Book excerpt: Historical research and local knowledge suggest that salmon vulnerable to harvest by fisheries in Subdistricts 5 and 6 of the Norton Sound management area represent a mixed stock, with unique populations migrating through marine waters and into spawning streams throughout the area and beyond. Incomplete understanding of salmon harvest composition and migration characteristics in Norton Sound has constrained managers’ ability to direct stock-specific persecution of fisheries. Consequently, fisheries in Subdistricts 5 and 6 are managed as a single unit and salmon are assigned to stocks based on the subdistrict in which they were harvested. This strategy has raised concern among local stakeholders that proportional harvest rates are being obscured and salmon caught in Subdistricts 5 and 6 could be bound for spawning streams in other subdistricts in the Norton Sound area. This project will use acoustic telemetry to address the critical management assumption that chum and coho stocks vulnerable to harvest in Subdistricts 5 and 6 are bound for spawning streams within those subdistricts and should be managed concurrently. This project will attempt to mimic the timing and location of nearshore salmon fisheries in Subdistricts 5 and 6 to tag chum and coho salmon such that the tagged fish are reasonably representative of the available mixed stocks. Sequential acoustic detection of tagged salmon by coastal marine and inriver hydrophone receivers will be used to estimate the spawning distribution of mixed stocks and describe spatiotemporal characteristics of nearshore migration. Results of this project are intended to inform management decisions by clarifying salmon stocks available for harvest in subdistricts 5 and 6 and stock-specific migration characteristics through those subdistricts so that stocks with harvestable surpluses can be targeted while minimizing impacts to less productive stocks.

Book excerpt: In 2009, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game began a 4-year spawning distribution and abundance estimation study in response to concerns over the status of the Susitna River chum (Oncorhynchus keta) and coho (O. kisutch) salmon stocks. This report summarizes results of mark-recapture abundance and distribution assessments completed during 2012. Four fish wheels were used at river mile (RM) 22 in the Susitna River to capture and tag chum and coho salmon with dart tags in July and August 2012. Two fish wheels were used at RM 6 in the Yentna River and 2 fish wheels were used at RM 34 in the mainstem Susitna River to sample salmon for tags. Estimated spawning abundance of chum salmon was 229,903 (SE 155,193) fish for the mainstem Susitna River and 99,442 (SE 84,876) fish for the Yentna River. Estimated spawning abundance of coho salmon was 90,397 (SE 36,701) fish for the mainstem Susitna River and 93,919 (SE 10,688) fish for the Yentna River. A total of 799 radio tags were placed in chum and coho salmon. Their movements were tracked using 10 ground tracking stations, 15 aerial surveys of the mainstem Susitna River, 6 aerial surveys of the Yentna River, and 2 drainagewide aerial surveys. All but 50 of the radio tags were relocated, and 716 (89.6%) were assigned a putative spawning location. Both chum and coho salmon exhibited bank orientation at the tagging site.

Book excerpt: Summer chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in the Yukon River support robust commercial and subsistence fisheries; however, fishery managers have had incomplete information about their run timing, spawning distribution, stock composition, and abundance. To address this, a radiotelemetry study was implemented on summer chum salmon in 2014 and 2015. A total of 1,232 (2014) and 1,199 (2015) summer chum salmon were fitted with radio transmitters. Radiotagged summer chum salmon were mapped, travel rates were estimated, and proportions of tagged fish recovered within different tributaries were determined. Basic mark-recapture assumptions were tested and abundance above the tagging site was estimated. Summer chum salmon were found to be widely distributed within the Yukon River drainage. Although a few tagged fish were observed in most locations, roughly 50% of tagged fish were observed in the Anvik, Koyukuk, and Bonasila rivers each year. Summer chum salmon destined for upper river spawning areas traveled faster than those to lower river areas. Summer chum salmon tended to recover quickly after being tagged, and traveled relatively fast within the mainstem Yukon River, but slowed down after entering their spawning tributaries. The 2014 mark-recapture abundance estimate was about 2,100,000 fish, which corresponded with summer chum salmon passage at the mainstem Yukon River sonar near Pilot Station. The 2015 mark-recapture abundance estimate was also about 2,100,000 fish, which was larger than the summer chum salmon passage at the sonar near Pilot Station. Results from this study help to evaluate sonar passage estimates and provide fishery managers with more detailed information about distribution and migratory patterns of individual summer chum salmon stocks within the Yukon River drainagewide population.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) migration and spawning are unique components of the salmon life cycle because they require synchrony of behavior with other individuals as well as with acceptable fluvial conditions. As with other organisms that exhibit group mating behavior, it is likely that environmental cues trigger coho salmon movement to spawning grounds. These cues may also provide usable habitat for migration and spawning. River discharge, temperature, and length of day have long been assumed to be the environmental cues which trigger migration and spawning of coho salmon as coho return within the same season each year to spawn. Hatchery studies have also shown that the timing of reproductive behavior is heritable. If this heritability is determined by the fluvial conditions of the spawning grounds, then a predictable relationship should exist between reproductive behavior and the hydrologic and thermal regimes. Surprisingly, no defensible correlations between discharge thresholds and spawning or migrating activity have been identified for naturally reproducing coho salmon. Thermal, velocity, and depth limitations have been identified for coho salmon, but these values have not been examined in combination or within the context of a hydrologic and thermal regime. This study compares interannual patterns in the timing of coho mid-river migration in the North Umqua (180 km up river from the estuary) and the initiation of spawn timing in the Smith River basins (Oregon) with river discharge and water temperature data to ascertain whether these behaviors are driven by fluvial conditions. Additionally, we used this data to identify the window over which most migration and spawning takes place in our test systems. On the North Umpqua, coho salmon mid-river migration initiated (first 5% of migrants) after summer peak temperatures and following a threshold average daily temperature of 18° C, but before fall storm events occurred. In most years, approximately 75% of the migrating coho salmon have moved past the Winchester Dam before fall storms initiated and when discharge remained less than the 11 year average for the month of November, more similar to summer than winter flow levels. Additionally, characteristic lengths and numbers of peaks within the distribution of annual migrations were attributable to the generational cohort that the migration belonged to despite the similarity in population size across all years. These patterns in the distribution of generational cohorts suggest an inherited timing response as well as highlight cohorts which may contain diminished sub-populations. The initiation of coho salmon spawning appears limited both by a thermal threshold of 12° C in all basins, as well as by a minimal discharge threshold, which is unique to each stream. Continued spawning activity occurs as discharge remains elevated from fall levels. It is also notable that there was no statistical difference in the date of the initiation of spawning within each basin in a given year or across years at a given site. Together, these studies highlight the important role that the coho salmon genome plays in reproductive timing as well as the ways that fluvial thresholds limit reproductive behavior in time. Coho have survived because of their genome has been resilient when faced with environmental change. Future work should consider variability in fluvial conditions relative to coho salmon phenotypic plasticity over time. Coho salmon phenotypic plasticity will determine whether the rate of change of the hydrologic and thermal regimes important to coho salmon survival outpaces the coho's ability to adapt. This study contributed to this future work by establishing baseline relationships between the behavior of a threatened species and measurable environmental thresholds.
