Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Days at Georgetown, and Other Papers Perhaps not Without rashness, is mainly responsible for bringing to light the following pages. Undertaken merely as reminiscences of the days of my own student life at Georgetown, I had no sooner begun to write before the plan widened into a sketch of the College. But such a sketch required historical research and exceeding care, and imposed upon me rigid scrutiny of the little-understood legal status of the ex-jesuits in Maryland and the District of Columbia during the years of the suppression. Two or three chap ters, consequently, had to be indited before I could get down to the task proper which I had set for myself, of personal recollections of college days from 1851 to 1862. C: Comprising a History of Georgetown University, and an Account of the Centennial Celebration In the adoption of this suggestion the scope of the proposed work was extended so as to include a history of the College during its first century. Unexpected difficulties, encountered in the execution of this plan, have deferred the publication of the book to a time when the motives that led to its inception may seem to have lost something of their force. Delay, how ever, has probably operated to increase the accuracy and perfection of the work. Moreover, the history of an institution that initiated, however humbly, the higher education of Catholics in the United States, and whose development has always been closely linked with the general progress of college and university teaching in our country, as it cannot be lacking in permanent interest to scholars, can never be considered untimely. The volume is therefore put forth at this time Without apology. It remains only to give public expression here to the gratitude due from the Faculty of Georgetown University to the two authors and the publisher Of this book, and to all who, by written or Spoken word, by co-operation, as individuals or as members Of committees, have aided to the worthy com memoration Of the first Centenary of Georgetown College. Book excerpt: The Paper Bag Principle: Class, Colorism, and Rumor in the Case of Black Washington, D.C. considers the function of oral history in shaping community dynamics among African American residents of the nation's capitol. The only attempt to document rumor and legends relating to complexion in black communities, The Paper Bag Principle looks at the divide that has existed between the black elite and the black "folk." The Paper Bag Principle focuses on three objectives: to record lore related to the "paper bag principle" (the set of attitudes that granted blacks with light skin higher status in black communities); to investigate the impact that this "principle" has had on the development of black community consciousness; and to link this material to power that results from proximity to whiteness. The Paper Bag Principle is sure to appeal to scholars and historians interested in African American studies, cultural studies, oral history, folklore, and ethnic and urban studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960 publication of We Hold These Truths marked a significant event in the history of modern American thought. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is
