Book Synopsis Wind Energy Conversion 1992 by : British Wind Energy Association. Conference
Download or read book Wind Energy Conversion 1992 written by British Wind Energy Association. Conference and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having sited the conference where, even in July, they had a good chance of being able to test theories on a moment's notice, contributors from a wide range of disciplines consider not only the economic and engineering parameters of wind energy, but also the contentious issues of noise, visual impact, and aesthetics that have often accompanied the implementation or attempted implementation of wind farms in economically and politically marginalized regions of Britain. One of the three keynote addresses holds an olive branch to environmentalists. The other 45 papers cover overviews and perspectives, windfarm design and construction, power quality, wind turbine philosophies, autonomous systems, standards, design methods, technical tools, components, planning, visual and aesthetic considerations, noise issues, non-UK markets financing and economics, market and industrial opportunities in the UK, and integrating wind energy into the grid. Book Synopsis Advances in Solar Energy by : Karl W. Böer
Download or read book Advances in Solar Energy written by Karl W. Böer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Solar Energy, now in its fifth year, is continuing with topics of the main field of solar energy conversion. However, because of the increasing interest in a solar systems approach, we have decided to include the article of Bockris et al., on Hydrogen Technology, which offers interesting aspects of transport and storage of solar energy, as well as the potential for a versatile fuel. The other articles cover the field of photovoltaics, solar energy-related mate rials, wind conversion, solar retrofitting of existing buildings, and new architectural designs in harmony with climate and the comfort of all occupants. These articles give a critical assessment of the present state of the art, and provide a long list of literature for further in-depth studies. I greatly appreciate the assistance of the Editors and referees of the articles for their many constructive suggestions. My special thanks go to Ms. Martha Hobbs for her dedicated work in typesetting the manuscript in the University of Delaware's Publication Office, and to the University of Delaware for their continued support. The accommodating help from Plenum Press and its production staff deserves our grateful acknowledgement.
Book Synopsis Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry by : David J. Hess
Download or read book Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry written by David J. Hess and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry, David Hess examines how social movements and other forms of activism affect innovation in science, technology, and industry. Synthesizing and extending work in social studies of science and technology, social movements, and globalization, Hess explores the interaction of grassroots environmental action and mainstream industry and offers a conceptual framework for understanding it. Hess proposes a theory of scientific and technological change that considers the roles that both industry and grassroots consumers play in setting the research agenda in science and technology, and he identifies "alternative pathways" by which social movements can influence scientific and technological innovation. He analyzes four of these pathways: industrial opposition movements, organized against targeted technologies (as in the campaign against nuclear energy); technology- and product-oriented movements, which press for alternatives (as does the organic food movement); localism, which promotes local ownership (as in "buy-local" campaigns); and access pathways, which support a more equitable distribution of resources. Within each pathway, Hess examines reforms in five different areas: agriculture, energy, waste and manufacturing, infrastructure, and finance. The book's theoretical argument and empirical evidence demonstrate the complex pattern of incorporation (of grassroots innovations) and transformation (of alternative ownership structures and the alternative products themselves) that has characterized the relationship of industry and activism. Hess's analysis of alternative pathways to change suggests ways economic organizations could shift to a more just and sustainable course in the twenty-first century.
