Book excerpt: The recovery of coal bed methane can be enhanced by injecting carbon dioxide in the coal seam at supercritical conditions. Through an in situ adsorption/desorption process the displaced methane is produced and the adsorbed carbon dioxide is permanently stored. This process is called Enhanced Coal Bed Methane recovery (ECBM) and it is a technique under investigation as a possible approach to the geological storage of carbon dioxide in a carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) system. ECBM recovery is not yet a mature technology, in spite of the growing number of pilot and eld tests worldwide that have shown its potential and highlighted its diffculties. The problems encountered are largely due to the heterogeneous nature of coal and its complex interaction with gases. The aim of this thesis was to develop experimental and modeling tools that are able to provide a comprehensive characterization of coal required first to understand the mechanisms acting during the process of injection and storage and secondly to assess its potential for an ECBM operation.

Book excerpt: Coalbed methane reservoir (CBM) performance is controlled by a complex set of reservoir, geologic, completion and operational parameters and the inter-relationships between those parameters. Therefore in order to understand and analyze CBM prospects, it is necessary to understand the following; (1) the relative importance of each parameter, (2) how they change under different constraints, and (3) what they mean as input parameters to the simulator. CBM exhibits a number of obvious differences from conventional gas reservoirs, one of which is in its modeling. This thesis includes a sensitivity study that provides a fuller understanding of the parameters involved in coalbed methane production, how coalbed methane reservoirs are modeled and the effects of the various modeling parameters on its reservoir performance. A dual porosity coalbed methane simulator is used to model primary production from a single well coal seam, for a variety of coal properties for this work. Varying different coal properties such as desorption time ([tau] t), initial gas adsorbed (Vi), fracture and matrix permabilities ([kappa] f and [kappa] m), fracture and matrix porosity (Ø f and Ø m), initial fracture and matrix pressure (to enable modeling of saturated and undersaturated reservoirs), we have approximated different types of coals. As part of the work, I will also investigate the modeling parameters that affect the dual peaking behavior observed during production from coalbed methane reservoirs. Generalized correlations, for a 2-D dimensional single well model are developed. The predictive equations can be used to predict the magnitude and time of peak gas rate.

Book excerpt: One of the approaches suggested for sequestering CO2 is by injecting it in coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. Despite its potential importance for CO2 sequestration, to our knowledge, CO2 injection in CBM reservoirs for the purpose of sequestration has not been widely studied. Furthermore, a key element missing in most of the existing studies is the comprehensive characterization of the CBM reservoir structure. CBM reservoirs are complex porous media, since in addition to their primary pore structure, generated during coal formation, they also contain a variety of fractures, which may potentially play a key role in CO2 sequestration, as they generally provide high permeability flow paths for both CO2 and CH4. In this report we present an overview of our ongoing experimental and modeling efforts, which aim to investigate the injection, adsorption and sequestration of CO2 in CBM reservoirs, the enhanced CH4 production that results, as well as the main factors that affect the overall operation. We describe the various experimental techniques that we utilize, and discuss their range of application and the value of the data generated. We conclude with a brief overview of our modeling efforts aiming to close the knowledge gap and fill the need in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the concept of displacement of sorbed methane and enhancement of methane recovery by injection of CO2 into coal, while sequestering CO2 . The objective of this study was to investigate the diffusion behavior of San Juan Basin coal under single and competitive gas environments. The movement of gas in a coalbed reservoir starts in the coal matrix with diffusion towards the naturally occurring cleat network surrounding the matrix blocks. The gas production potential from coalbed reservoirs under different gas environments was, therefore, estimated by studying the diffusion behavior of the coal type. The results clearly showed that the rate of diffusion increases with decreasing reservoir pressure, the increase being exponential at low/very low pressure. As a final step, a simulation study was carried out using the experimental results to predict long-term gas production from coalbed reservoirs with and without CO2 injection. This was followed by a preliminary economic analysis in order to estimate the feasibility of enhanced recovery method by CO2 injection by calculating the net present value of a project with and without carbon credits. The results showed that it is possible to obtain significant improvement in methane recovery by CO2 injection. However, it becomes economically feasible only with carbon credits.

Book excerpt: Understanding, quantifying, and tracking atmospheric methane and emissions is essential for addressing concerns and informing decisions that affect the climate, economy, and human health and safety. Atmospheric methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) that contributes to global warming. While carbon dioxide is by far the dominant cause of the rise in global average temperatures, methane also plays a significant role because it absorbs more energy per unit mass than carbon dioxide does, giving it a disproportionately large effect on global radiative forcing. In addition to contributing to climate change, methane also affects human health as a precursor to ozone pollution in the lower atmosphere. Improving Characterization of Anthropogenic Methane Emissions in the United States summarizes the current state of understanding of methane emissions sources and the measurement approaches and evaluates opportunities for methodological and inventory development improvements. This report will inform future research agendas of various U.S. agencies, including NOAA, the EPA, the DOE, NASA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presented study concerns the unconventional coal bed methane (CBM) fields that imply peculiarity of their evaluation. The theoretical basis of the CBM field development is briefly described, most widely known models of changes in the properties of the coal seam are considered. The study objective was formulation of a computation framework based on material balance equation and incorporating non-equilibrium nature of gas desorption, matrix shrinkage and geomechanically dependent relative permeability curves. Further solution of a specific CBM single-well problem and parametric study for evaluation impact of separate parameters were conducted. Focus of the studies was on well production forecasting, effect of mechanical properties of coal on production efficiency, comparison of the analytical models performance based on specific mathematical models for absolute and relative permeabilities and residual saturations. Numerical simulation is not flexible and easy to understand, therefore other tools are needed in order to try out the newly proposed mathematical models of processes occurring during CBM production. For desorption controlled reservoirs, considering non-equilibrium nature of desorption has to be essential, otherwise the production can be significantly overestimated. The currently proposed models have significant drawbacks, since they have to be heavily adapted to give similar results, being based on experimental results with limited pressures. Chidsey and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2002 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the Ferron Sandstone project was to develop a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, quantitative characterization of a fluvial-deltaic reservoir to allow realistic inter-well and reservoir-scale models to be developed for improved oil-field development in similar reservoirs world-wide. Quantitative geological and petrophysical information on the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone in east-central Utah was collected. Both new and existing data were integrated into a three-dimensional model of spatial variations in porosity, storativity, and tensorial rock permeability at a scale appropriate for inter-well to regional-scale reservoir simulation. Simulation results could improve reservoir management through proper infill and extension drilling strategies, reduction of economic risks, increased recovery from existing oil fields, and more reliable reserve calculations. This 471-page report describes the geological and petrophysical characteristics of the fluvial-deltaic Upper Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone. The report includes Ferron facies analysis, regional sequence stratigraphy, evaluation of three case-study areas, geostatistics, and a 3-D oil and gas reservoir simulation of the Ferron.
