Book Synopsis The Coinage of the Bosporan Kingdom by : N. A. Frolova
Download or read book The Coinage of the Bosporan Kingdom written by N. A. Frolova and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In two earlier publications (BAR S56 and BAR S166) Nina Frolova analysed the products that characterised the Bosporan Kingdom in the 300 years between the reforms introduced under Nero and the final demise of autonomous Bosporan coinage in the mid-fourth century. The present volume takes that historical process one stage back in time by detailing the issues produced between the incorporation of the Bosporus into the kingdom of Mithradates VI of Pontus and the Neronian reforms. By providing a detailed catalogue of the material held in the State Historical Museum in Moscow and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, together with subsidiary collections, it is hoped that this volume will enable scholars throughout the world to renew their interest in a region which for so long has suffered from the isolation imposed by politics.

This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich numismatic collections of Turkish provincial museums are still relatively unknown and this volume presents for the first time the coinage in the museum of Amasya, which, under its ancient name of Amaseia, was one of the major centres of north-east Anatolia. In the Hellenistic period it was capital of the powerful kingdom of Pontus, while under the Roman empire it boasted the title of `Metropolis and First City' of its province. Over 4,500 coins held in the museum are catalogued, ranging in date from the 5th century BC until the 11th century AD. Most are finds from the surrounding region, so that there are rich holdings from the mints of Amaseia, Amisus, Sinope and Cappadcian Caesarea; but over 50 other mints in Asia Minor are represented and some coins come from as far afield as Alexandria in Egypt and Arles in Gaul.

Book Synopsis The Supreme Gods of the Bosporan Kingdom by : Yulia Ustinova
Download or read book The Supreme Gods of the Bosporan Kingdom written by Yulia Ustinova and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first systematic study of the cults of the Bosporan Kingdom, which existed in South Russia in the first centuries AD. The research is based on a variety of sources: archaeological evidence and inscriptions, largely unknown to the non-Russian readers, as well as historical and literary texts. The religion of the Bosporus is viewed in this monograph as a blend of Greek and indigenous Iranian traditions. Its first part is dedicated to the cult of Celestial Aphrodite. The second part examines the controversial cult of the Most High God and its alledged Jewish affinities. The book, illustrated with thirty figures, is an important contribution to the understanding of the religious life in Greek colonies, and the history of Eastern Mediterranean in Late Antiquity.
Book Synopsis Money and the Early Greek Mind by : Richard Seaford
Download or read book Money and the Early Greek Mind written by Richard Seaford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were the Greeks of the sixth century BC able to invent philosophy and tragedy? In this book Richard Seaford argues that a large part of the answer can be found in another momentous development, the invention and rapid spread of coinage, which produced the first ever thoroughly monetised society. By transforming social relations monetisation contributed to the ideas of the universe as an impersonal system, fundamental to Presocratic philosophy, and of the individual alienated from his own kin and from the gods, as found in tragedy.
Book Synopsis A Research Guide to the Ancient World by : John M. Weeks
Download or read book A Research Guide to the Ancient World written by John M. Weeks and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The archaeological study of the ancient world has become increasingly popular in recent years. A Research Guide to the Ancient World: Print and Electronic Sources, is a partially annotated bibliography. The study of the ancient world is usually, although not exclusively, considered a branch of the humanities, including archaeology, art history, languages, literature, philosophy, and related cultural disciplines which consider the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean world, and adjacent Egypt and southwestern Asia. Chronologically the ancient world would extend from the beginning of the Bronze Age of ancient Greece (ca. 1000 BCE) to the fall of the Western Roman Empire (ca. 500 CE). This book will close the traditional subject gap between the humanities (Classical World; Egyptology) and the social sciences (anthropological archaeology; Near East) in the study of the ancient world. This book is uniquely the only bibliographic resource available for such holistic coverage. The volume consists of 17 chapters and seven appendixes, arranged according to the traditional types of library research materials (bibliographies, dictionaries, atlases, etc.). The appendixes are mostly subject specific, including graduate programs in ancient studies, reports from significant archaeological sites, numismatics, and paleography and writing systems. These extensive author and subject indexes help facilitate ease of use.
