Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context is a core notion of linguistic theory. However, while there are numerous attempts at explaining single aspects of the notion of context, these attempts are rather diverse and do not easily converge to a unified theory of context. The present multi-faceted collection of papers reconsiders the notion of context and its challenges for linguistics from different theoretical and empirical angles. Part I offers insights into a wide range of current approaches to context, including theoretical pragmatics, neurolinguistics, clinical pragmatics, interactional linguistics, and psycholinguistics. Part II presents new empirical findings on the role of context from case studies on idioms, unarticulated constituents, argument linking, and numerically-quantified expressions. Bringing together different theoretical frameworks, the volume provides thought-provoking discussions of how the notion of context can be understood, modeled, and implemented in linguistics. It is essential for researchers interested in theoretical and applied linguistics, the semantics/pragmatics interface, and experimental pragmatics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential of software applications to solve an array of office and administrative problems is increasing faster than the ability of users to exploit it. We need to make systems easier to learn and more comfortable to use. This book reports a major advance in the effort to accomplish both goals. Flexcel enables users to modify access and dialog dynamics to their specific requirements. Relying on a plan recognition feature, the system proposes adaptations or uses of adaptations. The ongoing conflict between the adaptive and the adaptable is resolved in an integration: user and system share the responsibility for the initiatives, decision-making and execution. A "critic" component of the system then analyzes the user's handling of the adaptation tools and suggests improvements. The system offers an environment in which users can explore as they learn. HyPlan implements the context-sensitive help that facilitates learning on demand. When the PLANET plan-recognition feature identifies the kinds of support for work that may possibly be required, HyPlan provides, on request, specific assistance in the form of hypermedia or animated displays and tutorials. Developmental research has shown that users take advantage of opportunities to adapt interfaces only in conjunction with help-functions -- which are accepted when they do not interrupt work. And studies by social scientists have shown that adaptations of technical systems have to be integrated into the overall process of organizational innovation and undertaken cooperatively. This book will stimulate all those concerned with software -- from computational, cognitive, ergonomic, or organizational standpoints -- to reconceive the relationship between design and user support.

Book excerpt: Machine translation of natural languages is one of the most complex and comprehensive applications of computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. This is especially true of knowledge-based machine translation (KBMT) systems, which require many knowledge resources and processing modules to carry out the necessary levels of analysis, representation and generation of meaning and form. The number of real-world problems, tasks, and solutions involved in developing any realistic-size knowledge-based machine translation system is enormous. It is thus difficult for researchers in the field to learn what a system "really does". This book fills that need with a detailed case study of a KBMT system implemented at the Center for Machine Translation at Carnegie Mellon University. The research consists in part of the creation of a system for translation between English and Japanese. The corpora used in the project were manuals for installing and maintaining IBM personal computers (sponsorship by IBM, through its Tokyo Research Laboratory) Individual chapters describe the interlingua texts used in knowledge-based machine translation, the grammar formalism embodied in the system, the grammars and lexicons and their roles in the translation process, the process of source language analysis, an augmentation module that interactively and automatically resolves ambiguities remaining after source language analysis, and the generator, which produces target language sentences. Detailed appendices illustrate the process from analysis through generation. This book is intended for developers, researchers and advanced students in natural language processing and computational linguistics, including all those who have an interest in machine translation and machine-aided translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology Coloring Workbook is a breakthrough approach to learning and remembering the body's processes. Written and illustrated by experts who are both research scientists and teachers , it features 250 striking, original illustrations that will give students a clear and enduring understanding of physiology. Learning interactively, through coloring, thoroughly fixes physiological concepts in the mind and takes less time than memorizing from textbooks. Physiological processes are fully explained, and complex subjects are approached through the gradual introduction of simple drawings. The authors employ a logical and consistent use of color to convey invormation; for example, arterial blood is always red, whereas venous blood is blue, and capillary blood is violet. Each lesson includes clearly displayed labels and specific coloring instructions. This book is an invaluable and lasting resource for students in disciplines including anatomy and physiology, biology, nursing, physical therapy and rehabilitation, medical technology, nutrition, physical education, allied health and health sciences. The 250 plates in the book are organized in the following sections: Homeostasis The Cell Transport Mechanisms Nervous System Muscle Cardiovascular System Renal System Respiratory System Gastrointestinal System Metabolism Endocrine System Reproduction

This book was released on 1990 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lately some important scientific innovations have come from dialogues and discussions between human sciences and the more technically oriented fields of research. This especially applies to the border area of linguistics and artificial intelligence research work. The book gives a representative insight into the state-of-the-art. Still there are very few common ideas between linguistic interests and the challenges of artificial intelligence. Nevertheless numerous communications between linguistic, cognitive, psychological approaches and those of the computer sciences, as well as further single aspects come into sight. The contributions deal with problems belonging to the fields of psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, text linguistics and semantics, semantic representation, knowledge representation and knowledge acquisition, unification theory and unification grammar, construction of parsers and grammar theory, natural language processing, speech analysis and text generating systems, machine translation and the differences between man-man and man-machine communication.
