The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 159 inverse microbarns, collected during the 2011 PbPb run. The J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, while neutrons are detected using zero degree calorimeters. The measured cross section is d sigma[coh, X[n]0[n]]/d y(J/psi) = 0.36 +/- 0.04\ (stat) +/- 0.04 (syst) mb in the rapidity interval 1.8

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of??−?+?− photonuclear production in ultra-peripheral Au-Au collisions at √s{sub NN} = 200 GeV from the STAR experiment. The?+?−?+?− final states are observed at low transverse momentum and are accompanied by mutual nuclear excitation of the beam particles. The strong enhancement of the production cross section at low transverse momentum is consistent with coherent photoproduction. The?+?−?+?− invariant mass spectrum of the coherent events exhibits a broad peak around 1540 ± 40 MeV/c2 with a width of 570 ± 60 MeV/c2, in agreement with the photoproduction data for the?°(1700). We do not observe a corresponding peak in the?+?− final state and measure an upper limit for the ratio of the branching fractions of the?°(1700) to?+?− and?+?−?+?− of 2.5% at 90% confidence level. The ratio of?°(1700) and?°(770) coherent production cross sections is measured to be 13.4 ± 0.8{sub stat.} ± 4.4{sub syst.}%.

The STAR collaboration presents a measurement of?° and direct??− photoproduction in ultra-peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions at √s{sub NN} = 200 GeV. We observe both exclusive photoproduction and photoproduction accompanied by mutual Coulomb excitation. We find a coherent cross-section of?(AuAu → Au*Au*?°) = 530 ± 19 (stat.) ± 57 (syst.) mb, in accord with theoretical calculations based on a Glauber approach, but considerably below the predictions of a color dipole model. The?° transverse momentum spectrum (p{sub T}2) is fit by a double exponential curve including both coherent and incoherent coupling to the target nucleus; we find?{sub inc}/?{sub coh} = 0.29 ± 0.03 (stat.) ± 0.08 (syst.). The ratio of direct?+?− production is comparable to that observed in?p collisions at HERA, and appears to be independent of photon energy. Finally, the measured?° spin helicity matrix elements agree within errors with the expected s-channel helicity conservation.

Book excerpt: The STAR collaboration at RHIC presents measurements of J/[psi] → e+e− at mid-rapidity and high transverse momentum (p{sub T} > 5 GeV/c) in p+p and central Cu+Cu collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. The inclusive J/[psi] production cross section for Cu+Cu collisions is found to be consistent at high p{sub T} with the binary collision-scaled cross section for p+p collisions, in contrast to previous measurements at lower p{sub T}, where a suppression of J/[psi] production is observed relative to the expectation from binary scaling. Azimuthal correlations of J/[psi] with charged hadrons in p+p collisions provide an estimate of the contribution of B-meson decays to J/[psi] production of 13% ± 5%.

This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.
