Book excerpt: This working manual covers everything from theory, practical design, templates, installation, filling, equipment, maintenance to removal. With the combination of the TVA Technical Monograph 75-Steel Sheet Pile Cofferdams on the Rock manual and the US Corps of Engineers manual - Theoretical Manual for Design of Cellular Sheet Pile Structures our Cellular Cofferdams handbook make for an excellent reference book. Cellular Cofferdams, the large, barrel-like, interconnected structures formed of steel sheet piling and filled with coarse soil. Generally utilized for dewatering large construction sites as well as building piers, quaywalls, bulkheads, breakwaters and artificial islands. Over the years, a few papers on design theory have come forth, but only one complete publication devoted to the entire subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have suggested that most existing design methods are excessively conservative. This investigation is directed toward providing a data base through the documentation and comparing five case histories where instrumentation was used to monitor the behavior. Primary consideration was given to the response of the cofferdams under differential loading. In the course of the investigation, the response of each cofferdam was documented and dissected in terms of the behavior at each stage of the differential loading. A strong correlation is found to exist between the lateral cell deflection and the level of differential loading, with the exact nature of the correlation depending on certain key parameters including cell foundation, cell fill material, cell width to height ratio, presence of a stabilizing berm, and nature of loading. It is found for conservatively designed cells that the response falls into a predictable pattern which can be characterized in terms of nondimensionalized parameters for both normal and more severe levels of loading. In addition to deformations, information is provided on interlock tensions where available. The results are believed to provide a baseline for cofferdam behavior that can be useful in gaging the expected behavior of other cofferdams and for verifying the accuracy of new forms of predictive tools such as the finite element method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of Foundation Engineering covers the theory, analysis, and practice of foundation engineering, as well as its soil mechanics and structural design aspects and principles. The book is divided into five parts encompassing 21 chapters. Part A is of an introductory character and presents a brief review of the various types of foundation structures used in civil engineering and their historical development. Part B provides the theoretical fundamentals of soil and rock mechanics, which are of importance for foundation design. Part C deals with the design of the footing area of spread footings and discusses the shallow foundation methods. Part D describes the methods of deep foundations, while Part E is devoted to special foundation methods. Each chapter in Parts C to E starts with an introduction containing a synopsis of the matter being discussed and giving suggestions as to the choice of a suitable method of foundation. This is followed by a description of the methods generally used in practice. Simple analyses of structures, presented at the conclusion of each chapter, can be carried out by a pocket calculator. This book will prove useful to practicing civil and design engineers.

Book excerpt: The leading authority in the field offers a unique and comprehensive treatment of the construction aspects of offshore structures, rather than the more commonly addressed design considerations. Extensively updated, this second edition provides a new chapter on extending offshore technologies to inland waterways and emphasizes recent advances-including floating structures, deep-water structures, ice-resistant structures, and bridge foundations. Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures details all the particulars of building in a marine environment, including construction equipment, marine operations, installing piles, pipelines, and cables, steel and concrete offshore platforms, and underwater repairs. Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures provides an essential reference to engineers in the oil and service industries and to marine construction planners, designers, and contractors. New in the second edition: How the physical environment and geotechnical conditions affect construction Increased attention to protecting the natural environment and compliance with regulatory provisions Recent developments in positioning, instrumentation, and underwater inspection, plus a new section on concrete and steel floating structures and installing permanent moorings Expanded treatment of deep water bridge piers as well as locks and dams on major rivers.
