This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He's a warrior, a Finnish special forces soldier, who cut down scores of enemy troops while operating on his own behind Red Army lines during the Soviet invasion of his homeland in 1939. After that, he joined a Waffen SS brigade so that he could personally wage war deep inside Russia. Now in December of 1944, he is in Manhattan, sent by Nazi Germany to pave the way for an operation, which, if successful, will claim the lives of tens of thousands of Americans. While Germany's purpose for the mass killing of civilians on American soil at this late point in the war is to leverage the Roosevelt Government into a truce aimed at holding off further Allied advances into Western Europe after Normandy, the battle-hardened Finn is privately on a mission of his own. Driven by hatred of the United States for what he views as it ongoing support of efforts to crush Finland and bring it under Soviet control, he devises a murderous retaliatory plan, and once settled in New York, secretly sets out to implement it. In doing so, he uses his skills as a solo operator to adapt to a menacing environment, evade the FBI, and brutally eliminate anyone seen as an obstacle to his violent objective.

Book excerpt: In order to combat terrorism, states often rely on the testimony of people who are closely connected to terrorist groups and who are more vulnerable than others to the use of intimidation against them or against people close to them. This may endanger the success of prosecutions often based on long and complicated investigations. Strengthening international co-operation in this field is also a useful means to ensure the protection of those persons whose protection would prove difficult on a merely national basis, given the conditions in the country where they are located. The Council of Europe has extensive experience in this area, based on existing European conventions and other standards. On that basis, and having drawn up a survey of national laws and practice in member and observer states, the Council of Europe has drawn up a new standard, Recommendation Rec(2005)9 of the Committee of Ministers to member states on the protection of witnesses and collaborators of justice, which is the subject of this publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is to explore teachers’ evolving personal epistemologies, or the beliefs we hold about the origin and development of knowledge in the context of teaching. The chapters focus on a range of conceptual frameworks about how university and field?based experiences influence the connections between teachers’ personal epistemologies and teaching practice. In an earlier volume we investigated preservice and inservice teachers’ beliefs and teaching practices (Brownlee, Schraw and Berthelsen, 2011). While we addressed the nature of teachers’ personal epistemologies, learning and teaching practices, and approaches for changing beliefs throughout teacher education programs, the volume did not address conceptual frameworks for the development of teacher’s personal epistemologies. To address this gap, the book is focused on teacher educators, teachers and teacher education programmers in universities with an overall aim of highlighting how we might support preservice teachers’ involvement in learning that is challenging and inservice teachers’ engagement in professional experiences that promote changes in teaching practice. We argue that teachers need to be encouraged to question their beliefs and develop increasingly sophisticated beliefs about their knowledge and their students’ knowledge that facilitate learning and intellectual growth.
