Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Statewide Movement for the Collection and Preservation of Minnesota's War Records, Vol. 1 The organization of the counties is now in progress. The response to the Commis sion's appeal, together with independent suggestions and comment appearing daily in the columns of our newspapers, indicates that the time is ripe for the launching of a war records drive in this state. In fact the action of the Commission has been ah ticipated in at least one Minnesota county, Freeborn, where the register of deeds on his own initiative has for some weeks been gathering data on the individual military records of the soldiers from that county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Records It has been the desire of the School of Mines and Metallurgy to set down in this booklet the record of its members who engaged in military service during the Great War, hoping in this way to put into permanent form interest ing and valuable data that would otherwise soon be lost. Doubtless there are errors and omissions but the records have been compiled only after great care and diligent inquiry. The part taken by our men is inspiring and is a credit to themselves and the institution. It is in commemoration of their services that this Bulletin is put forth and dedicated to them by their Alma Mater. When the conflict burst upon us in April, 1917, four members of the Faculty and sixty-one students left school to enter the First Officers Training Camp. Other students went into organizations that were being recruited to war strength and still others waited for the draft. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Records of Schoharie County Veterans of Four Wars If "he that ruleth his own spirit is mightier than he who taketh a city," the private soldier must be entitled to recognition in a measure equal to his services. There are heroes and there have been heroes, but not all of them are mentioned in history, song and monumental inscriptions. Service without sacrifice cannot be called heroism, although many have risen to be honored, by popular applause, who have sacrificed nothing; having no regard for the rights of others. Believing that the private soldier, in all American wars, who did his full duty in a patriotic spirit, is equally entitled to recognition with those of superior rank, and that his name and position in the military history of the past should not be lost and forgotten, I have attempted this work without excuse or apology. The veterans and their friends will not forget that those who fought to maintain the rights of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are entitled the fullest measure of honor and respect. Proper honors shown to a worthy servant or benefactor cannot be compassed by a banquet, the blare of trumpets, or the thunder of artillery. Such spasms subside as the sound dies away, and the smoke disappears, while the recipient of the ovation may often be found behind the procession or paying the bills. One hundred and fifteen years have elapsed since war was declared against the American Colonies by England, and yet, after an active service of five years, even the names of each militia man of this county cannot be obtained without great pains and doubt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care of Records in a National Emergency, 1941 Before the outset of the present war, most European nations had made preparations for the removal and storage of their most valuable records. In the spring of 1939 many records of the French Foreign Office had been removed from Paris to a safer location and plans were under way for the evacuation of many of the documents in the British Public Record O ee. In Budapest, areas within the Hungarian Royal State Archives building set aside for the preservation of val uahle medieval documents were protected by sandbags banked in the passages and against the windows. The sandbags were put in place during the crisis of September 1938 and were still in place in March 1939. It is noteworthy that in these cases precautions were taken in advance of actual military danger. Lack of advance planning, on the other hand, has sometimes been responsible for the unnecessary destruction of valuable records in Europe. Collections have been weeded out indiscriminately or sent intact to the paper mill. Others have been sent to unsafe or poorly improvised storage places. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ripley County's Part in the World War, 1917-1918 Thanks are due to the county chairmen of the various war organizations for their reports. Also to the War Mothers for their help in collecting the soldiers' and sailors' service records for the state and county honor rolls. Thanks are due to each of our five county papers for their help in carrying notices, articles and so forth in connection with the collection and publishing of our history. Mr. Harry Monroe of Batesville deserves special credit for furnishing practically all of the war pictures for the book aside from individual photographs. If an historian had been put to work at the be ginning oi our part in the war, we should doubtless have kept a few things that are lost to us. But it is believed that the essentials remain and will prove to be entirely trustworthy as a record of Ripley coun ty's World War service at home and abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racine County in the World War To make clearer some facts of local interest it became necessary to develop the topic of military operations somewhat beyond the lines originally laid down, but it is hoped that this will serve to make the pages the more interesting. The collection of pictures, both of local and general subjects adds a great deal to the value of the work. The story of the civilian war work was taken almost entirely from official records. Names of workers were obtained from those who were empowered to select and publish them. For instance, the names of Liberty Loan workers were obtained from the Chairman of the Liberty Loan Committee and where any question has arisen as to the personnel of the various sub-committees, his list has been referred to as authoritative. For the interesting collection of portraits in the book, the thanks of the entire com munity are due to E. T. Billings, Harry J. Leonard, John A. Hood, G. A. Malme, Julius Pavek, Tom Anderson, I. B. Grant, and, in fact, almost every local photographer for their generous cooperation in selecting and reproducing photographs of former service men. It has been found impossible to give them credit for this in connection with the pictures themselves in every case, and this Opportunity is taken to express my own appreciation and that of the men so generously served. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Snyder County Annals, Vol. 2: A Collection of Sketches and Portraits of Soldiers, Sailors, Nurses, and Civilians Engaged in the World War Together With Other Historical Data Gathered at Random The undersigned presents to the public herewith, "Snyder County Annals, Vol. II." May 1, 1919 we issued the first volume of this series not expecting to issue the second volume so soon. The return of the valiant boys from the front and we, feeling the need for some one to record the military records of Snyder Countians in the great war, began collecting the sketches and photographs of the soldiers and sailors and nurses, and, after publishing them in the POST, we began printing the pages of this book. The publication of a book in connection with a busy newspaper office entails considerable work, and what has made this book more difficult was the fact that many delayed sending in their records and so delayed the completion of the book. Even now it is necessary to close the volume with meager sketches in some cases. Where we were supplied with reliable first hand information promptly our work was made all the more pleasant and we know that in those cases, it is all the more satisfactory to the soldier and to all of his friends. As must be expected there will be some imperfections due to the meager reports received from the families of the soldiers, but we have done the best it was possible to do with the information at hand. No one not intimately connected with the compilation of a book such as this will ever know the difficulties encountered, only a few of which are named on pages 267-8-9, but we felt the soldiers were entitled to some permanent record as a Memorial, and we submit this volume as our mite in the recognition due to Snyder County's valiant sons and daughters. H. King, J. M. Williams, and T. H. Hatchett, requested that I should write a character sketch of as many as possible of the Caswell soldiers who took part in the Great World War. This Board felt that it was fitting that some record should be made. In the sketches which follow I have tried in a very humble way to carry out the wishes of these gentlemen, but I wish to express my very great regret that I have been unable to secure full information which would have enabled me to write a sketch of each boy who participated. This work has been a labor of love on my part, and has been done without compensation. I have completed as many sketches as I could, and I very much hope that some one may be able to secure a service record of the boys whose names do not appear which may be added in a future book. May I not leave on record this statement? I saw our boys go forth to battle. They were of the finest kind; strong of muscle, clear of mind, and true of vision. They made for themselves a record of fidelity and courage. They did their duty like men, and, while my sketches are not ornate, and, while they show only in a very humble way the record, still I feel very grateful that I have had the honor to help preserve for future generations their names and activities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fayette County in the World War The task has been a peculiarly difficult one; pro gress has been slow owing alike to the limited amount of time at the writer s disposal and the many difficulties encountered in gathering authentic data. No time nor pains have been spared to make the work accurate in every detail. It has entailed a voluminous correspond ence and endless searching of newspaper files and records of various organizations and war agencies. Owing to the fact that state and federal departments have, as yet, nothing to make records by counties avail able, it was necessary to gather all material within the county and to build the structure of this record from the ground up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yates County in the World War: 1917-1918 In presenting this volume, to commemorate Yates County's part in the World War, the author realizes more fully than anyone else its many imperfections. Having devoted the better part of a year to collecting the material in hand, we can only hope that our effort will, in a measure, fulfill the purpose for which it is intended. Great care has been exercised in compiling the record of those who were engaged in this war. This list contains only those actually credited to Yates county. Many who might have claimed this as their home went into service from other pieces and are credited to the county from which they were inducted. In some respects this is unfortunate; but it seemed best to the author not to include their records in this work. Our judgment in this matter may be criticized, but this volume is intended to be a historical record - a reference book for future use - and for this reason the lines have been more closely drawn than they otherwise would have been. We feel that some special reference should be made to the Penn Yan Chapter of the American Red Cross. While the record of this noble band of workers, most of whom are women, as set forth in detail elsewhere in this book, speaks for itself, the fact that much of this record was made under the direction of officers other than those whose pictures appear in the group of Red Cross officers, seems to call for a word of explanation. In an undertaking of this kind there must necessarily be some limitations as to the number of illustrations used, and for that reason, only the officers first chosen by the Red Cross are included in this book. Those having direction of the work at later periods of the war are entitled to a large share of the credit for the achievements of the Red Cross. All performed a noble service, and their work did much to lighten the burden of the boys in camp and at the front. Many were the sacrifices made that the boys might be made more comfortable, and the work of the Red Cross will always be gratefully remembered. It is not the purpose of the author to sit in judgment and try to decide "who is who" in the matter of Yates County's heroes and workers in the world war. The records and other information which we are publishing are from official sources. Whatever is lacking to make this work complete was beyond our reach. Having did out best, we dedicate our humble efforts to "the boys who went." "The broken soldier, kindly bade to stay Sat by his fire, and talked the night away; Wept o'er his wounds, or, tales of sorrow done. Shouldered his crutch, and showed how fields were won."
