Book excerpt: Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) as a form of radar to create images of objects, uses the motion of the radar antenna over a targeted region to provide finer spatial resolution than is possible with conventional beam-scanning radars by mounting the antenna on a moving platform such as an aircraft or spacecraft. As antenna aperture (the 'size' of the antenna) is defined by the distance the SAR device travels over a target in the time taken for the radar pulses to return to the antenna, the larger the aperture is, the higher the image resolution, therefore, this enables SAR to create high resolution images with comparatively small physical antennas.This special book aims to provide the updated theories and methods for the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard satellites to detect ocean processes, i.e., SAR ocean remote sensing. It is a hi-tech application field having been developed since late 1970s and become a powerful tool for obtaining dynamic signatures from the remote and broad ocean.

As part of the Nineteenth General Assembly of The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Symposium (IUGG) in Vancouver, Canada, Union Symposium U4, "Variations in Earth Rotation" was held August 18-19 1987. The Convenor was Dennis D. McCarthy, U.S. Naval Observatory with P. Paquet, Observatoire Royal de Belgique and M. G. Rochester, St. Johns University serving as co-convernors. In a session on internal structure of the Earth papers dealt with the geophysical effects on Earth rotation parameters. Mantle anelasticity increases the free core nutation (FCN) period by a few days. The period of the FCN and the amplitudes of the main nutation components are sensitive to the ellipticity of the core?]mantle boundary (CMB), and a non-hydrostatic increase of 400m in the flattening of the CMB is a possible explanation of the discrepancies from theory. An alternative suggestion rests on the subseismic description of the nutation spectrum of the stratified liquid core. Evidently new models will have to take into account contributions from the oceans, mantle anelasticity, non-hydrostatic pre-stress, CMB topography and internal core structure.

Distributional data come in many different flavors, including ship-based observations of density and remotely-sensed tracking and movement data. These data provide complementary perspectives on species distributions but should not be combined for a variety of reasons including different spatial and temporal scales and resolution. There are many high quality datasets on marine birds and mammals in the North Pacific available for analyses, including the North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database and the Seabird Tracking Database. More information is becoming available all the time. Because ship-based and tracking observations are not spatially and temporally comprehensive, species-habitat models (i.e., coupling of apparent spatial distributions with biophysical factors that predict species distributions) are necessary. There are many different and highly technical approaches to habitat modeling or species distribution modeling; composite model output may provide optimal information, but this depends on the goals of the study"--Page vii.

His novel analysis of the reproductive ecology of bony fish of cooler seas offers some support for this, but a review of fisheries past and present confirms that sustainability is rarely achieved. The relatively open structure and strong variability of marine ecosystems is discussed in relation to the reliability of resources used by the industrial-level fishing that became globalised during the 20th century. This was associated with an extraordinary lack of regulation in most seas, and a widespread avoidance of regulation where it did exist. Sustained fisheries can only be expected where social conditions permit strict regulation and where politicians have no personal interest in outcomes despite current enthusiasm for ecosystem-based approaches or for transferable property rights.
