Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve been a die-hard Liverpool FC fan. The dream of witnessing a thrilling match at Anfield and catching a glimpse of the players in front of the Melwood training center had always lingered in my mind. After graduating from college, the pressures of the real world were looming. My friends were scrambling to secure their dream jobs, investing time and effort to climb the career ladder. Amidst this hustle and bustle, I made a daring decision: I was going to turn my dream into reality. I hopped on my trusty bicycle and embarked on an epic journey to Liverpool. It took me 235 days to finally arrive at Anfield. From the heart of China through the vast landscapes of Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, and, at last, England. I braved the scorching heat of the Gobi Desert, the desolation of Siberia, and even cycled through the European winter. A staggering 17,190 kilometers later, I had reached my dream destination, only to watch the home match in a humble Liverpool pub. While I may not have achieved the dual goal of seeing a game at Anfield and boosting my career, I’ve never regretted my decision. This journey fulfilled a lifelong desire and taught me lessons that no classroom ever could. This book brings you along for the ride, recounting the real-life adventures and experiences that shaped this unforgettable journey.
Book Synopsis Even the Terrible Things Seem Beautiful to Me Now by : Mary Schmich
Download or read book Even the Terrible Things Seem Beautiful to Me Now written by Mary Schmich and published by Agate+ORM. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best columns by the Pulitzer Prize–winning Chicago Tribune writer, on diverse topics like family, loss, mental health, advice, and the Windy City. Over the last two decades, Mary Schmich’s biweekly column in the Chicago Tribune has offered advice, humor, and discerning commentary on a broad array of topics including family, milestones, mental illness, writing, and life in Chicago. Schmich won the 2012 Pulitzer for Commentary for “her wide range of down-to-earth columns that reflect the character and capture the culture of her famed city.” This second edition—updated to include Schmich’s best pieces since its original publication—collects her ten Pulitzer-winning columns along with more than 150 others, creating a compelling collection that reflects Schmich’s thoughtful and insightful sensibility. The book is divided into thirteen sections, with topics focused on loss and survival, relationships, Chicago, travel, holidays, reading and writing, and more. Schmich’s 1997 “Wear Sunscreen” column (which has had a life of its own as a falsely attributed Kurt Vonnegut commencement speech) is included, as well as her columns focusing on the demolition of Chicago’s infamous Cabrini-Green housing project. One of the most moving sections is her twelve-part series with U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow, as the latter reflected on rebuilding her life after the horrific murders of her mother and husband. Schmich’s columns are both universal and deeply personal. The first section of this book is dedicated to columns about her mother, and her stories of coping with her mother’s aging and eventual death. Throughout the book, Schmich reflects wisely and wryly on the world we live in, and her fond observances of Chicago life bring the city in all its varied character to warm, vivid life.
Book Synopsis Two Hamlets in Nam Bo by : David Lan Pham
Download or read book Two Hamlets in Nam Bo written by David Lan Pham and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author was born in 1940 and spent his childhood in two small villages, the paternal and the maternal, in southern Vietnam: Binh Chuan and Tuy An (An Phu). The villages were deeply affected by the powerful political events of the next fifty years. In this memoir (first sentence: "I was born as the Japanese Troops were invading northern Vietnam"), the author writes of what he saw, heard and knew, providing an invaluable social history of the country. Readers will learn about a people who have endured separation, dictatorship, carnage, persistent suffering and poverty, all the while yearning for independence and prosperity. Included are many stories--some funny, some heartbreaking--that reveal how the Vietnamese people lived, as well as their thoughts on war, on the French, Japanese and Americans, on the Nationalist and Communist governments, and on escape. The result is a heartfelt "social painting" of the nation.

Book Synopsis Where It Hurts by : Reed Farrel Coleman
Download or read book Where It Hurts written by Reed Farrel Coleman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominated for the 2017 Edgar Award for Best Novel From the critically acclaimed and award-winning author comes a gritty, atmospheric new series about the other side of Long Island, far from the wealth of the Hamptons, where real people live—and die. Gus Murphy thought he had the world all figured out. A retired Suffolk County cop, Gus had everything a man could want: a great marriage, two kids, a nice house, and the rest of his life ahead of him. But in the course of a single deadly moment, his family is blown apart, and he is transformed from a man who believes he understands everything into a man who understands nothing. Now divorced and working as a courtesy van driver for a run-down hotel, Gus has settled into a mindless, soulless routine. But his comfortable waking trance comes to an end when ex-con Tommy Delcamino asks him for help. Four months earlier, the battered body of Tommy’s son TJ was discovered in a wooded lot, yet the Suffolk County PD doesn’t seem interested in pursuing the killers. In desperation, Tommy seeks out the only cop he ever trusted—Gus Murphy. Gus reluctantly agrees to see what he can uncover, and as he begins to investigate, he finds that Tommy was telling the truth. Everyone involved with the late TJ Delcamino—from his best friend, to a gang enforcer, to a Mafia capo, and even the police—has something to hide, and all are willing to go to extreme lengths to keep it hidden. It’s a dangerous favor Gus has taken on as he claws his way back to take a place among the living, while searching through the sewers for a killer.

Download or read book "Getting By" written by Donald M. Nonini and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do class, ethnicity, gender, and politics interact? In what ways do they constitute everyday life among ethnic minorities? In "Getting By," Donald M. Nonini draws on three decades of research in the region of Penang state in northern West Malaysia, mainly in the city of Bukit Mertajam, to provide an ethnographic and historical account of the cultural politics of class conflict and state formation among Malaysians of Chinese descent. Countering triumphalist accounts of the capitalist Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, Nonini shows that the Chinese of Penang (as elsewhere) are riven by deep class divisions and that class issues and identities are omnipresent in everyday life. Nor are the common features of "Chinese culture" in Malaysia manifestations of some unchanging cultural essence. Rather, his long immersion in the city shows, they are the results of an interaction between Chinese-Malaysian practices in daily life and the processes of state formation—in particular, the ways in which Kuala Lumpur has defined different categories of citizens. Nonini's ethnography is based on semistructured interviews; participant observation of events, informal gatherings, and meetings; a commercial census; intensive reading of Chinese-language and English-language newspapers; the study of local Chinese-language sources; contemporary government archives; and numerous exchanges with residents.
