Book Synopsis The Crime of Destruction and the Law of Genocide by : Ms Caroline Fournet
Download or read book The Crime of Destruction and the Law of Genocide written by Ms Caroline Fournet and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original work provides a thought-provoking and valuable resource for researchers and academics with an interest in genocide, criminology, international organizations, and law and society. In her book, Caroline Fournet examines the law relating to genocide and explores the apparent failure of society to provide an adequate response to incidences of mass atrocity. The work casts a legal perspective on this social phenomenon to show that genocide fails to be appropriately remembered due to inherent defects in the law of genocide itself. The book thus connects the social response to the legal theory and practice, and trials in particular. Fournet's study illustrates the shortcomings of the Genocide Convention as a means of preventing and punishing genocide as well as its consequent failure to ensure the memory of this heinous crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to study the departure and reception of refugees in 19th-century Europe, from the Congress of Vienna to the 1870-1880s. Through eight chapters, it draws on a transnational approach to analyze migratory movements across European borders. The book reviews the chronology of exile and shows how European states welcomed, selected, and expelled refugees. In addition to presenting the point of view of nation-states, it reflects the experience of those migrating. The book addresses departure into exile, captured through the material circumstances of crossing borders in the 19th century, and examines the emergence of new ways to pursue political commitments from abroad. The outcasts are considered in all their diversity, with a prominent place accorded to women and children, many of whom also moved under duress. The book aims to shed light on the forced migrations of Europeans across Europe, while also considering the global dimension, looking at exile to the Americas or the French colonies. A final chapter examines the impossibility or difficulty of returning from exile to one’s country of origin, as well as the a posteriori memorial constructs around that crucial experience.

Book excerpt: Since 1953, the year in which the first European School was founded, publications and systematic research on this unique form of international nursery, primary and secondary education have been limited and fragmented leaving it as relatively blank spot in the international education arena. This book is the first-ever in the almost 60-year history of the European School that removes the obscurity and misconceptions that exist about it in a comprehensive manner. It describes, analyses and evaluates its position emanating from the main research question: what are the most important causes for its rise, what developments has it seen and what results has it achieved considering the studies and careers of its alumni. Furthermore, it is critical of some of its practices, makes suggestions for improvements and opens a debate about future developments. It also touches on current internationalisation efforts and structures in secondary and higher education in some European countries.

Book Synopsis The Life of Irene Nemirovsky by : Olivier Philipponnat
Download or read book The Life of Irene Nemirovsky written by Olivier Philipponnat and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major biography of Irène Némirovksy, author of the acclaimed and internationally bestselling Suite Française — with new material never published in English. Irène Némirovksy's own life was as dramatic as any fiction. And few writers enjoy a posthumous resurgence as astonishing as hers after the international triumph of Suite Française. The authors of this fascinating biography have had access to previously unpublished documents and to surviving family members in Russia, researching there her childhood in the Ukraine, and tracing her odyssey first to St Petersburg, where her father was a successful financier, and then, as the family was forced to flee the Russian Revolution, to Finland, Sweden and finally France in 1919. Meticulously researched and passionately felt, this is a remarkable, panoramic biography of an exceptional writer, a moving portrait of a woman and of her extraordinary times, and a sweeping saga of a turbulent period of European history, holding up a mirror to the world of publishing, intellectual thought, society and the darker shadow of prejudice between the wars.
