixing power of laboratory applications, a thorough grasp of physical principles is seldom, or never, gained. This is particularly true in Mechanics, the most fundamental of all the branches of Physics, for it is only through it that the door is opened to insight into the theories of Heat, Sound, Light, and Electricity.
