Book excerpt: The purpose of this sociolinguistic case study is to analyze the language processes and speech patterns of code-switching of an Egyptian Arabic-English-speaking three-year-old girl named Sara. Sara, who is the daughter of the study's author, has been exposed to and has learned both languages simultaneously since she was nine months old. Family composition played an immense role in the language the parents used with their child and the language the child chose to speak. Sara's parents spoke to her in Arabic since she was born; thus, a one-language household model was used. At the age of nine months, Sara started to attend day care and was exposed to English for the first time. The integral role of the environmental influences of the English language were considered and examined with regard to Sara's language choices within the framework of family gatherings, community settings/activities, and recreation/leisure activities, and the positive influence of these contexts was assessed. Sara facilitated her natural communicative abilities by code-switching lexical items between Arabic and English and vice versa to complete her sentences. Lexical switches including nouns, verbs, and adjectives were the most susceptible to code-switching. In addition, nouns and adjectives were code-switched more than verbs because of the incongruence in verbs between Arabic and English. Sara code-switched depending on the languague abilities of the interlocutor. However, there was no association between Sara's code-switching and the topics of conversation. It was found that the proportion of intersentential code-switching decreased over time and that of intrasentential code-switching increased during the three-year study.

Book excerpt: Different Tongues (Why Children Code Switch?) is a valuable book that gives us answers to endless questions that we have as parents who wish to raise bilingual children: Will teaching the child two languages end up with the child not speaking any language clearly? What role do parents play in controlling their childrens code switching? When children switch languages when speaking, should this be seen as meaningful, insightful or not to be tolerated? Does where I live have an impact on how my children code switch? ; The father is the only one who speaks the minority language, is this enough input for the child to be brought up bilingually. These questions and many others that parents are faced with are discussed in this book. Actually, Different Tongues (Why Children Code Switch?) proved quite valuable to me when I began my own family. I was an Anglophone married to a French Quebecer and I lived in Quebec Canada, which is French. I was the only English speaking person in my childrens lives for the first five years of their lives, so I was not sure if bilingualism was feasible for our family since I spoke the minority language. In fact, this book has enabled me to understand how children learn two languages at the same time; how children may mix their languages in the early years, but soon after this stage, the child begins to code switch, within his two languages, in meaningful ways. Different Tongues (Why Children Code Switch?) gives a new perspective on childrens code switching in todays world. In the past, it was seen as inherently bad, whereas in this book, it shows how a child can now use code switching to more clearly transmit his language, as a contextualization tactic; and this is now seen as a clear advantage that the child possesses as compared to others who are not bilingual. In fact, this advantage is definitely a paradigm shift for todays parents when it comes to their childrens code switching. Patrick McCarthy has contributed to the literature on bilingual development by providing an excellent overview of issues surrounding code-switching in young children. As his book points out, code-switching is normal behavior in children exposed to two or more languages, as it is in adults. Parents and teachers will find useful information about childrens bilingual development in this book. Book excerpt: This volume demonstrates that mixed utterances in young bilinguals can be analyzed in the same way as adult code-switching. It provides new insights not only in the field of code-switching and of language mixing in young bilinguals, but also in issues concerning general questions on linguistic theory which are difficult to be answered with monolingual data.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, Saarland University (Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Anglophone Kulturen), course: Hauptseminar First Language Acquisition, 5 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I analyse the patterns of intra-sentential code switching in the speech of bilingual children aged between of two and four years. The first section will deal with some of the theoretical approaches to code switching which try to establish certain grammatical rules for this linguistic phenomenon. Afterwards, I will analyse the code switches in the speech acts of different children in order to find out more about the nature of these switches. The aim is to find out whether code switches, within the sentence boundaries, always occur in the same position or if they can be found anywhere in the sentence. Furthermore, I will analyse what types of words are being switched and if the switches violate the word order of the sentences. All this will be looked at with regard to the principles mentioned in the first section and whether the code switches adhere to these principles or violate them. The findings and results presented here should be considered with reservation since the brevity of this paper does not allow the analysis of a representative amount of data. The data is taken from the CHILDES Corpus as well as from Gawlitzek-Maiwald and Tracy's article Bilingual Bootstrapping and from Albrecht's publication I can speak German- und Deutsch: The development and use of code-switching among simultaneous and successive English-German bilingual children.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate the early code switching patterns of a simultaneous multilingual subject (Aris) in accordance with Muysken's (2000) code switching typology: insertion and alternation. Firstly, the records of naturalistic spontaneous conversations were obtained from the parents via e-mail, phone calls and researcher's interval observation sessions. After a detailed revision of the records, code switching samples were categorized into two groups: insertion and alternation. Then, the code switching samples performed by the subject were ordered chronologically. It was found that the insertion type of code switching occurs at the earlier stages of multilingual development whereas the alternation type of code switching comes out later. This case indicated that the form of code switching gets more complex and intentional as linguistic competence and awareness enhance. The results as consistent with the explanations of MacSwan (2000) and Koike (1987) who emphasized that code switching develops in parallel with linguistic ability, and it should not be assumed as a deficit in the early simultaneous multilingual development. The study is a considerable case analysis in terms of including Turkish, English, and Arabic in a multilingual context.

Book excerpt: The study finds the patterns of bilingual children's code-switching during conversation who acquired Bangla as their first language and English as a second language. The study takes a closer look at bilingual children's speech performances from two-word to telegraphic stage and finds if the code-switching patterns occur in an order during their speech development. It also presents the percentage of the frequency level of the occurred code-switching patterns, the fundamental triggers for code-switching, and the reasons behind the children's and parents code-switching. Code-switching is the central issue of bilingual research (Milroy, 1995, p. 7) and the study findings contribute more information on code-switching and early bilingualism.

Book excerpt: This research attempts to expose the patterns of language behavior of two five-year old bilingual children through the analysis of the code-switching and code-mixing occurrences in their everyday conversational interactions. The goal of the study is to analyze the code choice and the motivation behind such pattern in order to see whether there are any differences between the two case studies, and most of all, what is causing these differences in linguistic behavior to occur. Data used in analysis was collected during informal conversations recorded in home domain of the two families studied. The recorded data along with the observational notes collected was then analyzed sentence by sentence and separated into several dyads in order to understand the relation between the children's code-switching/code-mixing and the interlocutor. It is concluded that most common motivation behind their code choice is solidarity -establishing "we code", referential, directive, and reactive to positive/ negative face and power. The major difference between the two children's language behavior regarding code choice is rather in the patterns of code-switching versus code-mixing. The boy, being a natural bilingual who acquired the second language (L2) simultaneously is more prone to code-switch in certain situations. On the other hand, the girl, who acquired L2 consecutively and therefore adopted the syntax of Serbian language, uses more code-mixing during her conversational interactions. This showed close connection of the linguistic behavior with the linguistic environment exposing essential mechanisms of children's ability to adjust their language skills to their conversational needs.

Book excerpt: The volume presents a selection of contributions by leading scholars in the field of code-switching. In the past the phenomenon of code-switching was studied within different subfields of linguistics and they all took their own perspectives on code-switching without taking into account findings from other subdisciplines. This book raises a question of a much broader multidisciplinary approach to studying the phenomenon of code-switching; calls for integration of disciplines; and illustrates how frameworks from one subfield can be applied to models in another. The volume includes survey chapters, empirical studies, contributions that use empirical data to test new hypotheses about code-switching, or suggest new approaches and models for the study of code-switching, and chapters that discuss principles and constraints of code-switching, and code-switching vs. transfer. The book is easily accessible to anyone who is interested in the phenomenon of code-switching in bilinguals.

Book excerpt: Researchers from Jean Piaget (1932) to Sehlauoi (2008) have utilized small case studies to intensively examine naturally occurring child language production in the home environment. This qualitative, 5-year longitudinal, five-year case study continues the focus of previous research on child bilingualism and code-switching; however, it aims to strengthen the previously tenuous connection linking said bilingualism with the speech of fraternal boy/girl twins, who are simultaneously making code choices and reflecting their gender language usage of these choices. The purpose of this study was to identify each twin’s code-switching patterns in Spanish and English in the bilingual home environment, examine the differences in their language choices, and reflect on their gendered language use as it pertains to each child’s own language production choices. The study connects the results of this research to previous research on child code-switching and reveals the similarities and differences between these two patterns and new ways of understanding the rich variety of linguistic understandings and possibilities in bilingual speech of twins. The study demonstrates that while Spanish code-maintenance was the preferred code choice by both twins throughout the length of the study, the female twin consistently code-switched into English and took more total turns in English than her twin brother while the male twin code-switched more frequently within a turn. These code-switching occurrences may be related to their gender. The limitations of this study, future directions of research, and conclusions are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The present study aimed to inform typical bilingual language development by exploring code-switching behaviors in young sequential bilinguals in formal and informal contexts. Data from eight young Spanish-English bilingual children were analyzed to examine the complexity and diversity of code-switched utterances and compare code-switched utterances produced during free play and a story retell. The children code-switched more frequently during free play (informal context) than during the story retell (formal context). Nouns were the syntactic element code-switched most frequently in both conditions. Code-switched words in the role of object were code-switched most frequently during the story retell task whereas code-switched words with the role of the subject were produced most frequently. The findings have clinical implications.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The present study investigated the structural patterns of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA)-English code-switching in the domains of classroom and interviews at the American University in Cairo (AUC) by applying Pieter Muysken's typology of code-mixing and relating it to the work of Poplack (1980) and Myers-Scotton (1993). It also aimed to stand on the nature of inflectional derivational and close-classed morphemes affixed to code-switched lexical items. The nature of the study was descriptive exploratory in which textual linguistic analysis was employed to analyze audio-recorded verbal data. The data was collected by observing four undergraduate classrooms held by the Department of English Language Instruction at AUC and conducting three focus group interviews with AUC graduate students. The results indicated that insertion pattern was more frequent in both domains, followed by alternation and congruent lexicalization (CL), which occurred more frequently in the interview domain. The results also showed that ECA definite article il- was utilized with English nouns in the insertion and CL patterns in both domains. While verb inflections were affixed to ECA verbs in classroom domain and to English verbs in the interview domain. The results indicated the use of English as the matrix language in classroom domain and the variation of the matrix language between ECA and English in the interview domain.
