Book excerpt: The goal of this research program is the development of coherent X-ray sources is the kilovolt range. An initial application of short wavelength radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet region for photoemission studies of GaHz surfaces has been performed demonstrating the feasibility of this class of experiments. A basic and long-standing problem in the field of coherent sources is that associated with the generation of coherent energy in the extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions. During the last three years, picosecond rare gas halogen (RGH) excimert laser technology, on account of the very favorable scaling relationships governing the spectral brightness of these sources, has emerged as a key factor in new techniques useful for generation of coherent radiation below 100 nm. The operation of RGH systems will be extended down into the femtosecond region, a development that will enable sources with peak powers P in the 1TW

Book excerpt: High harmonic generation featuring ultra-short pulses, short wavelengths and highly coherent radiation in a table-top setup has become one of the most versatile and affordable tools for studies of atomic and molecular dynamics as well as for nano-scale coherent diffractive imaging. In this book, we show the background and technical aspects of the generation and enhancement of high order harmonic radiations down to the water window region (2.3 - 4.4 nm). The source is specifically tailored and developed for imaging applications. By controlling and stabilizing the phase-matching condition in a gas cell, an extreme ultra-violet source which satisfies these requirements has been generated. Using a harmonic source with wavelengths around 30 nm, a resolution of 45 nm for a micrometer-size transmission sample has been obtained and biological-like absorption samples are also successfully reconstructed. A phase retrieval algorithm with a phase-curvature correction is developed to take advantage of the higher photon flux when placing the sample near the focus point.

Book excerpt: This book offers a review of the use of extended ablation plasmas as nonlinear media for HHG of high-order harmonic generation (HHG). The book describes the different experimental approaches, shows the advantages and limitations regarding HHG efficiency and discusses the particular processes that take place at longer interaction lengths, including propagation and quasi-phase matching effects. It describes the most recent approaches to harmonic generation in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) range with the use of extended plasma plumes, and how these differ from more commonly-used gas-jet sources. The main focus is on studies using extended plasmas, but some new findings from HHG experiments in narrow plasma plumes are also discussed. It also describes how quasi-phase-matching in modulated plasmas, as demonstrated in recent studies, has revealed different means of tuning enhanced harmonic groups in the XUV region. After an introduction to the fundamental theoretical and experimental aspects of HHG, a review of the most important results of HHG in narrow plasmas is presented, including recent studies of small-sized plasma plumes as emitters of high-order harmonics. In Chapter 2, various findings in the application of extended plasmas for harmonic generation are analyzed. One of the most important applications of extended plasmas, the quasi-phase-matching of generated harmonics, is demonstrated in Chapter 3, including various approaches to the modification of perforated plasma plumes. Chapter 4 depicts the nonlinear optical features of extended plasmas produced on the surfaces of different non-metal materials. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the analysis of new opportunities for extended plasma induced HHG. The advantages of the application of long plasma plumes for HHG, such as resonance enhancement and double-pulse method, are discussed in Chapter 6. Finally, a summary section brings together all of these findings and discuss the perspectives of extended plasma formations for efficient HHG and nonlinear optical plasma spectroscopy. The book will be useful for students and scholars working in this highly multidisciplinary domain involving material science, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy. It brings the new researcher to the very frontier of the physics of the interaction between laser and extended plasma; for the expert it will serve as an essential guide and indicate directions for future research.

Book excerpt: High spectral brightness rare gas halogen (RGH) sources can be used to generate coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation by either harmonic generation mechanisms or direct multiquantum excitation of appropriate gain media. In order to demonstrate the basic characteristics of these two approaches, recent comparative measurements have been made. With the use of a 4 GW 193 nm (ArF*) system operating at a pulse duration of 10 ps, harmonic generation has been studied in several atomic and molecular media and used to generate 20 kW at 64.3 nm and 200 W at 38.6 nm. In addition, stimulated emission in molecular hydrogen on both the Lyman and Werner bands excited by two quantum absorption at 193 nm, has resulted in the generation of radiation as short as 117.6 nm at an efficiency of conversion approaching one percent. It has been concluded that the latter method is superior for the generation of short wavelength radiation. Extension of these results to both shorter wavelengths and higher power levels requires the ultraviolet. Recent studies of collision-free multiply-charged ion production with irradiation at 193 nm point to an anomalously strong coupling to high Z materials with processes involving as many as 99 quanta being observed. These multiquantum processes in the 40 - 80 eV rane in certain atomic systems can be generated with existing laser instrumentation. (Author).

Book excerpt: The motivating idea of the first Topical Meeting on Picosecond Phenomena, which took place at Hilton Head Island in 1978, was to bring together scien tists and engineers in a congenial setting who were developing picosecond lasers with those who were applying them to problems in chemistry, physics, electronics, and biology. The field has advanced remarkably in the following six years. This is reflected in the size of the conference which has more than doubled in the past six years and now includes scientists from many countries around the world. As evidenced by the papers in this volume, the appl ication of ultrafast 1 ight pulses continues to grow in new and diverse directions encompassing an increasingly wide range of subject areas. This progress has gone hand-in-hand with the development of new and more precise methods of generating and measuring ultrafast light pulses, which now extend well into the femtosecond time domain. It was this latter advance which was responsible for changing the name of the conference to Ultrafast Phenomena. The 1984 meeting was held at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, Cal ifornia from June 11 to 15 under the sponsorship of the Optical Society of America. A total of 320 registered participants, including 65 students, attended the three and one-half day conference. The overall enthusiasm of the participants, the high quality of the research presented, and ambiance of the setting combined to produce a successful and enjoyable conference.
