Book excerpt: Many of the all-time greatest male and female athletes and coaches from virtually every conceivable sport offer their inspirational words of wisdom in this collection of motivational quotes on what it takes to be a champion. What traits does Hall of Fame tennis star Chris Evert think it takes to be a champion? What does Tiger Woods think is his greatest asset? (It has nothing to do with driving, pitching, or putting.) The answers to these questions are found within If Winning Were Easy, Everyone Would Do It. Accomplished sports authors Charlie Jones and Kim Doren have combined hundreds of interviews and careful research to assemble 365 quotes from some of our most beloved sports heroes. "It's not where you start, but where you finish," says April Heinrichs, coach of the U.S. women's national soccer team. "Confidence is only born out of one thing: demonstrated ability," says Bill Parcells, former NFL head coach and Super Bowl champion. "It is not born of anything else. You cannot dream up confidence. You cannot fabricate it. You cannot wish it. You have to accomplish it." Whether you are a serious athlete, work out for fun, or simply watch sports on the weekends, this collection of quotes from world-class athletes and coaches will enlighten, motivate, and encourage you to accomplish more in your life.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller that has all America talking—with a new afterword on expanding your range—as seen on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, Morning Joe, CBS This Morning, and more. “The most important business—and parenting—book of the year.” —Forbes “Urgent and important. . . an essential read for bosses, parents, coaches, and anyone who cares about improving performance.” —Daniel H. Pink Shortlisted for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. If you dabble or delay, you’ll never catch up to the people who got a head start. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers, from professional athletes to Nobel laureates, shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see. Provocative, rigorous, and engrossing, Range makes a compelling case for actively cultivating inefficiency. Failing a test is the best way to learn. Frequent quitters end up with the most fulfilling careers. The most impactful inventors cross domains rather than deepening their knowledge in a single area. As experts silo themselves further while computers master more of the skills once reserved for highly focused humans, people who think broadly and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives will increasingly thrive.

This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most coaches I really like quotes. I think they can be a powerful motivational tool for players. I published A Season In Words in 2004. The book was my attempt to take you through your season and provide you with motivational quotes for situations as they arise. There are hundreds of thousands of quote books, and many are targeted to coaches. However, they were not organized as the season is organized. The original Season in Words became a big hit with coaches. In 2020, I "evolved" from coaching and began to focus more on my company which now includes our monthly Coaching and Leadership Journal. In a conversation with my coaching friend Stan Jones, Associate Head Coach for Florida State Basketball, he asked me what I've been up to since I retired from coaching. I told him a few of the things I was doing including organizing our annual Coaching and Leadership Summit. He said, "I thought you'd have a new Season In Words book out by now." That got me thinking. I went through the original book and even though many quotes are timeless, there were some like all things that had become outdated. I decided I would keep some of the old while including some new quotes I have added to my files since the eariler publication. I decided to keep the same format and chapters/files because the feedback I got about the layout was incredibly positive. I hope you can find some words from this new edition that will not only make you a better coach but also an even better person. --Dan Spainhour

There are more than 1600 opinions, insights, and wits of wisdom to help guide your team through the season. The book's purpose is to help prepare you for any situation that may arise. We all have seen numerous publications filled with motivational and inspiring quotes. This book identifies 168 outstanding coaches who have much to teach us about optimizing our performance, our character, and our lives. Coaches build winning teams and enable each athlete they mentor, guide, cajole, and nurture to achieve top performance. More than this, every great sports coach is first and last a life coach. Sportswriter Justin Spizman identifies and profiles 168 of the greatest coaches and managers of all time. They have much to teach us about optimizing our performance, our character, and our lives. Coach: The Greatest Teachers in Sports and Their Lessons for Us All profiles coaches in every significant sport, from football, basketball, baseball, and hockey to gymnastics, skating, rowing, rugby, soccer, and more. From field to court, diamond, rink, and pitch, the big leagues to the Olympics, college, and high school, Coach delivers the most teachable moments and methods—for play, for competition, and for life. Rich in quotations, each profile ends with lessons for top performance on and off the field, in and beyond the arena. Justin Spizman tracks all the relevant stats—for every sport keeps score—but he seeks first and last to disclose the mind, the heart, and the force of character that drive each of the indispensable men and women behind the world’s most envied and admired athletes. His profiles range from the likes of Cardinals manager Tony La Russa (already an MLB legend), to Aimee Boorman and Cecile Canqueteau-Landi (who both coached gymnastics phenom Simone Biles), Bill Belichick (the take-no-prisoners field general of the New England Patriots), Pat Summitt (who racked up 1,098 wins as coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974 to 2012), Marián Vajda (the coach behind tennis titan Novak Djokovic), and David Leadbetter (golf guru to champions Kathy Baker, Nick Faldo, and Michelle Wie).
