Book excerpt: A 5-year Special Research Program (SRP) has been established at the Naval Research Laboratory that addresses the physical characterization and modeling of benthic boundary layer processes and the subsequent impact of these processes on the seafloor properties that affect mine countermeasure operations. This special project outlines the SRP scientific program and reviews the results of the four workshops convened to establish scientific priorities. Workshop participants agreed that sediment structure provides the common perspective: to quantitatively model relationships among sediment physical properties; to quantify the effects of environmental processes on sediment properties; and to model sediment behavior (acoustic, electrical, and mechanical). Hypotheses based on quantitative physical models that incorporate three-dimensional sediment structure will be tested by a series of field experiments at coastal locations where differing environmental processes dominate sediment structure. These experiments stress the role of sediment structure in determining high-frequency acoustic phenomena such as scattering, penetration, and propagation, as well as the physical relationships between remotely sensed acoustic properties and mechanical strength parameters. Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed to focus attention on unsolved problems, with carefully selected participants invited to provide complementary expertise from a variety of relevant disciplines. Through inten sive discussion in small groups they seek to reach a consensus on assessments and recommendations for future research emphasis, which it is hoped will be of value to the larger scientific community. The subjects treated over the past few years have been as varied as science itself-e.g., computer software engineering, chemical catalysis, and materials and energy research. The present effort evolved from informal discussions between marine geolo gists, chemists, and biologists which underlined the desirability of improved communication among those concerned with the benthic layer. In both scien tific and technological terms this is an exciting frontier, rich in promise but poorly understood at present. Book excerpt: The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) 6.1 Core Program 'Sediment Geochemical Processes' participated in field experiments in the Baltic Sea near Eckernfoerde Germany during May 1993 in conjunction with the NRL Coastal Benthic Boundary Layer Special Research Project. Samples from box cores BC244 ('APL-2/ Stanic-towers' site) and BC250 (Mittelgrund area) were analyzed for water content, average grain density, and grain size distribution. Porosity, void ratio, and wet bulk density were calculated from the water content and average grain density. The electrical resistivity of core BC250 was measured downcore, from which formation factors were calculated. These data are reported in this memorandum report. In addition, cores BC244 and BC250 were sampled for microfabric, clay-fraction mineralogy, inorganic and organic carbon contents, and total nitrogen content. These analyses are in progress. BC244, BC250, and BC265 (also from the 'APL-2/Stanic-towers' site) were analyzed for dissolved porewater concentrations of nutrients and key chemical species (pH, salinity, titration alkalinity, oxygen by microelectrode, ammonia, nitrate plus nitrite, Mn, Fe, Ca, phosphate, silicate, and sulfide) and total and microbial methane by GEOMAR, a research institute located in Kiel, Germany. The electrical resistivity of core BC265 was tested as well by GEOMAR. The GEOMAR results will be reported elsewhere.

Book excerpt: The structure of the near-bottom velocity and density fields was observed for 3 months with a fixed velocity/temperature measuring array on the Hatteras Abyssal Plain. The velocity signal was examined for structure coherent with the observed mixed layers. Velocity fluctuations above 1 cph increase in energy near the bottom, especially within bottom mixed layers. The frequency and energy of these fluctuations is consistent with the expected properties of boundary layer turbulence. The turbulence as measured by these velocity fluctuations, is modulated on tidal and inertial time scales and extends intermittently throughout the bottom mixed layer. The clockwise near inertial velocity fluctuations, presumably due to internal waves, also show structure coherent with the observed mixed layers. Their energy decreases near the top of the mixed layer with little phase change. Within the mixed layer the phase begins to lead, with the phase increasing downward. The near inertial anticlockwise velocity fluctuations show far less coherence with the mixed layer structure; higher frequency internal wave band velocity fluctuations show very little coherence with the mixed layer structure. The characteristic boundary layer velocity signal in both the high frequency and near inertial bands commonly extends throughout the mixed layer, often significantly above the estimated turbulent Ekman layer height. These observations are inconsistent with a steady turbulent Ekman layer model of the boundary layer. (Author).
