The findings were generated from qualitative interviews with 13 family firms of which nine are currently and four cases were once co-led by siblings. The research revealed that successfully and sustainably co-leading a family business as siblings can be considered as the king’s class of leadership as it includes managing the family layer with at least as much attention as the business layer itself. Besides diversifying in qualifications, competences, personalities and distribution tasks accordingly, processes such as the active and conscious decision-making for the business and at the same time for the co-leadership with other siblings are increasingly important to form a successful sibling team.

It provides a timely and thorough investigation of the variant strategies and behaviors undertaken by family firms today, taking a closer look at different configurations of family involvement and how they influence outcomes and success. While studies on differences between family and non-family firms are deeply rooted in the literature, this handbook uniquely examines the family firm heterogeneity research to date and the inner firm governance, financial and non-financial objectives, and strategies such as innovation, competitive dynamics, internationalization, and human resources management. The handbook pulls together the work of the most prominent names in family business from around the world, separating itself from the competition both in content and geographical scope. Future research directions provided in each chapter will spark further interdisciplinary scholarly work, and will be enlightening for researchers, educators, and practitioners who are currently limited to the narrow and exclusive literature and advance the burgeoning research on this important topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s time to contemplate the accountability that comes from your greatest responsibility: Influence. Not all leaders have fancy titles or high-paying jobs. Every human has the power to influence, and, therefore, is primed to be a leader. By coming to terms with our ability to affect others with our energies, words, and actions, we begin to grow in claiming this responsibility instead of remaining blind. Smith and Griffin continue the “I” in Team series journey by helping all humans (all leaders) consider how they will build themselves and others with the power of influence. Through real-life stories and summarized key takeaways, the authors promote out-of-the-box learning. Responsible leaders will encounter topics such as: Evaluating the gaps in the present state of leadership, and pivoting toward servant leadership Setting the example and being the influence you wish to see grow on your teams Developing appropriate policies and procedures to ensure a solid organizational foundation Remaining open-minded to create a safe space for diversity to thrive Adapting big-picture ideas into smaller, tactical actions The authors transform the understanding that each individual has about themselves and allows them to focus on building positive teams around them. Responsible Influence calls into question what it means to be a leader and helps identify the future state of leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on insights from executives across the globe, this planning guide captures the unique challenges faced by leaders of a family business and presents an approach to help these operations survive and thrive across generations. Leading a company is a much different experience for those in a family-run business than for their contemporaries in nonfamilial environments. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the skill set and mindset required to lead family enterprises, and it introduces the four critical areas in which family businesses differ from traditional companies—management structures, governance mechanisms, entrepreneurial advantages, and stewardship practices. In a fascinating convergence of entrepreneurship, family relations, and corporate principles, the authors present two frameworks to better understand the best practices of leading a family business: a firm-level frame focused on these four critical areas of difference (architecture, governance, entrepreneurship, and stewardship) and an individual one that mirrors these in terms of the skill set and mindset successful leaders need to develop. Craig and Moores consider the differences between leadership in family enterprises and non-family enterprises; the entrepreneurial capabilities needed by executives in family-based firms; and the use of power, identification, and motivation in managing their responsibilities both at home and in the workplace. Case studies provide a real-life look at the inner workings of family operations across the globe.
