Book excerpt: Rates of collegiate relationship violence are at an all-time high (Breiding, 2015). Although colleges and universities are taking steps towards reducing these rates, recent research has uncovered a fatal flaw in their methods: terminology. Lederman and Stewart (2003) surveyed relationship violence prevention campaigns across college campuses, finding 'domestic violence' as the most widely used name for collegiate relationship violence, yet also the one college students were least comfortable with using. 298 students at a large, southeastern university completed a survey through the online distribution tool Qualtrics. Using a basic 1-7 Likert Scale, students were asked to rate the appropriateness of the following terms: domestic violence, dating violence, dating abuse, intimate partner violence, intimate terrorism, and common couple violence. Findings indicate that students were significantly more likely to attribute the terms domestic violence, dating violence, and dating abuse to a situation if the perpetrator of violence was male rather than female. When partners were dating, students felt most comfortable with the terms 'dating violence' and 'dating abuse.' Most importantly, terminology was found to be correlated with perceptions of severity, blame, and recommendations for bystander action. Ultimately, this study suggests that schemas surround each possible relationship violence term, and offers the idea that simply adjusting what college student deem as 'domestic violence' could unlock the key to bystander intervention efforts and violence reduction in the future.

Book excerpt: Arlene Weisz and Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence prevention. Enhancing existing research with the shared wisdom of the nation's prevention community, Weisz and Black describe program goals and content, recruitment strategies, membership, structure, and community involvement in practitioners' own words. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant. Weisz and Black show that multisession programs are most useful in preventing violence and assault, because they enable participants to learn new behaviors and change entrenched attitudes. Combining single- and mixed-gender sessions, as well as steering discussions away from the assignment of blame, also yield positive results. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing. Manuals help in guiding educators and improving evaluation, but they should also allow adolescents to direct the discussion. Good programs regularly address teachers and parents. Ultimately, though, Weisz and Black find that the ideal program retains prevention educators long after the apprentice stage, encouraging self-evaluation and new interventions based on the wisdom that experience brings.

Book excerpt: Violence against women on college campuses has remained underreported and often under addressed by both campus security and local law enforcement, as well as campus administrators. The researchers, practitioners, and activists who contribute to this pertinent volume Addressing Violence Against Women on College Campuses examine the extent, nature, dynamic and contexts of violence against women at institutions of higher education. This book is designed to facilitate an ongoing discussion and provide direction on how best to prevent and investigate violence against women, and intervene to assist victims while reducing the impact of these crimes. Chapters detail the necessary changes and implications that are part of Title IX and other federal legislation and initiatives as well as the effect these changes have had for higher education actors, including campus administrators, victim advocates, and student activists. The contributors also explore the importance of campus efforts to estimate the extent of violence against women; educating young men and women on the nature of sexual and dating violence; and shifting efforts to both make offenders accountable for their crimes and prompt all bystanders to act. Addressing Violence Against Women on College Campuses urgently argues to make violence prevention is not separate from but rather an integral part of the student experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ending a college dating relationship is common as college coeds begin trying on romantic relationships for size. Ending the relationship because the relationship has become violent can add more complexities to an already unpleasant task. This study was an attempt to better understand the stay/leave decisions for college women who were victims of dating violence and whether or not these decisions differed for college women who were involved in violent versus non-violent dating relationships. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the factors that influenced the likelihood of female college students' dating relationships to end using Choice and Lamke's (1999) two-part decision-making model. In summary, victims reported greater relationship distress, less attraction towards someone other than their partner, less relationship safety, lower relationship efficacy, less social support, and fewer good friends than non-victims. Results also indicated that college women's consideration of "Will I be better off" was more important in the decision to leave a dating relationship than their perception of "Can I do it?" In addition, results from Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) modeling found that, while victims believed they were more likely to be better off leaving their violent, dating partners, they felt less able to actually leave the relationship than their non-victim counterparts. MIMIC modeling also found that being a victim or not of dating violence did not predict breakup directly. These findings have important implications for prevention and treatment of dating violence and can be used to further the research in the area of dating violence, college students, and stay/leave decisions.

Book excerpt: This honors thesis attempts to find the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IVP) at the Pennsylvania State University - University Park Campus. It primarily tests the General Strain Theory to evaluate if IVP can have a significant effect on mental health which in turn would affect an individual's college GPA. To answer this question, a survey using a modified version of the Conflict Tactic Scale (Strauss 2004), a scale often used by researchers to measure dating and relationship violence, was distributed anonymously in various classes on campus. Ultimately, the study obtained 70 participants but because not all participants answered all of the questions, the results of 56 participants were evaluated. Results showed that there is no impact of IPV on college GPA; however, the only thing we found to be consistent with the general strain theory is that mental health is a significant predictor of college GPA, however, based on this study we cannot accurately and distinctly trace mental health with IPV. Further analysis needs to be in place in order to determine the relationship between IPV and mental health and then the relationship to GPA.

Book excerpt: A recent article in the American Journal of Public Health reported that violence was occurring in 24% of all intimate partner relationships among young adults (Whitaker et al., 2007). Other studies have indicated that the rates of dating violence are as high as 86% (Rhatigan & Street, 2005). This dissertation study sought to determine whether or not female students at Illinois State University were, in fact, initiating dating violence against their male partners. The results of the study indicated that almost 22% of the women who responded admitted to initiating dating violence, compared to 9% of the men who responded. The only significant variable for women who initiated dating violence was having witnessed father-to-mother violence.
