Book Synopsis Aurality by : Ana María Ochoa Gautier
Download or read book Aurality written by Ana María Ochoa Gautier and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this audacious book, Ana María Ochoa Gautier explores how listening has been central to the production of notions of language, music, voice, and sound that determine the politics of life. Drawing primarily from nineteenth-century Colombian sources, Ochoa Gautier locates sounds produced by different living entities at the juncture of the human and nonhuman. Her "acoustically tuned" analysis of a wide array of texts reveals multiple debates on the nature of the aural. These discussions were central to a politics of the voice harnessed in the service of the production of different notions of personhood and belonging. In Ochoa Gautier's groundbreaking work, Latin America and the Caribbean emerge as a historical site where the politics of life and the politics of expression inextricably entangle the musical and the linguistic, knowledge and the sensorial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smulyan demonstrates that popular culture represented more than just "escape" during the twentieth century's formative period. Far from providing an ideology-free zone, popular products and entertainments served as an arena where producers attempt to impose notions of race, class, gender, and nationhood, and consumers react to such impositions.
Book Synopsis An Antitrust Analysis of Bundled Loyalty Discounts by : Patrick Greenlee
Download or read book An Antitrust Analysis of Bundled Loyalty Discounts written by Patrick Greenlee and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider a monopolist in one market that faces competition in a second market. Bundled loyalty discounts, in which customers receive a price break on the monopoly good in exchange for making all purchases from the monopolist, have ambiguous welfare effects. To analyze such discounts as predatory pricing is incorrect. In some settings, they act as tie-in sales. Existing tests for whether such discounts violate Section 2 of the Sherman Act do not track changes in consumer surplus or total surplus. We present a new test and use it in an illustrative example based on SmithKline that assumes the "tied" market is a homogeneous good. If the tied market is characterized by Hotelling competition, bundling by the monopolist causes the rival firm to reduce its price. In numerical examples, we find that this can deter entry or induce exit.
Book Synopsis Turning Houses into Homes by : Clive Edwards
Download or read book Turning Houses into Homes written by Clive Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest times, people have striven to turn their houses into homes through the use of decoration and furnishings, stimulating in turn a major commercial sector dedicated to offering the products and services essential to feed the ever-changing dictates of domestic fashion. Whilst there is plentiful evidence to show that these phenomena can be traced to medieval times, it is arguable that the eighteenth century witnessed the birth of a widespread and sophisticated consumer society. With a comparatively wealthy and socially mobile society, eighteenth-century Britain proved to be a fertile ground for ideas of home improvement and beautification, which were to persist to the present day. Turning Houses into Homes not only maps the history, changes, development and structure of the retail furnishing industry in Britain over three centuries, but also examines the relationships between the retailer and the consumer, looking at how retailers helped stimulate and shape the demand of their customers. Whilst work has been done on specific aspects of the home, very little has been written on the interaction between the retailer and consumer, and the pressures brought to bear on them by issues such as gender, education, status, symbolism, taste, decoration, hygiene, comfort and entertainment. As such, this book offers a valuable conjunction of retail history and consumption practices, which are examined through a multi-disciplinary approach to explore both their intimate connections and their wider roles in society.
Book Synopsis How Do Migration and Remittances Affect Inequality? A Case Study of Mexico by : Zsoka Koczan
Download or read book How Do Migration and Remittances Affect Inequality? A Case Study of Mexico written by Zsoka Koczan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poverty-reducing effects of remittances have been well-documented, however, their effects on inequality are less clear. This paper examines the impact of remittances on inequality in Mexico using household-level information on the receiving side. It hopes to speak to their insurance role by examining how remittances are affected by domestic and external crises: the 1994 Mexican Peso crisis and the Global Financial Crisis. We find that remittances lower inequality, and that they become more pro-poor over time as migration opportunities become more widespread. This also strengthens their insurance effects, mitigating some of the negative impact of shocks on the poorest.
Book Synopsis Financial Inclusion by : Ms.Era Dabla-Norris
Download or read book Financial Inclusion written by Ms.Era Dabla-Norris and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have made important strides in promoting financial inclusion of firms and households. However, while the region is broadly at par with its peers on financial inclusion of firms, household inclusion lags behind. Nonetheless, there is substantial heterogeneity across LAC countries. Reducing borrowing costs and strengthening further the regulatory environment, while taking steps to protect efficiency and stability of the financial system, could help close financial inclusion gaps. Reducing financial participation and monitoring costs and relaxing collateral constraints will help spur growth and reduce inequality though trade-offs are likely, as illustrated in the case of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Peru.
Book Synopsis Advancing Financial Development in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Dyna Heng
Download or read book Advancing Financial Development in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Dyna Heng and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the state of financial development in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region as well as potential growth and stability implications from further development. The analysis suggests that access to financial institutions has expanded notably in the past decade, and the region compares favorably with other emerging market regions on this dimension. The region, however, continues to lag behind peers on broader financial development, especially with respect to markets, though there is substantial heterogeneity across countries. Financial systems in many LAC countries are also underdeveloped relative to their macroeconomic fundamentals. Further financial development could convey net benefits to the region, provided there is adequate regulatory oversight to prevent excesses.
Book Synopsis Migration and Remittances in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Ms.Kimberly Beaton
Download or read book Migration and Remittances in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Ms.Kimberly Beaton and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outward migration has been an important phenomenon for countries in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC), particularly those in Central America and the Caribbean. This paper examines recent trends in outward migration from and remittances to LAC, as well as their costs and benefits. For the home country, the negative impact from emigration on labor resources and productivity seems to outweigh growth gains from remittances, notably for the Caribbean. However, given emigration, remittance flows play key financing and stabilizing roles in Central America and the Caribbean. They facilitate private consumption smoothing, support financial sector stability and fiscal revenues, and help reduce poverty and inequality, without strong evidence for harmful competitiveness effects through shifts in the real exchange rate.
Book Synopsis Benefits of Global and Regional Financial Integration in Latin America by : Luc Eyraud
Download or read book Benefits of Global and Regional Financial Integration in Latin America written by Luc Eyraud and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timing is ripe to pursue greater regional financial integration in Latin America given the withdrawal of some global banks from the region and the weakening of growth prospects. Important initiatives are ongoing to foster financial integration. Failure to capitalize on this would represent a significant missed opportunity. This paper examines the scope for further global and regional financial integration in Latin America, based on economic fundamentals and comparisons to other emerging regions, and quantifies the potential macroeconomic gains that such integration could bring. The analysis suggests that closing the financial integration gap could boost GDP growth be 1⁄4 - 3⁄4 percentage point in these countries, on average.

Book Synopsis Social Security Policy in a Changing Environment by : Jeffrey R. Brown
Download or read book Social Security Policy in a Changing Environment written by Jeffrey R. Brown and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Security Policy in a Changing Environment analyzes the changing economic and demographic environment in which social insurance programs that benefit elderly households will operate. It also explores how these ongoing trends will affect future beneficiaries, under both the current social security program and potential reform options. In this volume, an esteemed group of economists probes the challenge posed to Social Security by an aging population. The researchers examine trends in private sector retirement saving and health care costs, as well as the uncertain nature of future demographic, economic, and social trends—including marriage and divorce rates and female participation in the labor force. Recognizing the ambiguity of the environment in which the Social Security system must operate and evolve, this landmark book explores factors that policymakers must consider in designing policies that are resilient enough to survive in an economically and demographically uncertain society.
