Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years the educational role of the museum has come to be central to its mission. There are now far more educational opportunities, new spaces, new interfaces - both digital and physical, and a growing number of education and interpretation departments, educational curators and public engagement programmes. Despite these developments, however, higher education has remained a marginal collaborator compared to primary and secondary schools and to other forms of adult learning. This has meant that the possibilities for partnerships between universities, colleges, museums and galleries has remained relatively unexplored, especially in relation to their potential for generating innovative patterns of research and learning. This book addresses the key issues which are preventing such partnerships and examines how to enable more effective and creative connections between museums and higher education. The authors identify conceptual and practical barriers and explore whether current academic models are fit for purpose. They argue that as pressures mount on public educational resources around the world, there needs to be an urgent increase in the exchange of knowledge across these sectors and the forging of world-class scholarly partnerships. Examples of research undertaken internationally offer best practice models for collaboration and integration. This book will be compulsory reading for museum and educational specialists and those interested in engaging in museum/higher education partnerships. It will also be of interest to those involved in policy and decision-making in education, the museum sector and national and local government.

Book excerpt: The wars of the twentieth century, their losses, and their toll on humanity are a frequent and important theme in the work of Christian Petersen. Though he is often known as "the gentle sculptor," Petersen gave much attention to the subject of warfare. To some extent, his entire life might be said to be based on a reaction to war since it was avoidance of the German military that prompted his family to emigrate from Denmark in 1893. Petersen lived through World War I, and sculpture on this theme constituted some of his earliest and most successful commissions. When World War II erupted, Petersen had been sculptor-in-residence at Iowa State for seven years, and its effect on college-age students was something he felt strongly. His work of the war years expresses the sacrifice and tragedy of the global fight. The theme continued to be important in the post-war years when he designed a number of proposals for war memorials, all of which focused not on victory, but on the sorrow and loss of war. By the late 1940s, his strong sentiments began to combine with his religious life after he joined the Catholic Church. It seems he often portrayed Christ as the victim of mankind's warring ways. This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition All the Evils?Christian Petersen and the Art of War (August 24, 2009 through February 26, 2010), presented by the Christian Petersen Art Museum, University Museums at Iowa State University.

Book excerpt: The first guide of its kind in over a half century, this work contains 1,108 descriptions in 24 categories. It presents a comprehensive picture of museums, galleries, and related facilities in American universities and colleges. The first 10 chapters offer an overview of the field, dealing with such aspects as history, mission, types, governance, and much more. It is an essential in-house reference tool for all campus museums and galleries and should be found in university, college, and public libraries as well. Students and their visitors may be surprised at the wealth and variety of culture readily available on their own campuses, and this guide makes the investigatory task easy. The directory describes museums and similar facilities in 24 categories, with nearly half the institutions being art museums and art galleries. The others range from agricultural museums to botanical gardens. Beyond being fascinating in its scope, the book provides a wide variety of information about the operations of the facilities--practical details that are not available anywhere else. This is the book where professionals can learn about each other and visitors can research just what is available on any campus.

Book excerpt: Connecting Museums explores the boundaries of museums and how external relationships are affected by internal commitments, structures and traditions. Focusing on museums’ relationship with heath, inclusion, and community, the book provides a detailed assessment of the alliances between museums and other stakeholders in recent years. With contributions from practitioners and established and early-career academics, this volume explore the ideas and practices through which museums are seeking to move beyond what might be called one-off contributions to society, to reach places where the museum is dynamic and facilitates self-generation and renewal, where it can become not just a provider of a cultural service, but an active participant in the rehabilitation of social trust and democratic participation. The contributors to this volume provide conceptual critiques and clarification of a number of key ideas which form the basis of the ethics of museum legitimacy, as well as a number of reports from the front line about the experience of trying to renew museums as more valuable and more relevant institutions. Providing internal and external perspectives, Connecting Museums presents a mix of applied and theoretical understandings of the changing roles of museums today. As such, the book should be of interest to academics, researchers and students working in the broad fields of museum and heritage studies, material culture, and arts and museum management.
