Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: RF excited CO2 lasers are widely used in industry. They provide relatively high power discharge levels while maintaining compactness, simplicity, and durability with respect to other competing laser technologies. To attain high power levels in the range of 5-10 KW, lasers with large electrode areas have to be designed. Unfortunately, due to the large electrode length requirements, transmission line effects make the discharge loading nonlinear, adversely affecting the efficiency of the CO2 laser. A standard approach to linearize the discharge loading is to introduce shunt inductors across the length of the electrodes in an effort to counter the capacitive nature of the discharge behavior. This thesis investigates and improves the theoretical models found in the literature in an effort to predict the discharge non-uniformity and allow for multiple shunt inductors installation. Specifically, we discuss the coupling of a CO2 laser discharge model with an electrical circuit solving scheme and how it can be characterized as one dimensional (1-D) and two dimensional (2-D) systems. The 1-D system is modeled using transmission line (TL) theory, where as the 2-D system is modeled using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) scheme. All our models were implemented in standard MATLAB code and the results are compared with those found in the literature with the goal to analyze and ascertain model limitations.

Book excerpt: Offering a fresh take on laser engineering, Laser Modeling: A Numerical Approach with Algebra and Calculus presents algebraic models and traditional calculus-based methods in tandem to make concepts easier to digest and apply in the real world. Each technique is introduced alongside a practical, solved example based on a commercial laser. Assuming some knowledge of the nature of light, emission of radiation, and basic atomic physics, the text: Explains how to formulate an accurate gain threshold equation as well as determine small-signal gain Discusses gain saturation and introduces a novel pass-by-pass model for rapid implementation of "what if?" scenarios Outlines the calculus-based Rigrod approach in a simplified manner to aid in comprehension Considers thermal effects on solid-state lasers and other lasers with new and efficient quasi-three-level materials Demonstrates how the convolution method is used to predict the effect of temperature drift on a DPSS system Describes the technique and technology of Q-switching and provides a simple model for predicting output power Addresses non-linear optics and supplies a simple model for calculating optimal crystal length Examines common laser systems, answering basic design questions and summarizing parameters Includes downloadable Microsoft® ExcelTM spreadsheets, allowing models to be customized for specific lasers Don’t let the mathematical rigor of solutions get in the way of understanding the concepts. Laser Modeling: A Numerical Approach with Algebra and Calculus covers laser theory in an accessible way that can be applied immediately, and numerically, to real laser systems.

Book excerpt: A carbon dioxide laser amplifier simulation model is developed for use on IBM-compatible personal computers. First, a general laser amplifier is modeled by dividing an amplifier into separate cells to model both the temporal and spatial dependence of the amplifier's gain. The resulting amplification is validated by comparison with a closed-form solution. Second, losses due to amplified spontaneous emissions (ASE) are investigated and included in the model. Equations for ASE losses consider both the solid angle of the emissions and the reflectivity of the cavity windows. Other reflections are ignored. Third, an existing numerical model of CO2 gas kinetics is incorporated. In this kinetics model, temperature-dependent terms are fixed according to initial conditions, and the rotational levels of the upper CO2 vibrational state are assumed to be in equilibrium. The user-friendly model allows designers and students to investigate the amplification of either square input pulses or pulses generated with a laser oscillator while varying several input parameters. Among the variable parameters are length, diameter, gas mix, temperature, pressure, window reflectivity, and pump efficiency. Theses. (aw).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematics of Thermal Modeling, Second Edition, provides an introduction to the basics of the mathematics and physics needed to understand and use the physical principles employed in constructing models of a number of aspects of thermal modeling in industrial processes, notably laser welding; most of the techniques are applicable to many other technological processes, however. The book demonstrates how insight can be gained from mathematical enquiry at a simple level and helps workers understand the way in which more sophisticated models can be constructed. Some necessary but less familiar mathematical techniques are explained in greater detail than before and some discussion of wave-like features in welds is now included. An understanding will be gained of the importance of studying the interaction of multiple features. The book is equally suitable for engineers and material scientists at the Master's or first-year PhD level at university, to similar students with a background in mathematics or physics who are new to laser or industrial technology, or for research workers coming to mathematical modeling of industrial thermal processes for the first time, whatever stage they have reached in their career development.

Book excerpt: The CO2-laser technology may be considered the most advanced in the laser field. Research has been stimulated strongly because of its high potential for many scientific and industrial applications. This book is primarily devoted to the main, more established developments of the CO2-laser. Advances in continuous systems, pulsed systems, mode-locked pulses, and the amplification of short pulses are dealt with in detail. This is done by giving an extensive treatment of relevant molecular physics, gas kinetics, excitation and relaxation processes, and laser physics pertinent to CO2. It also provides a thorough theoretical background of specific technologies used in various devices. Many numerical values of physical constants and accurate spectroscopic data of CO2 isotopes are included.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to develop models of pulsed and continuous wave (CW) CO2 lasers on a personal computer, and to explore optimization of the computed output power using response surface methodology (RSM). The first program is based on a four-level point model of pulsed Co2 laser that predicts the temperature rise and the effects of temperature on the power, energy, and gain of the pulsed laser. The second program, derived from the first, is based on a four-level point model of a continuous wave CO2 laser and calculates the power, gain, small-signal gain, and saturation flux of the CW laser. Both models were verified and extensively validated against published data with good results. Finally, this study explored the optimization of the CW laser model using RSM and found an operating point for maximum power at 10 torr and 4% CO2. Several recommendations are included for upgrading the CO2 laser models and continuing the optimization.
